SUMMARY:Old Academy Players presents Disenchanted!
DESCRIPTION:Disenchanted! By Dennis T. Giacino\nDirected by Annie Hnatko \nApril 25th\, 26th; May 2nd\, 3rd\, 4th\, 9th\, 10th\, 11th\, 2025\nFriday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.\, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. \nPoison apples and lost slippers are just the beginning. The original storybook heroines are none-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture\, so they’ve tossed their tiaras and have come to life to set the record straight. Forget the princesses you think you know — these royal renegades are here to comically belt out the truth. Received an “Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Outer Critics Circle Awards) and a “Best New Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Off-Broadway Alliance). \nContent Warning: Contains adult language and content.

SUMMARY:Daniel Maseda: "BE GOOD!" WITH PAULETTE
DESCRIPTION:The mildest man imaginable returns to Philadelphia for a bonkers\, absurd\, Fringie Award-winning evening of manners. \nPaulette stumbles into a room full of the most strangers he’s ever seen\, and he doesn’t know whether to panic or mingle—so he does both. Sporting a brown sweater and a hot-off-the-fist black eye\, he dares to address the room armed with nothing but an arsenal of pleasantries and a monumental fear of rejection. \nHot off of a high-octane run at this year’s Philly Fringe\, certified clown Daniel Maseda brings well-mannered idiot Paulette back to Philadelphia with this fan-favorite show that never plays out the same way twice. A good night for anyone who wants to scream at a polite person. \nWINNER OF THE FRINGIE AWARD (CLOWN)\, Philly Fringe 2025 \n“Utterly ridiculous…brilliantly performed…laugh-out-loud delirium.” (DC Theater Arts) \n“For this hour\, just say yes to the madness.” (The Comic’s Comic) \n  \n7:40pm doors | 8pm show \n$12 advance/$15 day of\, notaflof

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Tolkien’s Fight Against Futurism
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Tolkien’s Fight Against Futurism\,” a look at a beloved fantasy author as fundamentally engaged in a battle to preserve beauty\, with Graham McAleer\, professor of philosophy at Loyola University Maryland and teacher of a course on the morals and politics of Lord of the Rings. \nAs a young man in the early 20th century J.R.R. Tolkien watched an avant-garde art form known as Futurism become all the rage. Shaped by industrialization and by admiration for new machinery\, Futurism celebrated speed\, acceleration\, and the whirl of technical innovation\, earning it another name\, Vorticism\, in Tolkien’s England. \nAlthough remembered mainly as a writer\, Tolkien also was an accomplished pen-and-ink artist who kept abreast of the art movements of his time. He developed a distaste for Futurism and what it signified that only grew stronger as he experienced the horrors of modern warfare as a soldier at the 1916 Battle of the Somme. He regarded what Futurism celebrated as “the Machine\,” representing fascist politics and apocalyptic war\, and his opposition to it deeply influenced not just his art but his written works. \nGain insights into how Tolkien’s sensibilities as a visual artist shaped his worldview and writing with Graham McAleer\, a scholar of philosophy who has closely studied Tolkien’s work. \nProfessor McAleer will look at how Tolkien’s lore can be seen as one long meditation on beauty and its problematic twin\, vanity\, with what separated them most in Tolkien’s mind being their respective approaches to time: Beauty is patient\, vanity is not. \nWe’ll look at Tolkien’s argument that that impatience mars beauty and corrupts our standing in a cosmos\, and we’ll consider his characterization of his own work as “cosmogonical drama” dealing with the universe’s origins. You’ll learn how his tales of Dark Lords squaring off against elven queens and genial Hobbits reflect his view that war is always a dispute about beauty. \nYou’ll come to see Tolkien as having grappled with a profound philosophical question that dates back to Plato\, and you’ll emerge from the talk with a much deeper understanding and appreciation of Tolkien’s works. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: A bust of Tolkien at Oxford.
