SUMMARY:"Oxford Soju Club" Book Launch with Author Jinwoo Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 3rd for the launch of Jinwoo Park’s debut novel OXFORD SOJU CLUB— a literary thriller that examines the masks immigrants wear in their adoptive countries for the sake of survival. Jinwoo will read from the novel and discuss the book with poet Kristen Brida before an audience Q&A and signing. \nOXFORD SOJU CLUB will be available for purchase in-store at H&H Books and on ecommerce. Get your copy ahead of time or at the event! \nThis event is free\, but registration is highly encouraged. Email events@theheadandthehand.com with any questions. \n  \nAbout the Book: \nThe natural enemy of a Korean is another Korean. \nWhen North Korean spymaster Doha Kim is mysteriously killed in Oxford\, his protégé\, Yohan Kim\, chases the only breadcrumb given to him in Doha’s last breath: “Soju Club\, Dr. Ryu.” In the meantime\, a Korean American CIA agent\, Yunah Choi\, races to salvage her investigation of the North Korean spy cell in the aftermath of the assassination. At the centre of it all is the Soju Club\, the only Korean restaurant in Oxford\, owned by Jihoon Lim\, an immigrant from Seoul in search of a new life after suffering a tragedy. As different factions move in with their own agendas\, their fates become entangled\, resulting in a bitter struggle that will determine whose truth will triumph. \nOXFORD SOJU CLUB weaves a tale of how immigrants in the Korean diaspora are forced to create identities to survive\, and how in the end\, they must shed those masks and seek their true selves. \nAbout the Authors: \nJinwoo Park is a Korean Canadian writer and literary translator based in Montreal. Born in Seoul\, he has lived in various parts of North America and the UK since the age of 11. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from McGill in 2013\, followed by a master’s in political economics from LSE in 2014\, and a master’s in creative writing at the University of Oxford in 2015. In 2021 he won the Jim Wong-Chu Emerging Writers’ Award for his first fiction manuscript\, Oxford Soju Club\, which will be published by Dundurn Press in September 2025. IG: @jinwoopark0721 TikTok: @jinwoopark0721 \nKristen Brida has made books her whole life ever since she grabbed Shel Silverstein’s Falling up at a Scholastic Bookfair in kindergarten and fell in love with reading and poetry. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from George Mason University\, where she taught introductory writing and literature courses. You can find some of her work at DIALOGIST\, Fairy Tale Review\, and New Delta Review. She currently is a columnist at The PoetryLab and runs a Bookstagram and BookTok dedicated to showing poetry is for everyone and uncovering hidden literary gems. IG: booksby_kb TikTok: @booksby_kb

SUMMARY:Calliope Reception & Artist Talks
DESCRIPTION:Gravers Lane Gallery proudly presents “Calliope”\, a joint jewelry exhibition between Lisa and Scott Cylinder at Gravers Lane Gallery. Join us for the first opening reception on September 5\, 2025\, from 5–8 PM\, with an artist talk at 6:30 PM. A second reception will be held on October 4\, 2025 from 5–8 PM. Come meet the artists and celebrate the magic\, meaning\, and meticulous craft of contemporary jewelry. \nLisa and Scott Cylinder are nationally acclaimed studio jewelers and educators whose narrative-driven\, mixed-media work has captivated audiences since 1998. Known for their masterful use of found objects and unconventional materials\, the Cylinders blend storytelling\, wit\, and technical prowess in every piece. As co-founders of Chickenscratch Jewelry\, they’ve exhibited internationally and taught at esteemed institutions such as Tyler School of Art and the National College of Art & Design in Dublin. \nCalliope symbolizes their convergence of concepts and imagery taken from Greek Mythology\, the Circus\, and Carousels. Emphasizing fantastical creatures composed of brass wind instruments combined with their fabrications\, the works are irreverent\, metaphorical\, and playful\, evoking notions of youthful wonder and discovery. This fantastical collection will feature one-of-a-kind brooches\, necklaces\, and sculptural objects —each piece invites viewers into a world of invention\, where craftsmanship becomes performance. \nThe Cylinders’ work resides in major museum collections\, including the Museum of Arts and Design (NYC)\, Racine Art Museum\, Gregg Museum of Art & Design\, and the CERF+ “Bird in Hand” Miniature Collection. They’ve been featured in significant exhibitions such as Adore/Adorn (LSU Museum of Art)\, Triptych: Life\, Love\, Death (Galerie La Joaillerie par Mazlo\, Paris)\, Blinding the Cyclops (Velvet da Vinci\, San Francisco)\, and SOFA fairs in New York and Chicago. Their work has appeared in numerous publications\, including Narrative Jewelry: Tales from the Toolbox\, Mastering Contemporary Jewelry Design\, theArt Jewelry Today and 500 series (Schiffer/Lark Books)\, Metalsmith\, and American Craft magazines. \nLisa and Scott met in 1984 as Jewelry & Metals students at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia\, bonding over music\, cigarettes\, and a mutual passion for making. Following years of education\, industry experience\, and graduate studies at SUNY New Paltz\, they married and founded their jewelry business in 1988. After a decade focused on production\, they shifted their energies toward one-of-a-kind art jewelry—while raising two children and renovating homes in their native Pennsylvania. \nTheir creative partnership is rooted in collaboration\, mutual respect\, and a shared aesthetic curiosity. Despite distinct approaches and personalities\, their work reflects a seamless blend of two voices into one. In 2018\, the Cylinders relocated to Maine to pursue a deeper connection to nature and a more balanced life. When not in their studio\, affectionately called “The Wedge\,” they can be found hiking\, gardening\, swimming\, cycling\, foraging mushrooms\, and exploring the natural beauty of their surroundings. \nGravers Lane Gallery is honored to host Calliope—a celebration of artistic ingenuity\, storytelling\, and the enduring wonder of wearable art.

DESCRIPTION:Internationally-touring storyteller Noam Osband brings his new show\, “Circumscribed: A True Tall Tale of One Father\, Two Sons\, and Thousands of Foreskins\,” to Philly Fringe for its Philadelphia debut at Studio 34. \nWinner of the Audience Choice Award at the NYC Fringe\, it’s a show about growing up with a father who was a mohel (Jewish ritual circumciser) who buried foreskins at home\, failed efforts at finding paternal figures after his untimely death\, and wrestling with circumcising his own kid. SUMMARY:My Body Your Eyes - Philly Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:My Body Your Eyes \nRuns September 28\, 2025 at Old First Reformed Church\, 151 N 4th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106 \n  \nPHILADELPHIA\, PA: Western New York mulit-choreographer performance Your Eyes My Body comes to the historic Old First Reformed Church for one performance on Sunday\, September 28\, 2025 at 5:30 PM as part of the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Featuring Nancy Hughes\, M Neild\, Laura D’Amico\, and MahataMmoho Collective\, the work invites audiences into a shared exploration of resistance\, reverence and ritual. Doors open at 5:00 PM. \n“I have both a chip on my shoulder about Western New York and a deep passion for the work made here. Our dance community can be a mix of interludes and stories of betrayals\, but it’s also spacious and gives dance room to incubate in the inner world\, like snow covering in Buffalo\, NY. I’m excited for these choreographers to connect with a wider performance art community and expand our conversation.” – Nancy Hughes \nMY BODY YOUR EYES is a trove of duets and solos. “If she is the storm\, is she also the shelter” is a duet choreographed and performed by Nancy Hughes in collaboration with M Neild\, inspired by intimate hierarchical relationships. The solo “It’s only human / nature” is by M Neild. It explores the duality of humanity’s relationship with nature-both the reverent awe we hold for its beauty and power\, and the devastation we inflict upon it. Laura D’Amico has a new solo\, performed nude inside a transparent five-sided box\, drawn from her Fulbright research in Italy. A Community-rooted ritual by MahataMmoho Collective explores unity and collaboration performed by Arjumand Ali and his dance partner. \n  \nTickets to My Body Your Eyes are currently on sale by visiting fringearts.com. Admission is $15 with a sliding scale beginning at $5. More information on Center Mouvement can be found at www.centermouvement.com\, and via Facebook at www.facebook.com/centerdancebuffalo. SUMMARY:The Old Academy Players Presents Crimes of the Heart\, a Black Comedy by Beth Henley
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — As part of its 2025-2026 Season\, The Old Academy Players is proud to present Crimes of the Heart\, written by Beth Henley\, American playwright\, screenwriter\, and actress.  The Old Academy Players’ 548th production will run September 12-28\, 2025; with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and three Sunday matinées\, September 14th\, 21st and 28th at 2:00 pm. It is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc. \nHenley completed Crimes of the Heart in 1978 and submitted it to several regional theatres without success. Unbeknownst to her\, a friend entered it in the Great American Play Contest at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The play was first performed in February 1979 at the Actors Theatre Louisville and it was named co-winner of the contest. The play continued to be developed\, with productions in Los Gatos\, St. Louis\, and Baltimore at the Centre Stage Theatre. \nThe Manhattan Theatre Club produced the play Off-Broadway at Stage 73\, from December 9\, 1980\, to January 11\, 1981\, for 35 sold-out performances. The play opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on November 4\, 1981\, and closed on February 13\, 1983\, after 535 performances and 13 previews. \nCrimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, the 1981 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play\, and a nomination for a Tony Award. Henley’s screenplay for Crimes of the Heart was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. \nReviews indicated: \n“While this play overflows with infectious high spirits\, it is also\, unmistakably\, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley’s prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake.” —The New York Times. \n“It has heart\, wit and a surprisingly zany passion that must carry all before it…it would certainly be a crime for anyone interested in the theatre not to see this play.” —New York Post \n“From time to time a play comes along that restores one’s faith in our theatre…” —New York Magazine. \nSynopsis: The tragicomedy relates the story of the three Magrath sisters\, Meg\, Babe\, and Lenny\, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst\, Mississippi\, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe’s latest incident. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the “crimes of the heart” she has committed.  Warning: Contains adult themes and adult language\, it is not suitable for young children.
