SUMMARY:Public Archaeology at Newlin Grist Mill
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nExcavations this season are planned for the Trimble farm complex in the Historic Area. The Trimble family built their house on the property adjoining the Mill in 1739 and\, over time\, built a whole complex of structures to support the operations of their household and farm. By conducting archaeological studies in the area around the Trimble House\, the Newlin Grist Mill staff hopes to learn more about the people who lived and worked there in the 18th\, 19th\, and early 20th centuries. \nScheduled 2025 Public Archaeology Days:\nMarch 15\nApril 19\nMay 17\nJune 21\nJuly 19\nOctober 18 – International Archaeology Day \n10am-3pm. Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend.

SUMMARY:Kitchen Encounters
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we demonstrate and explore historic cooking and foodways! We’ll be using the recently restored 1739 Trimble House Kitchen\, as well as the reconstructed Bake Oven behind the Miller’s House\, to experiment with a variety of ingredients\, techniques\, and “receipts” (recipes). \nEach program will have a different theme – this season\, we’re exploring topics related to the ongoing archaeological excavations around the Trimble House complex in coordination with our Public Archaeology program! \n2025 Kitchen Encounters: \n– April 19 – Butter & Cheese – inspired by the excavation of a dairy addition on the Trimble barn site\n– May 17 – Cornmeal – inspired by the Trimble corn crib ruins\n– June 28 – Ices\, Creams\, & Jellies – inspired by the Trimble icehouse ruins\n– September 6 – Tea Time – inspired by tea service artifacts that have been excavated onsite\n– October 18 – Beer Brewing – inspired by the extant Trimble brewhouse & the Trimble malthouse ruins\n– November 15 – Sausage Making – inspired by the later use of the Trimble brewhouse as a smokehouse for an abattoir that operated out of the original Trimble House kitchen

SUMMARY:Crawl Space\, Olivia Faith Harwood
DESCRIPTION:Fuller Rosen Gallery is proud to present Crawl Space\, a new solo exhibition by Olivia Faith Harwood. At the heart of Crawl Space is an ode to the monstrous feminine—a raw and unapologetic dive into the expectations\, fears\, and generational experiences that shape Harwood’s studio practice and selfhood. Her compositional blend of memory based imagery with radiant objects imbues her haunting self-portraits with an eternal depth of mystery and ecstasy. \nJoin us for an opening reception of Crawl Space at Fuller Rosen Gallery on First Friday\, April 04 from 6-9 pm.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: An Evening with Japan’s Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “An Evening with Japan’s Monsters\,” a look at the history and evolution of strange creatures from the Land of the Rising Sun\, with Frank L. Chance\, scholar of East Asian Art\, adjunct associate professor in the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for East Asian Studies\, and teacher of a course titled “Monsters of Japan.” \nJapan has a long\, rich history of stories about strange creatures\, ranging from giant beasts to tiny beings that can be collected and kept as pets. \nGain a rich understanding of the cultural origins of monsters such as Godzilla and the Pokémon with Frank Chance\, a scholar who has devoted his life to studying and teaching others about the cultures of Japan\, China\, and Korea. \nIn a talk ranging from legends that date back nearly 2\,000 years to today’s television shows\, movies\, and video games\, Dr. Chance will explore the stories and meanings of various monsters that arose in Japan. \nYou’ll learn how the ancient legends of such giants as the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi contained hidden political messages\, and how medieval Japan’s ghosts and demons were intended to scare believers into good Buddhist behavior. We’ll chart the proliferation in early modern times of stories of strange creatures such as humorous yōkai meant to entertain more than frighten. \nLeaping ahead to the second half of the twentieth century\, we’ll spend time with film giants such as Godzilla\, Mothra and Rodan and gain an understanding of how they\, too\, reverberated with political overtones. You’ll learn how the master of Japanese Animation\, Miyazaki Hayao\, deployed monstrous creatures to convey truths about the environment and its degradation. \nFrom our current century we’ll explore the phenomenon of Pokémon—collectible monsters that can be bought at toy shops and acquired through video games—and we’ll look at how they come with both complex narratives and hidden lessons about commerce and capitalism. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A print of an Umibōzu\, or monstrous sea spirt\, from about 1700 (Brigham Young University / Wikimedia).
