SUMMARY:Re-Framing the Self Portrait
DESCRIPTION:This engaging workshop begins with a talk by Sarah R. Bloom who will share insights into their motivations and methods for creating self-portraits. As they speak\, participants can begin working on collages inspired by the discussion. \nThe creative process starts with a selfie or an instant camera self-portrait\, which participants will use as the foundation for their artwork. A variety of art supplies\, including magazines\, colored paper\, scissors\, colored pencils\, and markers\, will be provided to enhance and transform these images. March 8th is International Women’s Day and resources will be provided from their website (https://www.internationalwomensday.com/Resources) \nThroughout the workshop\, participants will be encouraged to reflect on and redefine the narratives surrounding their self-images. They’ll explore questions about personal identity\, societal perceptions\, and how they choose to represent themselves through art. \nAbout the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance and Sarah R. Bloom are proud to present “The Female Gaze\,” a juried exhibition dedicated to self-portraits by female-identifying artists from diverse backgrounds\, cultures and ages. Juried by renowned Philadelphia artists\, Chelsey Luster and Lauren Rinaldi\, the exhibition challenges traditional representations of women and redefines the concept of the gaze in art. SUMMARY:The Museum for Art in Wood presents Gallery Talk for “The Longest Distance between Two Points” with Katie Hudnall
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum for Art in Wood for an in-depth conversation with artist Katie Hudnall for her current exhibition “The Longest Distance between Two Points.” Hudnall makes tools\, furniture\, and objects that are perfectly suited for a peculiar world. The first museum-organized solo presentation of Hudnall’s unique and captivating work reveals a rare glimpse into the artist’s rich inner world. Here\, the absurd and mechanically improbable merge with fine woodworking and salvaged wood materials to bring mechanisms and structures to life and action.

SUMMARY:The Ultimate Turntable Clinic: Unlock Your Vinyl's Full Potential
DESCRIPTION:Open to all\, this free workshop will be held at 11am and repeated again at 2pm. \nThe Ultimate Turntable Clinic: Unlock Your Vinyl’s Full Potential \nFor our fellow vinyl enthusiasts\, we’re hosting the ultimate turntable clinic —an immersive workshop dedicated to maximizing your record playback experience. Joined by special guests from the award-winning hi-fi brand Pro-Ject\, we’ll break down the key components of your turntable system and explore the fine-tuning techniques that make all the difference in sound quality. \nFrom the plinth and motor to the bearing\, platter\, tonearm\, phono cartridge\, and preamp—we’ll discuss how each component contributes to performance\, and you’ll learn how to optimize your existing setup\, reduce unwanted vibrations and resonance\, and determine the right time for strategic upgrades. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to fine-tune your setup\, experience side-by-side system comparisons\, and gain expert knowledge on achieving the best possible sound from your vinyl collection. \n1. Turntable Shootout: Hear the Difference \nWhat’s holding the music in your record collection hostage—the cartridge\, the turntable\, or both? \nThrough an A/B shootout between two different turntable setups\, you’ll experience firsthand the dramatic impact that turntable quality and cartridge selection have on your listening experience. We’ll also compare a system in single-ended (RCA) vs. True Balanced (XLR) configurations to demonstrate how different setups affect sound clarity and depth. \n2. Live Q&A with Analog Experts \nHave questions about belt-drive vs. direct-drive turntables? Need help choosing the right cartridge? Want expert advice on getting the most out of your phono preamp? \nWe’re bringing in Robert Bruce\, an industry veteran with over 40 years of experience setting up some of the world’s finest analog systems along with our own turntable experts. Feel free to bring your questions—or even your turntable—for personalized insights. \n3. Record Care 101: A clean record is a happy record. \nFor the second half of our workshop\, we’ll walk you through the best practices of caring for your vinyl and gear. From brushes to vacuums\, to stylus care and more. The right maintenance will not only ensure you’re getting the best sound out of your turntable and records\, but it will substantially prolong the longevity of your gear and vinyl collection. We’ll cover: \n– Best practices for record cleaning and storage \n– Stylus maintenance and care \n– The importance of proper turntable setup and alignment \n– Recommended tools like brushes\, vacuums\, and anti-static solutions

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: An Introduction to Irish
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “An Introduction to Irish\,” on a resurgent language and the basics of using it\, with Mike Malloy\, Irish Language instructor at Villanova University. \nGear up for Saint Patrick’s Day by taking a whirlwind tour of the Irish language and how to use it with Mike Malloy\, an instructor for Irish at Villanova University and a regular teacher for the Irish language organization Daltaí na Gaeilge. \nHe’ll talk about where the Irish language comes from\, whether it is properly called “Gaelic\,” and how to pronounce Irish words and names. You’ll learn some basic Irish words and phrases and how to read Irish road signs. \nYou’ll also gain a knowledge of the language’s place in Ireland’s history and society. You’ll learn how it has been revived and has changed in the process\, and how it compares to other languages\, including Latin and Yiddish\, once thought to be “dead” or in decline. \nIn the 1840s\, on the eve of the Great Famine\, there were between three and four million speakers of the Irish language in Ireland. Today\, that number is closer to 70\,000\, but Irish has gone from being a language with few books\, low literacy\, and low social status to becoming a recognized and supported language in Ireland\, the United Kingdom\, and the European Union. It has its own television channels\, radio stations\, and newspapers\, as well as a vast literature of original works and translations\, and schools that use the Irish language to teach students are experiencing meteoric growth. \nWe’ll examine what makes Irish unusual among western European languages\, and you might end up unusual among other celebrants of Saint Patrick’s Day in terms of how easily choice Irish words roll off your tongue. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A road sign in Ireland. SUMMARY:Shayne Terry Presents Leave: A Postpartum Account\, with Jiordan Castle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Philadelphia launch of Shayne Terry’s Leave: A Postpartum Account\, out now from Autofocus Books. Shayne will be in conversation with Jiordan Castle\, author of Disappearing Act. The two will discuss their books\, the craft of writing about real people\, and resisting the conventions of traditional memoir. Literary friendship will be abundant and refreshments will be served. \nAbout the book: Shayne Terry’s fourth trimester is not going as planned. Instead of bonding with her new baby\, she’s stuck on the couch with a third-degree tear\, barely able to walk. When the women in her family show up to help\, they come bearing family secrets and old wounds that also need repair. Begun as notes on Terry’s phone documenting a parental leave gone awry\, Leave examines a healing process complicated by capitalism\, intergenerational trauma\, and a healthcare system with a long history of devaluing women. This powerful postpartum account treats birth as a portal\, one that can connect us to a lineage of pain\, joy\, death\, and life. And at a time when our bodily autonomy is being stripped away\, Leave is an urgent exploration of one woman’s experience recovering from birth in America. \nA Chicago Review of Books Most Anticipated Book of 2025 \n“I want to give this to every woman I know.” — Lindsay Hunter\, author of \nShayne Terry’s work has appeared in Catapult\, Chicago Review of Books\, CRAFT\, Electric Literature\, TriQuarterly\, Vol. 1 Brooklyn\, and elsewhere. She has been selected for workshops and residencies at Bread Loaf\, CRIT\, Tin House\, and the Vermont Studio Center\, and her story The Rock Is Not a Rock was included as a distinguished story of 2024 in Best American Short Stories. She lives in Brooklyn. \nJiordan Castle is the author of Disappearing Act\, a memoir in verse. Her poetry and prose appear in The New Yorker\, The Millions\, HuffPost\, The Rumpus\, and elsewhere\, including the anthologies Best New Poets and What My Father and I Don’t Talk About. Originally from New York\, she has a BA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and an MFA in Poetry from Hunter College. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and their dog.

SUMMARY:Public Archaeology at Newlin Grist Mill
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nExcavations this season are planned for the Trimble farm complex in the Historic Area. The Trimble family built their house on the property adjoining the Mill in 1739 and\, over time\, built a whole complex of structures to support the operations of their household and farm. By conducting archaeological studies in the area around the Trimble House\, the Newlin Grist Mill staff hopes to learn more about the people who lived and worked there in the 18th\, 19th\, and early 20th centuries. \nScheduled 2025 Public Archaeology Days:\nMarch 15\nApril 19\nMay 17\nJune 21\nJuly 19\nOctober 18 – International Archaeology Day \n10am-3pm. Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend.

SUMMARY:The Kahlo Quartet: Quartets Then and Now in West Philly
DESCRIPTION:Artcinia favorite\, The Kahlo Quartet\, is back! Known for their mission to bridge the classical canon with Latin American music\, The Kahlo Quartet creates performances that celebrate both tradition and innovation. This program takes listeners on a rich musical journey\, showcasing works from the Classical period to contemporary compositions\, with a special nod to Latin American influences. You will hear music by Mozart\, Beethoven\, Caroline Shaw\, and Jessie Montgomery. \nAudrey Lee\, violin \nManuela Isabel Romero Gonzalez\, violin \nFreddy Contreras\, viola \nAndrea Beltran Landers\, cello \nAbout Kahlo Quartet: \nThe Kahlo Quartet began its journey around a shared vision that everyone should have access to meaningful musical experiences\, and a shared mission to create a bridge between the typical classical canon and Latin American music. Now based in Philadelphia\, the Kahlo members work regularly with community partners in pursuit of these core values. For the Kahlo Quartet\, success is measured by audience connection and community impact. \nMembers Audrey Lee (United States)\, Manuela Romero (Cuba)\, Freddy Contreras (Venezuela)\, and Andrea Beltran Landers (Peru) are eager to explore the chamber music repertoire from their respective cultural backgrounds. Because storytelling through music is a living and changing art form\, the Kahlo String Quartet actively seeks collaborations with composers around the world
