SUMMARY:The Old Academy Players Presents Crimes of the Heart\, a Black Comedy by Beth Henley
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — As part of its 2025-2026 Season\, The Old Academy Players is proud to present Crimes of the Heart\, written by Beth Henley\, American playwright\, screenwriter\, and actress.  The Old Academy Players’ 548th production will run September 12-28\, 2025; with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and three Sunday matinées\, September 14th\, 21st and 28th at 2:00 pm. It is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc. \nHenley completed Crimes of the Heart in 1978 and submitted it to several regional theatres without success. Unbeknownst to her\, a friend entered it in the Great American Play Contest at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The play was first performed in February 1979 at the Actors Theatre Louisville and it was named co-winner of the contest. The play continued to be developed\, with productions in Los Gatos\, St. Louis\, and Baltimore at the Centre Stage Theatre. \nThe Manhattan Theatre Club produced the play Off-Broadway at Stage 73\, from December 9\, 1980\, to January 11\, 1981\, for 35 sold-out performances. The play opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on November 4\, 1981\, and closed on February 13\, 1983\, after 535 performances and 13 previews. \nCrimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, the 1981 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play\, and a nomination for a Tony Award. Henley’s screenplay for Crimes of the Heart was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. \nReviews indicated: \n“While this play overflows with infectious high spirits\, it is also\, unmistakably\, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley’s prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake.” —The New York Times. \n“It has heart\, wit and a surprisingly zany passion that must carry all before it…it would certainly be a crime for anyone interested in the theatre not to see this play.” —New York Post \n“From time to time a play comes along that restores one’s faith in our theatre…” —New York Magazine. \nSynopsis: The tragicomedy relates the story of the three Magrath sisters\, Meg\, Babe\, and Lenny\, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst\, Mississippi\, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe’s latest incident. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the “crimes of the heart” she has committed.  Warning: Contains adult themes and adult language\, it is not suitable for young children. Viewer discretion is advised. \nOld Academy Players’ stellar cast includes:  Eric Rupp as Doc Porter\, Jennifer Sivers-Roberts as Lenny Magrath\, Kyle Mitchell as Barnette Lloyd\, Laura Young as Meg Magrath\, Samantha Simpson as Chick Boyle\, and Serena Pearl as Babe Botrelle. \nChristopher Wunder directs.  Old Academy Players’ production team includes:  Annie Hnatko\, Steve Hnatko\, Josh Tull\, Producers; and Alyssia Sims\, Stage Manager. \nTicket prices are: $25 per adult; $15 for Students under 25 with valid ID; group rate (15 or more) $21 each. SUMMARY:Klorkhana: The Tyrant World Premiere of a Science Fiction Opera about a Tyrant who takes over a planet
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — “Klorkhana: The Tyrant\,” will be presented in full in a concert setting.  Both book and music are written by Kate Quinn. \nKlorkhana is the official Mind Healer of the planet of Sephro but instead of healing minds\, he corrupts them.  He projects false love into people in exchange for stealing their energies for his own use.  His favorite thing to do is rob women of their special spiritual essences that help heal minds and bodies in ways men can’t duplicate.  Klorkhana and many men of Sephro are envious of women for having certain gifts men don’t possess.  Instead of appreciating what they have\, they want what they don’t have\, at any cost.  Klorkhana soon has almost every man on planet Sephro following him\, particularly one susceptable young man named Aulio.  Together\, he and Klorkhana are determined to steal what women have\, and use it for themselves. \nOnly Coran\, Warrior Overseer and Security Chief of the entire planet\, her mate Tanna and Klorkhana’s former mate Destylla are able to form an army to stop this tyrant.  No matter what the outcome\, these rebels are determined to bring Planet Sephro back to its former glory. \nThe opera concert will take place with the Philly Fringe on Thursday and Friday\, September 18 & 19\, 2025 at 7:00 pm at The Rotunda\, 4014 Walnut Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104. \nAdmission:  Pay what you can (PWYC) Options \nDuration: Opera – approximately 1 hour in length plus a Talk Back Q & A session (1 hr) after the opera \nThis event is part of the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. \nClick https://phillyfringe.org/events/klorkhana-the-tyrant/ for more info or to RSVP. \n

The event takes place at SPIN Philadelphia and includes a silent auction where attendees can bid on the artwork created during the night. It’s an event that brings together live art\, community\, and creativity in one space.

SUMMARY:Producers' Forum: The Encampments by Kei Pritsker & Michael T. Workman
DESCRIPTION:The Encampments \n(United States/Palestine\, 2025\, 81 minutes) \nA group of students set up camp on the lawn of Columbia University in New York to protest against the war in Gaza and their own university’s investment in the US and Israeli arms industry.  An action that made waves around the world and quickly grew into the largest protest movement since the Vietnam War. THE ENCAMPMENTS follows the central organizers of the encampment as they are thrust into the spotlight and a recently detained student activist\, Mahmoud Khalil. \npreceded by the short film\, “On the Rooftop” directed by Noor Al-Terri \nOn the Rooftop \n(Palestine\, 2023\, 3 minutes) \nIn Jabalia Refugee Camp\, the most densely populated camp in a very small space\, life and laughter emerged from its alleys. There\, guests are invited to share a cup of mint tea\, and because not all surfaces are made of stones and wires\, life is created on rooftops with flowers and green leaves.

SUMMARY:new heaven new earth
DESCRIPTION:Bold Afro-Centric reimagining of Antony & Cleopatra returns after sold-out Philly Theatre Week Debut \nShakespeare in Clark Park (SCP)\, in collaboration with Upstream Performance Collaborative (UPC) and Cannonball\, presents new heaven new earth\, a bold\, revisionist Afrocentric adaptation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra by multidisciplinary artist Rayne. Directed by SCP Producing Artistic Director Shamus and featuring live music by Karen Smith\, this allegorical work blends ancient history with poetic futurism\, as Cleopatra faces off against a soothsaying Crocodile on the edge of empire and asks “when peace demands war\, what will you become\, and for whom?” Following an oversold\, one-night premiere at Philly Theatre Week\, new heaven new earth continues its development with two staged readings at The Proscenium at The Drake\, running September 1-16\, 2025. \nThe reading stars a host of Barrymore Award recognized talent and Shakespeare in Clark Park alumni including Kishia Nixon as Cleopatra\, Ross Beschler as Marc Antony\, STARFIRE as Charmian & Crocodile\, Adam Howard as Octavius et al\, Dante Brattelli as Enobarbus et al\, and Katherine Perry as Octavia et al. Live percussion is performed by Karen Smith\, a 2023 Pew Fellowship recipient known for her percussion-based collaborations and leadership of The Karen Smith Experience and Sistahs Laying Down Hands. \nnew heaven new earth was commissioned by Shakespeare in Clark Park in 2024 as part of a season-long initiative to develop original works in direct conversation with Shakespeare’s text and uplift Queer\, Trans and Non-Binary voices. Rayne’s plays have been produced or developed with Primary Stages\, Theatre Exile\, Azuka Theatre\, PlayPenn\, and more\, supported by the Leeway Foundation\, Independence Foundation\, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. Ouch. \nThey proceed to the back of the Trestle Inn\, where\, hidden behind an ominous curtain\, shapeshifter Grace Lazarz unleashes a bevy of lovably grotesque characters into the intimate Go-Go purgatory. \nLazarz and director/collaborator\, Michael Amendola\, invite the audience to follow a whirligig of comic delirium while a chorus of 2 57 13 … 5 stagehands try to piece together a psyche with bubblegum and bum notes… before time runs out. \nGet your steps in\, lewk mortality in the eye(s)\, and discover the beauty of aging car mechanics and mutated pig innkeepers. “5SFOOAC(TGC)” is an absurdity that will stay with you until your cosmic punch(ouch)line. \n*Characters created by various imbalances. \n********************************** \nGenre: Comedy\, Theater \nContent Warnings: Adult Language\, Audience Interaction \nADA Accessible Venue

SUMMARY:Buen Camino
DESCRIPTION:Susan has a perfect life\, a perfect love\, and perfect happiness. When she suddenly undergoes an unexpected loss\, her perfect life ends. \nConsumed by excruciating pain\, she finds it impossible to imagine any future worth living. Until\, on an ordinary trip to the grocery store\, she hears The Voice. The trouble is\, Susan doesn’t believe in Voices. And yet\, when The Voice tells her to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain\, she obeys despite knowing nothing about this ancient pilgrimage. \nWith only her pack and her pain\, Susan begins a journey through unrelenting rain and temperatures that rarely get above 50 degrees. With the help of some improbable Spiritual Guides\, a little bit of magic\, and the Camino itself\, Susan must face her past to have any hope of creating her future. \nAlone on stage\, she becomes 23 characters to take the audience on her solitary walk through 540 miles of rain\, resentment\, and redemption. Buen Camino is a moving story about grief leading to surrender\, and ultimately to freedom.
