SUMMARY:Tongue & Groove: Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2006\, Tongue & Groove performs spontaneous theater – from hilarious to heartbreaking – inspired by real life experiences. \nIn October’s Secrets show\, each audience member is given an index card\, a pen\, and a provocative prompt: “Share a secret you keep.” Encouraged to answer honestly\, the audience anonymously submits their responses\, which are randomly drawn by the actors and read aloud. The ensemble then spontaneously performs a montage of funny and touching scenes & monologues inspired by their audience-collaborators’ submissions\, exploring the experiences that connect us all.

SUMMARY:Franklin Tree Planting at Carpenters' Hall
DESCRIPTION:On April 25 at 10 a.m.\, Ben Franklin will join the Carpenters’ Company\, OLIN\, Bartram’s Garden\, and the National Park Service to plant two rare extinct-in-the-wild “”Franklin trees”” in front of Carpenters’ Hall\, home of the First Continental Congress. \nThese Franklinia Alatamaha\, or Franklin trees\, were named in the 1700s by the namesake of Bartram’s Garden\, John Bartram\, a naturalist considered the “father of American botany\,” and his son William. The Bartrams collected seeds\, named the tree in honor of their family friend Ben Franklin\, and began cultivating the trees in Philadelphia. \nThe Franklin Tree is known for its large\, cream-colored flowers; glossy\, narrow leaves; deeply colored fall foliage with late-blooming blossoms; and bright yellow-orange pollen-producing stamens. Every Franklin tree alive today descends from the seeds originally cultivated at Bartram’s Garden by William Bartram and his family. These trees are extinct in the wild today and exist only in botanical gardens and arboreta. \nAlso assisting in the tree planting will be: State Rep. Mary Isaacson\, Kathryn Ott Lovell\, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center\, and Jennifer Nagle\, vice president of special projects at the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. \nFun facts: Carpenters’ Hall is the site of Benjamin Franklin’s Library Company of Philadelphia\, secret meetings between Benjamin Franklin\, John Jay\, Fancis Daymon\, and French emissary Julien Achard de Bonvouloir which led to French support of the colonists\, and The Franklin Institute’s first home.

SUMMARY:Basics of Drawing: Figure Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to “Figure It Out: Basics of Figure Drawing\,” your four-session workshop into the wonderful world of visual art! Whether you can barely draw a stick figure or you’re already doodling masterpieces\, this class is designed to empower you to capture the human form with flair and confidence. \nIn the first session\, we’ll break the ice with some basic anatomy and proportions—think of it as a crash course in seeing the human body like never before. We’ll explore simple shapes and lines to get the ball rolling. By the end\, you’ll be sketching figures that look like people. \nSessions 2 – 4 will combine learning techniques\, such as movement\, gesture\, shading\, and texture\, with a figure model. So grab your sketchbook and let’s get drawing—because every masterpiece starts with a single line! \n*Students must bring a Newsprint sketchbook (11×14). All other supplies will be provided

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Life of Barbie
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Life of Barbie\,” on a plastic icon and her cultural legacy\, with Emily Aguiló-Pérez\, an associate professor of English at West Chester University of Pennsylvania who has extensively researched Barbie as a scholar of childhood\, media\, and popular culture. \nFew toys have shaped culture quite like Barbie has. From her debut in 1959 to the billion-dollar success of the 2023 film bearing her name\, Barbie has been a mirror of society\, a lightning rod for controversy\, and a symbol of transformation. She often has found herself at the center of society’s evolving conversations about gender\, race\, consumerism\, and identity. \nGet to know Barbie like you never did before with the help of Emily Aguiló-Pérez\, the author of An American Icon in Puerto Rico: Barbie\, Girlhood\, and Colonialism at Play and the forthcoming books Barbie in the Media and Barbie and Social Media. \nDrawing from more than a decade of scholarly research on Barbie’s significance in global contexts\, Professor Aguiló-Pérez will discuss Barbie’s evolution from fashion model to feminist (and anti-feminist) flashpoint. While Barbie wasn’t originally designed as a feminist toy\, she would emerge as an emblem of female empowerment\, with the first astronaut Barbie\, produced in 1965\, exploring space before Neil Armstrong visited the Moon. At the same time\, she would continue to face criticism for reinforcing restrictive beauty norms\, with her measurements remaining unrealistic even in the “body diverse” versions of the doll—curvy\, petite and tall. \nWe’ll explore Barbie’s shifting cultural impact—her role in shaping beauty standards\, gender expectations\, and consumer culture. You’ll learn about Barbie’s global influence and how she continues to spark conversations about identity\, inclusivity\, and play. \nWhether you loved Barbie\, loathed her\, or rediscovered her through Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie movie\, you’ll find this talk to be a fascinating journey through the life of the world’s most famous doll\, and you’ll learn a lot about what she reveals about us. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A Barbie doll as photographed by Tracheotomy Bob / Creative Commons.

SUMMARY:From Kelpius to the Rod of Iron: Cults and New Religious Movements in Pennsylvania
DESCRIPTION:The state of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia are home to a diverse array of churches and religious organizations. This program will outline the history of some of the most famous religious monuments of our region. We will begin in the 17th century with the figure of Johannes Kelpius\, a German Pietist who established an apocalyptic religious community in the Wissahickon Valley. We will then move to the 19th century to examine the Theosophical Society\, a new religion that merged East and West\, whose United Lodge is still located in Center City. We will conclude by discussing the Iron Rod Ministries\, an offshoot of the Korean American Unification Church\, which until recently was headquartered in Wayne County\, east of the city of Scranton. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. He studies the history of utopian thought\, new religious movements\, and the intersection between religion and the state. \nAttend this program in person in the Education\, Philosophy and Religion Department\, or view it live on Zoom by registering at https://freelibrary-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_cNQ2q3fvQ4CqWBN9IgeFXw#/registration
