SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Philadelphia and the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Philadelphia and the Underground Railroad\,” with Andrew Diemer\, professor of history at Towson University and author of Vigilance: The Life of William Still\, Father of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Underground Railroad has long been cloaked in legend\, with that legend only growing over time as filmmakers and novelists have provided their own takes on it and old houses have been claimed to have concealed areas that hid fugitive slaves. Local historians eagerly trace out the tracks of this railroad\, identifying its “stations” and “stationmasters” and “conductors\,” but other professional historians remain skeptical of such claims. \nHear Underground Railroad fact sorted from fiction\, and learn about Philadelphia’s pivotal role as a center of efforts to free people from bondage\, when historian Andrew Diemer comes to the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown. \nDrawing heavily from his biography of William Still\, the leader of Philadelphia abolitionist group who helped well over 600 enslaved people reach freedom\, Professor Diemer will discuss the origins and operations of the Underground Railroad. He’ll talk about how people escaped from slavery\, who helped them\, and how Underground Railroad activists dealt with a political and legal system that favored slavecatchers. You’ll learn about the relationship that Black activists like Still and his ally Harriet Tubman had with white conspirators\, many of them Quakers. \nDiemer will discuss the life of Still\, a free-born son of parents who had escaped from slavery\, and how he came to become a pivotal figure in Philadelphia’s organized defense of fugitive slaves\, the Vigilance Committee. You’ll learn how Still kept meticulous records of his efforts to aid fugitive slaves and then drew from those records in writing his monumental 1872 history The Underground Railroad\, which brought to life the stories of hundreds of fugitives who had fled to Philadelphia and described how the fugitives themselves were the Underground Railroad’s engine. \nIt’s a talk that will bring to life a chapter of history that too many have sought to bury or obscure. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: “Resurrection of Henry Box Brown\,” an illustration from William Still’s 1872 book The Underground Railroad. (New York Public Library Schomberg Center.)

SUMMARY:Poetry is for Everyone Book Club
DESCRIPTION:We get it: it can be daunting to dip your toes into poetry. You may not be sure where to start. That’s why H&H Books is starting a new book club: Poetry is for Everyone \nWe’ll gather at Valerio Coffee Roasters in Fishtown and discuss a poetry collection selected by H&H staffers (and poets!) Kristen Brida and Shoshana Bockol. During the book club\, we’ll share our thoughts and impressions of that month’s selection\, and Kristen and Shoshana will offer guidance and ask questions to facilitate the conversation. \nPoetry for Everyone is truly meant for everyone\, whether you have an MFA and or haven’t read poetry since Shel Silverstein’s Falling Up (a classic!) \nOur next book club will be May 17th at 2pm at the Valerio right down the street from our shop. \nFor our May pick\, we’ll discuss Root Fractures by Diana Khoi Nguyen (make sure you’ve read at least some of the poems!). Poet Victoria Chang has called Root Fractures a “beautiful and heartbreaking book “ where a “leaping imagistic declarative sentence becomes fractured and unreliable\, as a way to parse and thread memories and feelings.”

SUMMARY:Public Archaeology at Newlin Grist Mill
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nExcavations this season are planned for the Trimble farm complex in the Historic Area. The Trimble family built their house on the property adjoining the Mill in 1739 and\, over time\, built a whole complex of structures to support the operations of their household and farm. By conducting archaeological studies in the area around the Trimble House\, the Newlin Grist Mill staff hopes to learn more about the people who lived and worked there in the 18th\, 19th\, and early 20th centuries. \nScheduled 2025 Public Archaeology Days:\nMarch 15\nApril 19\nMay 17\nJune 21\nJuly 19\nOctober 18 – International Archaeology Day \n10am-3pm. Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend.
