SUMMARY:Yellow Fever 1793: Evening Tour
DESCRIPTION:Step back and confront the chilling reality of Philadelphia’s most devastating epidemic on our Yellow Fever Tour at Christ Church Burial Ground. In the summer of 1793\, a terrifying fever swept through the city\, then the nation’s capital\, killing thousands and sending panic through the streets. \nThis guided tour will lead you through the very grounds where many of the victims—and heroes—of the outbreak were laid to rest. As you walk among the headstones\, you’ll learn about the medical theories of the time\, the societal breakdown caused by the disease\, and the remarkable resilience of a city under siege. This tour offers a unique and somber look into a pivotal moment in Philadelphia’s history\, exploring themes of public health\, heroism\, and the enduring human spirit in the face of tragedy.

SUMMARY:Let's Make An Album!
DESCRIPTION:LET’S MAKE AN ALBUM! is a new immersive performance series by Philadelphia pop-punk outfit Happier Than Ever\, attempting to break down the wall between artist and audience. Join the punk trio as they lead an evening of songwriting essentials\, guiding the audience through the process of crafting a song from initial idea to the first draft. Featuring vocalist and guitarist Jaden Alvaro Gines\, bassist Charlotte Horansky\, and drummer Connor Gotham\, the band will guide the audience through traditional songwriting structure\, lyrical storytelling\, and investigate the choices that are made behind each step of the songwriting process. Through audience suggestions and collaboration\, the band will create a full length song from start to finish LIVE on stage each night\, with the audience credited as songwriters! By the end of the performance series\, the hope is to create a small album’s worth of music to be released following the completion of performances\, with the audience members being given writing credits. The goal is to erase the line between the artist and the musician\, and begin the audience’s participation in the work from the very beginning. Part performance\, part workshop\, part improv show- get your notebooks and pencils ready\, because it’s time to make an album!

SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner—A Flood of Pictures—Photography Deepens the Waters
DESCRIPTION:At this Weeknights at the Wagner talk\, Dr. Michael Leja will take us back to the formative period of this cultural transformation in the U.S.—three decades before the Civil War—when pictures began to permeate everyday life. This flood of images included illustrations in books\, pamphlets\, and newspapers; photographs on cards; prints of various kinds; posters and broadsheets; and large scale paintings for theatrical displays. In a short span of time pictures assumed important functions by supplementing\, and in some cases overshadowing\, verbal texts in conveying news and information.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Kafka and Prague
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Kafka and Prague\,” on how a great author and his works were shaped by the history\, culture\, and landscape of a city\, with Cynthia Paces\, professor of history at The College of New Jersey\, teacher of courses on European history and Holocaust studies\, and author of two books on Prague. \nWhere we’re from can profoundly shape how we think\, what we create\, and what we end up doing with our lives. Gain a much deeper understanding of Franz Kafka\, the acclaimed and influential author whose prophetic work anticipated European totalitarianism and still shapes dystopian visions\, through a talk examining Kafka’s relationship with the city of Prague and those who lived there. \nYour guide on this scholarly journey\, Professor Cynthia Paces\, has lived and worked in Prague and is the author of Prague: The Heart of Europe and Prague Panoramas: National Memory and Sacred Space in the Twentieth Century. She has extensively researched how Kafka\, a German-Jewish writer\, came to symbolize the capital of the Czech Republic. \nWe’ll start by looking at how Kafka’s worldview was influenced by his childhood in Prague’s Old Town during a time when the city was rapidly expanding and industrializing and shifting from being a primarily German-speaking place to being the center of Czech nationalism and culture. Born in 1883 only steps away from the city’s former Jewish Ghetto\, as a boy Kafka watched the destruction of the Jewish Quarter during an urban sanitation project. The event profoundly affected him\, prompting him to later remark: “We walk through the broad streets of the newly built town” but “inside we tremble just as before in the ancient streets of our misery.” \nProfessor Paces will discuss Kafka’s relationship to Prague’s rich Jewish heritage\, considering how he was influenced by the legacy of the Talmudic scholar Rabbi Loew and by folklore telling of the Golem of Prague\, a terrifying monster that Loew was said to have shaped from clay and given life. She’ll describe Kafka’s love for the Yiddish Theater and his involvement with the Prague Circle\, a group of German-Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein and the author Max Brod. \nWe’ll explore the tensions between Kafka’s creative endeavors and his work as a bureaucrat during Prague’s rapid modernization in the early twentieth century. You’ll learn about the Prague homes where he resided and cafés where he socialized. \nAlthough Prague place names appear in only one Kafka story\, the city shaped his fiction. The claustrophobic or ominous settings of works like The Metamorphosis and The Castle recall Prague’s labyrinthine streets\, modern office buildings\, and looming castle. We’ll listen for echoes of Prague’s landscape and landmarks in Kafka’s writings and end by exploring Kafka’s afterlife as a cultural icon of post-Communist Prague. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva.

SUMMARY:Philly Fringe: "BE GOOD!" WITH PAULETTE
DESCRIPTION:“BE GOOD!” WITH PAULETTE \nAn absurd character comedy show about the strangeness of good manners\, presented as part of Philly Fringe’s Cannonball Festival \nIntroducing the mildest man imaginable. Don’t ask about his black eye. \nPaulette stumbles into a theater full of the most people he’s ever seen\, and he doesn’t know whether to panic or mingle. Sporting a brown sweater and a hot-off-the-fist black eye\, he dares to approach the stage armed with nothing but an arsenal of pleasantries\, a pocketful of charm\, and a monumental fear of rejection. \nAudiences to date have described Paulette as “petite\,” “crow-like\,” and “not the sharpest\, but definitely the nicest.” With any luck\, Philly Fringe viewers will shower similar praise on his neatly combed head. \nCertified clown Daniel Maseda makes his solo debut with this unsolicited evening of giddy small talk madness that can’t help but be different every night. One thing is for certain: this show has something for anyone who just wants to scream at a polite person.

SUMMARY:What’s What Productions presents 2 Women\, 2 Mothers at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA: After a successful premiere in Toronto and the Bay Area\, What’s What Productions is proud to bring 2 Women\, 2 Mothers to the 2025 Fringe Festival at the Louis Bluver Theater at the Drake\, (302 S Hicks Street\, Philadelphia) running for a limited engagement on Sept 19 at 6:30 PM and September 20 at 4:45 PM \nThese 2 back-to-back solo shows featuring Vicki Dello Joio and Merry Ross\, explore the transformative nature of mother-daughter relationships — what it means to be a daughter and a mother (and sometimes both at the same time) with a little bit of “What the f**k!?” \n“After performing their last successful and award-winning show\, 2 Women\, 2 Stories at several Fringe Festivals around the country\, Vicki and Merry are super excited to join Philadelphia Fringe with their new show\, especially because it is Merry’s home town!” What’s What Productions \nIn It’s About Time\, Vicki navigates the challenging end-of-life journey she travels with her mother\, while celebrating and exploring the complex dynamics of their relationship. As Vicki transitions from daughter to mothering her own mother\, she finds the humor and sorrow in letting go with humor and heart\, using her expertise as a brilliant physical and character actor to tell stories of their relationship and that final passage. \nTherapy Fund is a comic and poignant exploration of her relationships with both Merry’s two daughters and her mother and grandmother. With consummate skill and expertise\, Merry walks the line between stand-up comedy and self-revelatory performance to look at how inter-generational trauma can be addressed and healed\, when one is committed to doing it differently and laughing at her own mistakes and foibles along the way. \nWhat’s What Productions has recently presented this show in Toronto and the Bay Area to  full houses and standing ovations \nWhat’s What Productions presents \n2 Women\, 2 Mothers \nSeptember 19 -20\, 2025 \nLouis Bluver Theater at the Drake\, (302 S Hicks Street\, Philadelphia) \n$25 \nTickets available at https://phillyfringe.org/events/2-women-2-mothers/. \n

Our dual goal is to make the classical music repertory accessible to all\, whether to first-time listeners or experienced audiences\, and to provide opportunities for our talented local artists. We believe everyone can enjoy classical music\, and we strive to give freelance musicians the opportunity to share that joy as much as possible! Our name was inspired by a newspaper publication founded by Benjamin Franklin Bache called the Philadelphia Aurora. Bache was a grandson of Benjamin Franklin\, and his paper stood for the rights of “plain folk.” Our focus is on sharing quality music with low-income communities. Classical music is for everyone regardless of your budget! \nAurora Classical of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia [https://auroraclassical.org/]\n

SUMMARY:Labyrinth of the Other
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated Philadelphia performer Severin Blake premieres their first solo work\, LABYRINTH OF THE OTHER (LOTO) – a queer reimagining of the Minotaur myth. A company member of immersive theater collective Applied Mechanics\, Severin Blake has spent years meditating on this ancient Greek story – an interspecies child\, othered by the world and imprisoned in a maze. Part performance\, part immersive ritual\, LOTO asks: Who are we beneath the mask of the monster? Who gets to define what the word monster means? LOTO is a ritual container for personal and collective healing. LABYRINTH OF THE OTHER  is an intimate immersive theatrical experience led by performer Severin Blake. Audience members may choose to shape their journey from a menu of “intentions” – deciding for themselves what path they would like to take through the narrative.

You’ll be invited to observe\, sketch\, photograph\, and reflect on the shifting landscapes and what the journey reveals about how place shapes us\, and vice versa. \nMid-journey\, we’ll make a special stop led by Keith Hartwig of Succession Fermentory. Get hands-on: he’ll guide us in foraging wild botanicals—think curious leaves and roots that might end up in our creative brew. Your finds might even become part of the Becoming Succession exhibition back at Street Road! \nWhen we arrive at Street Road Artists Space\, you’ll be greeted with a reception for Becoming Succession\, the new show that bubbles with stories of farms\, ferments\, and the land that binds us. Plus\, your own sketches and observations will join other participants’ contributions on display—you become part of the artwork itself. \nFinally\, our drift ends as the bus brings us full circle—back to Philly around 7 pm\, full of new sights\, stories\, and maybe even a few treasures from the field. All this for just $15\, with pay-what-you-can options available. \nWhether you’re an art wanderer\, plant lover\, or just someone wanting to shake up your weekend\, A(mobile)DRIFT is a delightfully unexpected way to travel between worlds—literally and imaginatively. \nWho’s Who at Street Road Artists Space (Cochranville\, PA) \n\nEmily Artinian – Founder of Street Road Artists Space\, Emily is the driving force behind this experimental venue\, connecting rural Pennsylvania with global ideas in art and writing.\nCarol Maurer – Artist and walking fellow-traveller\, Carol brings a reflective\, path-making spirit to Street Road’s projects.\nEmily Manko – The behind-the-scenes powerhouse at Street Road\, Emily keeps everything running smoothly and adds her own creative spark.\nHannah LeVasseur – Artist and plant enthusiast\, Hannah is co-curator (with Keith Hartwig) of Becoming Succession at Street Road\, exploring how farms\, ferments\, and art intertwine.\nKeith Hartwig – Artist\, designer\, and part of Philly’s Succession Fermentory and A Man Full of Trouble. Keith is a guest collaborator at Street Road and co-curator (with Hannah) of Becoming Succession. For A(mobile)DRIFT\, he’ll lead the foraging stop\, opening our senses to the wild botanicals around us.
