SUMMARY:First Friday March 7th @ Arch Enemy Arts
DESCRIPTION:Folks are always asking how we find our artists. There’s so much new and emerging talent today\, its hard to keep track of everything. That’s why we take tremendous pride in being one of the few of our peer galleries to host one open call each year\, inviting artists who have never shown with AEA to submit their work for review. \nThis year\, the ‘2025 Spotlight Showcase’ will debut on First Friday\, March 7th and feature thirty-one new (to us) artists selected from a pool of nearly 600 applicants. It is an opportunity for collectors to support truly emerging talent because\, when an open call artist hits\, it can truly make their career. To that end\, alongside the exhibition we are featuring a new solo show by Vasilisa Romanenko\, an artist who came to us through the annual open call and has since hosted three sold out solos since 2022. \nAlso on view for First Friday\, March 7th is Gerlanda di Francia’s gorgeous feature\, ‘Dear Monsters\,’ and the sixth installment of ‘With Love\, Your Biggest Fan’\, a group exhibition of twenty-six artists\, who were invited to create work as a love letter to their most beloved movies\, shows\, and characters. \nWe hope you will join us!

SUMMARY:No father–no frontier Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:12Gates is honored to present No Father–No Frontier\, a two-person show curated by Protyasha Pandey and featuring work by Humaira Abid and Aiza Ahmed. Join us for the opening reception of No Father–No Frontier on Friday\, March 7th\, from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. \nNo Father–No Frontier is an examination of the relationship between family and state\, and their subversions by the female gaze in exile. All three of us\, removed from our points of origin\, in the tout-monde–the West is in us\, we are in the West. Displacement affords us the luxury of viewing distance. Drawing on the feminist argument for family abolition\, Humaira Abid and Aiza Ahmed deliver critiques of paterfamilial regimes\, and lay claim to personhood made outside of the established paradigms of lineage and citizenship. \nTo the infant\, Gender is the first instrument of abstraction. Home\, follows as a first threshold; and family\, the first line-of-control. To the artist\, family is formidable emotional terrain—the possibilities for kinship\, love and care sit alongside the possibility of despotism\, pain and violence\, subject to an unpredictable lottery. Poised against society\, state and capital\, She continues to be at once in need of the meagre protections of family and yet marginalised by its legacies and prescriptions.

SUMMARY:Ink Paint: a new musical about the first “girl artists” at the Walt Disney Animation Studios
DESCRIPTION:Pier Players Theatre Company will present the Philadelphia premiere of Ink & Paint at The Media Theatre. This is an original musical by Danielle E. Moore\, running from March 7-9\, 2025\, in the Crystal Room at the Media Theatre. This semi-staged production is produced by Chelsea Cylinder\, Artistic Director of Pier Players. Christian Ryan\, Artistic Director of the Media Theatre is very excited to host Pier Players Theatre Company for this event. \nCreated by Danielle E. Moore\, Ink & Paint is a new historical musical that follows the first women animators at Walt Disney Studios in the 1930s and 1940s—the studio’s first “girl artists.” As they navigate a male-dominated industry in the shadow of global conflict and labor uprising\, these four women show the impact of their art and the strength of friendship. \nInk & Paint is presented as part of Media Theatre’s Story Series – a new initiative to bring new\, untold\, and/or distinctive stories into the Media Theatre’s space—from world premiere plays to contemporary musicals and more. \nSet in the golden age of hand-drawn animation\, the wild\, wisecracking women of Ink & Paint fight tooth\, nail\, and paintbrush for their place in history. But to this day\, they are seldom recognized for their work. Through a fantastic\, fully original score and insightfully written scenes full of laughter and heartbreak\, Ink & Paint unlocks a truth about a studio that we all know and love. And\, the musical is being presented just in time for Women’s History Month.

SUMMARY:Re-Framing the Self Portrait
DESCRIPTION:This engaging workshop begins with a talk by Sarah R. Bloom who will share insights into their motivations and methods for creating self-portraits. As they speak\, participants can begin working on collages inspired by the discussion. \nThe creative process starts with a selfie or an instant camera self-portrait\, which participants will use as the foundation for their artwork. A variety of art supplies\, including magazines\, colored paper\, scissors\, colored pencils\, and markers\, will be provided to enhance and transform these images. March 8th is International Women’s Day and resources will be provided from their website (https://www.internationalwomensday.com/Resources) \nThroughout the workshop\, participants will be encouraged to reflect on and redefine the narratives surrounding their self-images. They’ll explore questions about personal identity\, societal perceptions\, and how they choose to represent themselves through art. \nAbout the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance and Sarah R. Bloom are proud to present “The Female Gaze\,” a juried exhibition dedicated to self-portraits by female-identifying artists from diverse backgrounds\, cultures and ages. Juried by renowned Philadelphia artists\, Chelsey Luster and Lauren Rinaldi\, the exhibition challenges traditional representations of women and redefines the concept of the gaze in art.
