SUMMARY:Introduction to Figure Drawing: Starting at the TOP - The Human Head
DESCRIPTION:This one-day drawing workshop will focus on the structure of the head and neck as it relates to figure drawing. We’ll begin with a discussion of basic artistic anatomy – covering the structure of the human skull and surface musculature – along with simple proportion systems that artists have used for centuries. Principles of light and shade will also be introduced. \nBy gaining a basic understanding of skeletal structure and musculature\, artists can “see through” the surface and draw from life with greater clarity and confidence\, capturing not just what’s visible\, but the internal structures that shape what we see. \nAfter the initial discussion\, participants will draw from both a full-scale model of the human skull and a life model\, with a focus on the head and neck. \nA creative endeavor\, such as drawing\, is a form of meditation – one in which you are fully engaged and grounded in the present in a most wonderful way. Drawing is a very personal expression of one’s particular vision\, intention\, and motivation. There is no single ‘correct’ way to draw the figure. This workshop is designed to offer a few tools that you can take with you and use in your own way. \nWe will spend most of our time drawing\, aiming to create a pleasant\, enriching experience for all. \nMaterials (minimal):\n• Drawing pad – 9×12” or 11×14” (not too big\, not too small)\n• Drawing materials – graphite or charcoal pencils\, mechanical pencil (whatever you’re comfortable with)\n• Kneaded rubber eraser

SUMMARY:Artist as Activist
DESCRIPTION:Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum\nPresents\nARTIST AS ACTIVIST\nthe New Jersey State Council on the Arts\n2025 ARTS ANNUAL ARTISTS \nGLASSBORO\, NJ – Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is excited to announce the participating artists who will be included in the 2025 New Jersey Arts Annual for Fine Art\, presented in partnership with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, opening Saturday\, June 7th\, 2025\, 4 -7 pm. \nOur esteemed jurors\, Brittany Webb\, Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of 20th Century Art and the John Rhoden Collection\, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)\, and Dejay Duckett\, Director of Curatorial Services\, African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) selected artists from over 300 entries and include:\nCatherine Allen\, ShinYoung An\, Ellis Angel\, Donna Bassin\, Kristian Battell\,\nKirstin Demer\, Laura Frazure\, Ellen Hanauer\, Sam Horowitz\, Christopher Lopez\, Chanika Svetvilas\, Hui Tian\, Ylvia Asal\, Michael DalCerro\, Adam Gustavson\,\nTony Khawam\, Krystle Lemonias\, Jazlyne Sabree\, and Alan Willoughby\, \nArtist as Activist presents work that are artistic responses to the concept of activism. The selected artists use their creative practices to challenge societal norms\, raise awareness\, and inspire audiences to engage critically with the world around them.\nThe works address a broad spectrum of urgent topics—including human rights\, environmental stewardship\, racial equity\, health and well-being\, and political engagement. \nRather than employing overt or reactionary tactics\, these artists adopt a more nuanced approach. Their work invites viewers to engage with complex issues on their own terms\, promoting personal reflection and dialogue rather than prescribing a singular viewpoint.\nSome artists employ humor to disarm and draw in the viewer\, while others use ambiguity or conceptual forms to allow multiple interpretations. Scale is also used deliberately\, amplifying the urgency of the challenges we face collectively.\nUltimately\, this exhibition presents art as a vehicle for advocacy—illuminating injustices\, proposing alternatives\, and envisioning change. Through emotion\, experience\, and truth\, these artists seek to cultivate empathy\, spark conversation\, and inspire action. \nThe New Jersey Arts Annual is a unique series of exhibitions highlighting the State’s visual and performing artists. In partnership with major museums around the state\, one exhibition takes place each year\, alternating between host institutions. These exhibitions are open to any artist currently living or working in New Jersey. The Arts Annual series is sponsored by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts. Since 1984\, the New Jersey State Arts Council has co-sponsored the prestigious Annual in keeping with its mission to encourage and foster public interest in the arts\, promote freedom of expression in the arts\, and to facilitate the inclusion of art in every building in New Jersey. To learn more about the Council\, please visit www.artscouncil.nj.gov. \nAbout the New Jersey State Council on the Arts: The New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, created in 1966\, is a division of the NJ Department of State. SUMMARY:Concert: MANAS
DESCRIPTION:MANAS was formed in 2012 by guitarist Tashi Dorji and drummer Thom Nguyen. The intensity of their live shows\, characterized by Dorji’s angular guitar preparations and Nguyen’s multi-limbed maelstroms exploding outwards in parallel\, immediately caught the ear of the sub-underground. For this special show\, MANAS will expand into a quartet (or “double duo”) with the addition of drummer Lesley Mok and guitarist Che Chen. \nThe show will open with Damien Scalise\, a guitarist\, improviser\, composer and performer based in Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Arianna Rebolini presents BETTER: A MEMOIR ABOUT WANTING TO DIE
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome Arianna Rebolini to H&H Books to celebrate the release of her debut memoir\, BETTER: A MEMOIR ABOUT WANTING TO DIE\, on Tuesday\, June 10 at 7 PM. \nPhilly-based author Emma Copley Eisenberg (HOUSEMATES) will be Arianna’s conversation partner. You can learn more about the authors and their work on H&H’s website. \nCopies of BETTER and HOUSEMATES are available in-store at H&H Books and on our ecommerce site\, and they’ll be available the evening of the event\, too. \nRead more about BETTER below. \nAbout the book: \nAfter a decade of therapy and a stint in a psychiatric ward to treat suicidal depression\, Arianna Rebolini was “better.” She’d published her first book\, enjoyed an influential\, rewarding publishing job\, and celebrated both a marriage and the birth of her first child–but none of it was enough to keep the desire to die at bay. One night\, grappling with overwhelming debt and a prolonged depression\, she composed goodbye letters to her husband and son while they slept just feet away. \nIn BETTER: A MEMOIR ABOUT WANTING TO DIE\, Arianna Rebolini interweaves the story of her month-long period of crisis with decades of personal and family history\, from her first cry for help in the fourth grade with a plastic knife\, to her fears of passing down the dark seed of suicide to her own son\, and her brother’s own life-threatening affliction. \nTo make sense of this dark desire\, Arianna pored over the journals\, memoirs\, and writings of famous suicides\, and eventually developed theories on what makes a person suicidal. Her curiosity was driven by the morbid\, impossible need to understand what happens in the fatal moment between wanting to kill oneself and doing it—or\, unthinkably\, the moment between regretting the action and realizing it can’t be undone. When her own brother became institutionalized\, Arianna realized that all of the patterns and trenchant insights could not crack the shell of his annihilating depression—and that the only way to help a person live is to address the societal factors that make them want to die. \n“Brutally candid and … also a strangely and beautifully optimistic reverie on coming clean about our darkest and most intimate struggles while slowly coming to terms with the idea that we might possibly be worthy of love\, help\, and…life.” – Hannah Pittard\, author of WE ARE TOO MANY \n“There are readers for whom this may become the most important book they ever read.” – Chloé Cooper Jones\, author of EASY BEAUTY \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Opening Reception: The Luminous Forest - Lanny Bergner
DESCRIPTION:As a resident of Fidalgo Island\, Washington State\, Lanny Bergner has been inspired by the lush diversity of nature in the Pacific Northwest woodlands for most of his life. Daily nature exposure – whether through forestland hikes or garden walks – nurtures Lanny’s appreciation for the mysterious life force existing around him. \nThis series of work reflects Lanny’s response to that environment. He creates his vision using man-made materials of metal mesh\, monofilament\, wire\, acrylic pigments and glass frit that he flame paints\, knots\, twists and hand models\, transforming these elements into ethereal constructions. \nViewers are invited to enter a forest-like environment expressed through embossed mesh wall panels accentuated with leaf shapes\, as well as with hanging pods containing luminescent biomorphic structures. Wall mounted basket forms in dialogue with suspended geometric works complete the assemblage and act as codices for the gallery installation hinting at the mysteries of it all.
