DESCRIPTION:Announcing the return of The Low Pass presents SOUND STUDIO. As always\, we have been working our butts off to bring you the finest in experimental sound and vision and you *absolutely* will not want to miss this audio-visual spectacle that will have you questioning the very fabric of reality. \nArtists Matthew D. Gantt’s work has been featured in The Wire magazine\, Pop Matters\, Exclaim!\, Tiny Mix Tapes\, Bandcamp New and Notable\, the Brooklyn Rail and similar. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/gan.tttt/ \nJOSHUE OTT is an award-winning visualist and experiential designer whose distinct visual work\, cinematic improvisations and composed evolving images have been performed live and projected in large-scale at Mutek\, Carnegie Hall\, Ars Electronica\, Baryshnikov Art Center\, Visiones Sonoras (Mexico) and Gyeonggi Media Performance Festival (South Korea). Supple yet digital\, ephemeral but instantly memorable\, Ott renders sound into vision\, yielding an immersive multi-sensory experience that is at once immediate and synergistic: a unique visual narrative born in the moment. Ott has been a resident artist with Eyebeam (NYC) and Times Square Arts\, and is a recipient of the 2022 NYFA Fellowship for Architecture and Environmental Design. Ott creates hand-drawn forms manipulated in real-time using superDraw\, a software instrument of his own design. Ott is also the creator of several popular iPhone apps: Thicket\, 3Draw\, snowDrift\, Pitch Painter with Morton Subotnick\, and the Variant series. He currently runs Interval Studios\, a small software development company specializing in time-based interactive experiences. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/avretect/ \nAbout The Low Pass and Sound Studio: \nThe Low Pass Presents Sound Studio is a recurring concert series based in Philadelphia that gives special focus to electronic artists pushing the limits of the medium. Past shows may be viewed at\nhttps://mattohare.com/soundstudio/ \nThe Low Pass is a non-profit organization focused on making art and technology more accessible through cultural and educational events. In addition to the Sound Studio concert series\, we also organize “ambient open mic” where electronic musicians both new and established come to share their work in a fun and low-stakes environment. SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Medieval Sex
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Medieval Sex\,” a look at the reality of medieval sex and sexuality through the lens of comic literature\, satire\, and obscenity\, with Larissa “Kat” Tracy\, professor of medieval literature and author of several books on the Middle Ages. \nCome to the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown for a fascinating\, rollicking look at how medieval people navigated sex in their time. \nThe speaker\, Professor Kat Tracy\, has appeared on Wondrium’s series Sex in the Middle Ages and the History Channel’s Dark Marvels\, and has previously given excellent Profs and Pints talks on medieval torture and the pagan origins of late winter holidays. \nThis time out\, Professor Tracy discusses how the sex lives of medieval people were framed by religious edicts and secular laws\, how they skirted those restrictions\, and found outlets in sexual humor and displays. \nMedieval discussions of sex were most common in humorous literature that used satire\, double entendres\, obscenity\, and dirty jokes\, often to engage in political commentary or draw attention to bigger social issues. We’ll look at how great writers of that time found ways to discuss sex while escaping censure from the Catholic Church\, and we’ll tackle the question of whether medieval society truly was more prudish than our own. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 4 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: An illustration by Giovannino de’ Grassi from the late 1300s.

SUMMARY:Temple Theaters Presents: OUR COUNTRY'S GOOD
DESCRIPTION:Our Country’s Good \nBy Timberlake Wertenbaker \nDirected by Taylor Harlow \nFebruary 21st\, 22nd\, 23rd. \nAustralia in 1789 is a hellish hole for English prisoners brought there to suffer. Out of these dreadful circumstances\, a young married lieutenant is directing rehearsals of the first play ever staged in that country. With only two copies of the text\, a cast of convicts\, and a leading lady about to face the gallows\, conditions are less than ideal. Based on the extraordinary true story of Australia’s first penal colony and with deportation as punishment more relevant than ever\, Our Country’s Good asks if it may be possible to combat dehumanization with the power of theater. \nRandall Theater @ 2020 N. 13th St\, Philadelphia\, PA.
