SUMMARY:Transcribing The Revolutionary City
DESCRIPTION:Join the APS on February 26 at 6:00 p.m. as we transcribe the stories of Philadelphians during the American Revolution. SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Medieval Sex
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Medieval Sex\,” a look at the reality of medieval sex and sexuality through the lens of comic literature\, satire\, and obscenity\, with Larissa “Kat” Tracy\, professor of medieval literature and author of several books on the Middle Ages. \nCome to the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown for a fascinating\, rollicking look at how medieval people navigated sex in their time. \nThe speaker\, Professor Kat Tracy\, has appeared on Wondrium’s series Sex in the Middle Ages and the History Channel’s Dark Marvels\, and has previously given excellent Profs and Pints talks on medieval torture and the pagan origins of late winter holidays. \nThis time out\, Professor Tracy discusses how the sex lives of medieval people were framed by religious edicts and secular laws\, how they skirted those restrictions\, and found outlets in sexual humor and displays. \nMedieval discussions of sex were most common in humorous literature that used satire\, double entendres\, obscenity\, and dirty jokes\, often to engage in political commentary or draw attention to bigger social issues. We’ll look at how great writers of that time found ways to discuss sex while escaping censure from the Catholic Church\, and we’ll tackle the question of whether medieval society truly was more prudish than our own. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 4 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: An illustration by Giovannino de’ Grassi from the late 1300s.

SUMMARY:Temple Theaters Presents: OUR COUNTRY'S GOOD
DESCRIPTION:Our Country’s Good \nBy Timberlake Wertenbaker \nDirected by Taylor Harlow \nFebruary 21st\, 22nd\, 23rd. \nAustralia in 1789 is a hellish hole for English prisoners brought there to suffer. Out of these dreadful circumstances\, a young married lieutenant is directing rehearsals of the first play ever staged in that country. With only two copies of the text\, a cast of convicts\, and a leading lady about to face the gallows\, conditions are less than ideal. Based on the extraordinary true story of Australia’s first penal colony and with deportation as punishment more relevant than ever\, Our Country’s Good asks if it may be possible to combat dehumanization with the power of theater. \nRandall Theater @ 2020 N. 13th St\, Philadelphia\, PA.

SUMMARY:Conquistawhore
DESCRIPTION:Conquistawhore \nwritten & performed by Rachel O’Hanlon Rodriguez \nFeaturing live music played by Chris Sannino\, Emily Schuman\, and Evan Raines. \nDirected by Cat Ramirez with artistic support provided by Die-Cast. \nLegend has it The Conquistawhore drinks her weight in whiskey\, brawls her own vagina (because he makes terrible decisions)\, and roams the Wild West – or is that the Main Line? Their trials weave a story of manifest destiny – a calling to take the land back\, one cis-white man at a time. But they discover it’s hard to move forward if you’re stuck in the past. This bawdy and poetic solo show takes audiences on a ride where cultural wounds become personal afflictions and where vaginas can grow up to be cowboys. \nFebruary 21- Friday – 7pm \nFebruary 22 – Saturday – 9pm \nVENUE \nPlays & Players Theatre (3rd floor\, no elevator) \n1714 Delancey St. \nPhiladelphia\, PA 19103 \n“The show tackles a great deal of emotional thoughts and stories\, focusing around gender and sex/sexuality. SUMMARY:Mother Archive: Reading and Conversation with Erika Morillo and Irit Reinheimer
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Head and The Hand on February 20 at 7-8pm for a reading and conversation about Mother Archive\, the debut image-text memoir by writer and photographer Erika Morillo. Erika will be in conversation with Philly-based artist and writer Irit Reinheimer\, discussing the use of photography to understand mothering\, memory\, and identity in the context of the Dominican-American immigrant experience. Signed copies of the book will be available. \nBook Synopsis\nA family murder kept secret\, the mysterious disappearance of her father\, the systematic erasing of family photographs\, a turbulent relationship with her mother\, layers of trauma and abuse. In Mother Archive\, Erika Morillo reconciles these demons of her past by searching for and seeking out the roots of her family. Intertwining memories with archival family photographs\, news clippings\, film stills\, and artistic images\, Morillo revisits her childhood growing up in the Dominican Republic\, a place and time riddled with a history of violence and a tradition of erasure. \nSpanning three generations across three different countries\, this memoir works as a map in which the author traces incidents in her family history to help her understand herself and her own experience as a mother. \nErika Morillo\nErika Morillo is a writer and photographer born and raised in the Dominican Republic and based in Jersey City. Her work focuses on family narratives\, identity\, and the possibilities of image-text publications. Her photographs have been published and exhibited nationally and internationally and her photobooks are in the collections at the Whitney Museum of American Art Library and The International Center of Photography Library. She holds an MA in sociology from The New School for Social Research and an MFA from Image Text Ithaca. \nIrit Reinheimer\nIrit Reinheimer is an artist and writer based in Philadelphia. Irit’s films\, Young\, Jewish and Left\, How the Bridge Works\, I Told Her This Was Home\, and Of Origin\, have screened nationally and internationally. Push the Water is her first book and one of several pieces she worked on as a student at the Image Text MFA program at Ithaca College. Beyond her artistic practices\, Irit has worked for over a decade in communications for community-based projects and organizations focused on social change. She is also a long-time member of Jewish Voice for Peace.
