SUMMARY:Basics of Drawing: Figure Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to “Figure It Out: Basics of Figure Drawing\,” your four-session workshop into the wonderful world of visual art! Whether you can barely draw a stick figure or you’re already doodling masterpieces\, this class is designed to empower you to capture the human form with flair and confidence. \nIn the first session\, we’ll break the ice with some basic anatomy and proportions—think of it as a crash course in seeing the human body like never before. We’ll explore simple shapes and lines to get the ball rolling. By the end\, you’ll be sketching figures that look like people. \nSessions 2 – 4 will combine learning techniques\, such as movement\, gesture\, shading\, and texture\, with a figure model. So grab your sketchbook and let’s get drawing—because every masterpiece starts with a single line! \n*Students must bring a Newsprint sketchbook (11×14). All other supplies will be provided

SUMMARY:"Middle Spoon" Book Launch with Author Alejandro Varela
DESCRIPTION:Join us at H&H Books on Tuesday\, Oct. 14 as we welcome authors Alejandro Varela and Joseph Earl Thomas to celebrate Alejandro’s new novel\, MIDDLE SPOON. An audience Q&A and book signing will follow their reading and discussion. \nRead on for more details! \nAbout the Book: \n“Dear Ben\, \nI wouldn’t have thought it possible for me at this age and at this otherwise fruitful moment in my life to plumb a new low.” \nSo begins MIDDLE SPOON\, a one-sided epistolary novel in which our narrator (happily married\, adorable kids\, comfortable life in Brooklyn\, etc.) has just been unceremoniously\, abruptly dumped by his young\, hot boyfriend. He spirals into first-time heartbreak and must confront a world still struggling to understand polyamorous relationships. MIDDLE SPOON skewers the unspoken rules we still live by–from taboos around intimacy to the shortcomings of Oscar season\, pop culture\, and gluten-free food–offering a surprising perspective on love\, loss\, and reinvention. Heart-wrenching and uproariously funny\, this is a book for anyone who has longed\, nursed a broken heart\, or grappled with love at its messiest. \n“A sly\, analytical opera of the heart.” – Andrew Sean Greer\, LESS \n“A gripping work of domestic fiction that freaks the emotional constraints of the genre.” – Maya Binyam\, HANGMAN \n“Fiercely funny\, intelligent\, unhinged\, and humane\, [MIDDLE SPOON] stares right into the abyss with you\, pointing out all there is still left to love.”- Mira Jacob\, GOOD TALK \nReady to read? MIDDLE SPOON will be available in-store at H&H Books beginning Sept. 9. You can also preorder a copy on our ecommerce site. \nJoseph’s books\, SINK: A MEMOIR and GOD BLESS YOU\, OTIS SPUNKMEYER (both of which are H&H staff faves) are available now in-store and online. And you can read more about both authors’ work on H&H’s website. \nRegistration is highly recommended! Tickets are free\, but an attendance count helps us organize our space and plan even more events for our community. \nEmail events@theheadandthehand.com with any questions and follow us @theheadandthehand on Instagram.

SUMMARY:Sing Democracy 250: Opening Concert in Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Sing Democracy 250 is a nationwide musical initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence: A movement of resilience\, a chorus of hope\, and a celebration of the values that define us as Americans. Through two newly commissioned choral works\, the project offers a musical lens on American democratic ideals\, encouraging thoughtful collective engagement with the nation’s founding principles. Launching in October 2025 in Philadelphia\, often seen as the cradle of American democracy\, Sing Democracy 250 will unfold through four signature choral concerts across cities important to the founding of America—Philadelphia and Washington\, D.C. for their foundational roles in democratic history; New York City\, today’s modern cultural capital; and Minnesota\, widely regarded as the choral center of the United States. Each concert will be rooted in local partnerships with community voices\, and include a celebration of the beginnings of our nation through meaningful texts and musical compositions. \nTime TBA

SUMMARY:Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Eschenbach Leads Bruckner 3
DESCRIPTION:Curtis Symphony Orchestra launches its 2025–26 series with a dynamic program tracing the evolution of orchestral music. The evening opens with Overture to The School for Scandal\, Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber’s witty and fast-paced overture inspired by Sheridan’s 18th-century comedy. Grammy-winning conductor Christoph Eschenbach leads Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto Grosso for Three Cellos\, featuring Curtis alumni Nicholas Canellakis\, Yumi Kendall\, and Christine Jeonghyoun Lee—a striking work that blends lyrical beauty with bold dissonance and rhythmic intensity. \nThe program culminates in Anton Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 3\, a sweeping and heroic masterpiece that unfolds in waves of majestic brass chorales\, soaring themes\, and a staggering sense of scale. \nPlease note programs and artists are subject to change.
