He will give teachings and guide meditations on the use of contemplation in a meditation practice.  \nGen Kelsang Wangpo has been a devoted student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for over 20 years\, he has taught Kadampa Buddhism across the U.S. Gen Wangpo is known for his practical approach to presenting ancient Buddhist wisdom. He is deeply appreciated for his clear\, inspiring teachings and his ability to connect with others through loving-kindness and compassionate care. The number of parks throughout Philadelphia increases dramatically each year on the third Friday in September\, when activists\, artists\, architects\, and other citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks. Known as PARKing) Day\, this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of 140 square feet of public space. The event is a global\, public\, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer\, greener\, and more equitable streets for people. \nHow did it start? PARK(ing) Day was founded by Rebar\, a San Francisco art and design studio\, in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for green spaces in urban environments. Philadelphia celebrated PARK(ing) Day for the first time in 2008 with over 25 installations for relaxing\, cycling\, creating art\, education\, and socializing.

SUMMARY:Poetry is for Everyone: August Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We get it: it can be daunting to dip your toes into poetry. You may not be sure where to start. That’s why H&H Books started a new book club: Poetry is for Everyone. \nOur next meeting is Sunday\, August 17 at 2 PM at Valerio Coffee Roasters (2331 Frankford Avenue). We’ll discuss Open Source by Warren C. Longmire—and Warren himself will join us for our discussion! Warren is from North Philadelphia\, and Open Source is published by Radiator Press\, a Philly-based poetry publisher. You can read more about Open Source and Warren’s background on H&H’s website. \nParticipants are highly encouraged to read the book before the meeting in order to participate fully. H&H staffer Kristen will ask questions & facilitate discussion\, and participants will share their thoughts and impressions of the month’s selection. DESCRIPTION:The Yo Adrienne! Improv Festival is a three-day improvisational comedy extravaganza\, the largest event of its kind in the greater Philadelphia region. The festival will take place August 29-31\, 2025\, at the Adrienne Theater\, Philly’s home for improv comedy. \nSplit across three days and two stages\, the festival will feature nonstop laughter and unforgettable performances\, brought to life by some of the most exciting improvisers working today. Headlining acts include Schmooty!\, a top independent team in Philadelphia\, and Man vs. Movie\, an acclaimed one-man show featuring Paul Vaillancourt\, a veteran Los Angeles–based improviser who cofounded iO West and authored The Triangle of the Scene. Other acts include Bird and Friends: Cosmic Unity (New York City)\, Awkward Conversations (Hartford\, Connecticut)\, BABE (Richmond\, Virginia)\, Barbra (Harrisburg\, Pennsylvania)\, Improvised Columbo (New York City)\, and 1800CHANGEDMYLIFE (Austin\, Texas). The festival also features workshops taught by Paul Vaillancourt\, with topics including Triangle of the Scene\, The Slacker\, and Starting Scenes Stronger. Rounding out the festival is a series of improv jams—perfect opportunities for seasoned improvisers and first-time performers alike. \nThe Yo Adrienne! Improv Festival is independently produced by Sam Miller (Bark0)\, Dominick Arp (SideQuest Theater)\, Renata Rabinovich (Hat on a Hat)\, and Kiran Pandey (From the Future)\, four prolific Philadelphia improvisers who are excited to provide a showcase for Philadelphia’s vibrant improv comedy scene. \nThe festival runs August 29–31\, 2025\, with performances starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sunday. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated Philadelphia performer Severin Blake premieres their first solo work\, LABYRINTH OF THE OTHER (LOTO) – a queer reimagining of the Minotaur myth. A company member of immersive theater collective Applied Mechanics\, Severin Blake has spent years meditating on this ancient Greek story – an interspecies child\, othered by the world and imprisoned in a maze. Part performance\, part immersive ritual\, LOTO asks: Who are we beneath the mask of the monster? Who gets to define what the word monster means? LOTO is a ritual container for personal and collective healing. LABYRINTH OF THE OTHER  is an intimate immersive theatrical experience led by performer Severin Blake. Audience members may choose to shape their journey from a menu of “intentions” – deciding for themselves what path they would like to take through the narrative.

SUMMARY:Storyville: Bumpa by Kayla Naomi Watkins
DESCRIPTION:This documentary will explore the Afro-Caribbean dance\, ‘whining’ alongside the practice of twerking to analyze respectability politics\, pressures to accommodate whiteness\, and gendered criticism of sexual expression within the Black diaspora. Using archival footage of West African dance\, expert opinion from dancing and gender studies professors\, and the active participation of partygoers in a dance experiment\, I will paint the picture of the defiance\, autonomy\, and ancestral veneration intrinsic to these traditional movement styles. \nKayla Naomi Watkins is a Baltimorean Trinidadian Documentarian based in Philly with a focus in media education and documentary production. Watkins’ work covers issues that impact Black\, brown\, working-class\, and femme communities.
