SUMMARY:Philly Fringe: "BE GOOD!" WITH PAULETTE
DESCRIPTION:“BE GOOD!” WITH PAULETTE \nAn absurd character comedy show about the strangeness of good manners\, presented as part of Philly Fringe’s Cannonball Festival \nIntroducing the mildest man imaginable. Don’t ask about his black eye. \nPaulette stumbles into a theater full of the most people he’s ever seen\, and he doesn’t know whether to panic or mingle. Sporting a brown sweater and a hot-off-the-fist black eye\, he dares to approach the stage armed with nothing but an arsenal of pleasantries\, a pocketful of charm\, and a monumental fear of rejection. \nAudiences to date have described Paulette as “petite\,” “crow-like\,” and “not the sharpest\, but definitely the nicest.” With any luck\, Philly Fringe viewers will shower similar praise on his neatly combed head. \nCertified clown Daniel Maseda makes his solo debut with this unsolicited evening of giddy small talk madness that can’t help but be different every night. One thing is for certain: this show has something for anyone who just wants to scream at a polite person.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Kafka and Prague
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Kafka and Prague\,” on how a great author and his works were shaped by the history\, culture\, and landscape of a city\, with Cynthia Paces\, professor of history at The College of New Jersey\, teacher of courses on European history and Holocaust studies\, and author of two books on Prague. \nWhere we’re from can profoundly shape how we think\, what we create\, and what we end up doing with our lives. Gain a much deeper understanding of Franz Kafka\, the acclaimed and influential author whose prophetic work anticipated European totalitarianism and still shapes dystopian visions\, through a talk examining Kafka’s relationship with the city of Prague and those who lived there. \nYour guide on this scholarly journey\, Professor Cynthia Paces\, has lived and worked in Prague and is the author of Prague: The Heart of Europe and Prague Panoramas: National Memory and Sacred Space in the Twentieth Century. She has extensively researched how Kafka\, a German-Jewish writer\, came to symbolize the capital of the Czech Republic. \nWe’ll start by looking at how Kafka’s worldview was influenced by his childhood in Prague’s Old Town during a time when the city was rapidly expanding and industrializing and shifting from being a primarily German-speaking place to being the center of Czech nationalism and culture. Born in 1883 only steps away from the city’s former Jewish Ghetto\, as a boy Kafka watched the destruction of the Jewish Quarter during an urban sanitation project. The event profoundly affected him\, prompting him to later remark: “We walk through the broad streets of the newly built town” but “inside we tremble just as before in the ancient streets of our misery.” \nProfessor Paces will discuss Kafka’s relationship to Prague’s rich Jewish heritage\, considering how he was influenced by the legacy of the Talmudic scholar Rabbi Loew and by folklore telling of the Golem of Prague\, a terrifying monster that Loew was said to have shaped from clay and given life. She’ll describe Kafka’s love for the Yiddish Theater and his involvement with the Prague Circle\, a group of German-Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein and the author Max Brod. \nWe’ll explore the tensions between Kafka’s creative endeavors and his work as a bureaucrat during Prague’s rapid modernization in the early twentieth century. You’ll learn about the Prague homes where he resided and cafés where he socialized. \nAlthough Prague place names appear in only one Kafka story\, the city shaped his fiction. The claustrophobic or ominous settings of works like The Metamorphosis and The Castle recall Prague’s labyrinthine streets\, modern office buildings\, and looming castle. We’ll listen for echoes of Prague’s landscape and landmarks in Kafka’s writings and end by exploring Kafka’s afterlife as a cultural icon of post-Communist Prague. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva.

SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner—A Flood of Pictures—Photography Deepens the Waters
DESCRIPTION:At this Weeknights at the Wagner talk\, Dr. Michael Leja will take us back to the formative period of this cultural transformation in the U.S.—three decades before the Civil War—when pictures began to permeate everyday life. This flood of images included illustrations in books\, pamphlets\, and newspapers; photographs on cards; prints of various kinds; posters and broadsheets; and large scale paintings for theatrical displays. In a short span of time pictures assumed important functions by supplementing\, and in some cases overshadowing\, verbal texts in conveying news and information.

SUMMARY:Let's Make An Album!
DESCRIPTION:LET’S MAKE AN ALBUM! is a new immersive performance series by Philadelphia pop-punk outfit Happier Than Ever\, attempting to break down the wall between artist and audience. Join the punk trio as they lead an evening of songwriting essentials\, guiding the audience through the process of crafting a song from initial idea to the first draft. Featuring vocalist and guitarist Jaden Alvaro Gines\, bassist Charlotte Horansky\, and drummer Connor Gotham\, the band will guide the audience through traditional songwriting structure\, lyrical storytelling\, and investigate the choices that are made behind each step of the songwriting process. By the end of the performance series\, the hope is to create a small album’s worth of music to be released following the completion of performances\, with the audience members being given writing credits. The goal is to erase the line between the artist and the musician\, and begin the audience’s participation in the work from the very beginning. Part performance\, part workshop\, part improv show- get your notebooks and pencils ready\, because it’s time to make an album!

SUMMARY:Producers' Forum: The Five Demands by Andrea Weiss and Greta Schiller
DESCRIPTION:The Five Demands by Andrea Weiss and Greta Schiller (USA\, 2023\, 74 minutes) \nIn April 1969\, a small group of Black and Puerto Rican students shut down the City College of New York\, an elite public university located right in the heart of Harlem.  Through archival footage and present-day interviews\, The Five Demands is the riveting story of a student strike fueled by the revolutionary fervor sweeping the United States at the time. The strike soon turned into an uprising\, leading to an extended campus occupation\, canceled classes\, student arrests\, and the college president’s resignation. \nGreta Schiller (Producer/Director) is an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker and co-founder of Jezebel Productions. Since 1984\, she has produced over a dozen films\, unearthing lost histories of marginalized groups and writing them into the cultural narrative. \nAndrea Weiss (Producer/Director) is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and founder\, with Greta Schiller\, of Jezebel Productions. Most recently\, she is Producer/Director/Editor of Bones of Contention\, a feature documentary delving into the historical memory movement in Spain and the unknown story of LGBT repression under the Franco dictatorship. She holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is Professor of Film at the City College of New York\, where she co-directs the MFA Program in Film.

SUMMARY:The Old Academy Players Presents Crimes of the Heart\, a Black Comedy by Beth Henley
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — As part of its 2025-2026 Season\, The Old Academy Players is proud to present Crimes of the Heart\, written by Beth Henley\, American playwright\, screenwriter\, and actress.  The Old Academy Players’ 548th production will run September 12-28\, 2025; with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and three Sunday matinées\, September 14th\, 21st and 28th at 2:00 pm. It is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc. \nHenley completed Crimes of the Heart in 1978 and submitted it to several regional theatres without success. Unbeknownst to her\, a friend entered it in the Great American Play Contest at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The play was first performed in February 1979 at the Actors Theatre Louisville and it was named co-winner of the contest. The play continued to be developed\, with productions in Los Gatos\, St. Louis\, and Baltimore at the Centre Stage Theatre. \nThe Manhattan Theatre Club produced the play Off-Broadway at Stage 73\, from December 9\, 1980\, to January 11\, 1981\, for 35 sold-out performances. The play opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on November 4\, 1981\, and closed on February 13\, 1983\, after 535 performances and 13 previews. \nCrimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, the 1981 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play\, and a nomination for a Tony Award. Henley’s screenplay for Crimes of the Heart was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. \nReviews indicated: \n“While this play overflows with infectious high spirits\, it is also\, unmistakably\, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley’s prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake.” —The New York Times. \n“It has heart\, wit and a surprisingly zany passion that must carry all before it…it would certainly be a crime for anyone interested in the theatre not to see this play.” —New York Post \n“From time to time a play comes along that restores one’s faith in our theatre…” —New York Magazine. \nSynopsis: The tragicomedy relates the story of the three Magrath sisters\, Meg\, Babe\, and Lenny\, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst\, Mississippi\, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe’s latest incident. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the “crimes of the heart” she has committed.  Warning: Contains adult themes and adult language\, it is not suitable for young children. Viewer discretion is advised. \nOld Academy Players’ stellar cast includes:  Eric Rupp as Doc Porter\, Jennifer Sivers-Roberts as Lenny Magrath\, Kyle Mitchell as Barnette Lloyd\, Laura Young as Meg Magrath\, Samantha Simpson as Chick Boyle\, and Serena Pearl as Babe Botrelle. \nChristopher Wunder directs.  Old Academy Players’ production team includes:  Annie Hnatko\, Steve Hnatko\, Josh Tull\, Producers; and Alyssia Sims\, Stage Manager. \nTicket prices are: $25 per adult; $15 for Students under 25 with valid ID; group rate (15 or more) $21 each. SUMMARY:Old Academy Players presents Disenchanted!
DESCRIPTION:Disenchanted! By Dennis T. Giacino\nDirected by Annie Hnatko \nApril 25th\, 26th; May 2nd\, 3rd\, 4th\, 9th\, 10th\, 11th\, 2025\nFriday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.\, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. \nPoison apples and lost slippers are just the beginning. The original storybook heroines are none-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture\, so they’ve tossed their tiaras and have come to life to set the record straight. Forget the princesses you think you know — these royal renegades are here to comically belt out the truth. Received an “Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Outer Critics Circle Awards) and a “Best New Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Off-Broadway Alliance). \nContent Warning: Contains adult language and content.
