SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Words That Summoned Vampires
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Words That Summoned Vampires\,” on the literary origins of Dracula and other fanged fiends\, with Curt Herr\, professor of Victorian\, Gothic\, and Queer literature at Kutztown University and former editor of The Journal of Dracula Studies. \nBefore Nosferatu there was Dracula\, and before Dracula there was Varney. \nYes\, Varney. And who the heck was Varney\, you might ask? \nCome to Philadelphia’s Black Squirrel Club to excavate the forgotten vampires that gave rise to familiar ones with Curt Herr\, who has taught courses on vampire literature at Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum and focuses his Gothic literature classes at Kutztown University on vampire themes. \nWe’ll go back in time to Varney’s 1845 rise in the literary phenomenon that was Victorian Street Fiction and published stories known as “Penny Dreadfuls.” The first ‘disposable’ forms of literature written for the newly literate working class\, such stories were published in newspapers\, cost pennies to purchase\, and were meant to be read quickly and tossed away. Their authors were hack writers focused on crime\, monsters\, insanity\, and murder\, and the tales they produced featured buckets of blood. \nWithin this genre\, Varney the Vampire (or The Feast of Blood) began serialization in British newspapers in 1845. Wildly popular\, it ran for a whopping three years and compiled into the first vampire novel in the history of English literature. Its lead character\, Sir Francis Varney\, influenced everyone from Bram Stoker—who heavily borrowed some of Varney’s exploits for his own novel\, Dracula—to the writers of TV’s vampire soap opera\, Dark Shadows. \nDr. Herr will discuss how Sir Francis Varney could be called Dracula’s vampiric grandfather in theme\, influence\, and style. He’ll also explore the erotic nature of the vampire’s bite and trace its changing tone from animalistic feeding to erotically charged seductions. \nYou’ll learn how Stoker’s novel was transgressive on many levels\, exploring the rise of the “New Woman” and feminism while conversely creating monstrous mothers who consume their young. It explored the homoerotic nature of the vampire\, which Anne Rice capitalized in her Vampire Chronicles and which was later explored in True Blood. \nYou’ll emerge from the talk perhaps knowing enough about vampires’ lineage to keep one listening until the sun comes up. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: From the cover of one of the original 1845 versions of Varney the Vampire. (Tint added.)

SUMMARY:The Clay Studio presents Clay & Conversation: Liisa Nelson
DESCRIPTION:The Clay Studio presents Clay & Conversations\, an exciting series of informal conversations and get – with ceramic artists\, curators\, scholars\, and friends together. On February 21\, join Philadelphia-based ceramic artist Liisa Nelson to learn about her new exhibition Dreams. The exhibition comprises a series of sculptures\, furniture\, and wall tile pieces exploring human longing through the myths and spirits of the past\, blending them with symbols of the digital age and late capitalism. The collection questions how our hopes and dreams are shaped in an increasingly consumer-driven world and how power structures capitalize on our deepest desires.\nBorn and raised in Montana\, the wildness of nature and the quietude of mountains is in Liisa Nelson’s blood. In 2020\, Nelson founded Theorii Contemporary Art Space\, an experimental gallery that is currently transitioning from brick-and-mortar to a digital and pop-up-based project. Participants can register for the discussion on Zoom.

We are not yet wheelchair accessible; Da Vinci is a three floor gallery with narrow staircases. (We are working towards becoming ADA accessible by 2027!) It is 5 steps up to the first floor level\, and 14 steps from the first to second floor\, where the gender-neutral bathroom is located. Da Vinci has masks and COVID tests available at our events. We can reserve seats for low-vision and Deaf and HoH community members as needed. DVAA exhibitions are free to visit and all of our programs are free or suggested donation. If food is being served at the event you are coming to\, please reach out to us about dietary restrictions. For information\, or to notify our team members of any needs prior to your visit\, please contact info@davinciartalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Art Star CRAP Bazaar
DESCRIPTION:Short version:\nAn Art & Craft Rummage Sale + Fundraiser \nAll items at LEAST 50% Off the original price \n25% of all Crap Bazaar sales will go to the Sunday Love Project & World Central Kitchen \nWe will also be collecting items to donate to No More Secrets \nLong Version: \nThis yearly fundraising event is a funny take on our Art Star CRAFT Bazaar\, though it will be nothing like that event. Over 20 of our regular crafters will be selling off their “Seconds” at huge discounts. There will be no fancy booth displays and no frills! Just a bunch of big tables piled with stuff to rummage through! \nThe crap bazaar aims to support our artists by helping them make some income off of time spent learning and playing – an important part of the artistic process. Many of the items included in the “crap” bazaar are just that – pieces that were made as practice before the piece is perfected and placed on shop shelves and sold at craft shows. Other items are overstock\, samples\, or have been discontinued from their retail lines to make room for fresh\, new work. Some may be mishaps\, that have little cracks\, chips\, or other imperfections. Find a handmade Treasure at A GREAT PRICE. Items will be marked down AT LEAST 50% off retail prices. \nAnother mission of the Crap Bazaar is to give back to our community. Each year we donate 25% of the total sales from the event to two Non-Profits. This year we have chosen World Central Kitchen and The Sunday Love Project. The donation will be split between these two evenly. \nWorld Central Kitchen is first to the frontlines\, providing fresh meals in response to humanitarian\, climate\, and community crises. Learn more HERE. \nThe mission of The Sunday LOVE Project is to share food amongst those experiencing food insecurity in our community. Our efforts aim to ease the burden of choosing between paying bills and feeding our families. For the last seven years\, we have focused on serving those experiencing homelessness. Recently through Greater Goods\, our free grocery store\, we have shifted gears to ensure parents are able to feed their children. We are a liaison between a hungry\, struggling mind and a focused\, nourished soul. Learn More HERE. . \nWe are also encouraging customers to drop off donations for us to collect and give to No More Secrets (the nation’s 1st Menstrual Hub and Uterine Wellness Center.) Requested items: Menstrual Pads\, Tampons\, Panty Liners\, Baby Wipes or Flushable Wipes (not makeup removers or anti-bacterial wipes)\, Soap Bars\, Deodorant\, Shampoo & Conditioner\, Body Wash\, Underwear/Bras\, Razers\, Menstrual Cups. All should be new/unused and unopened and in original packaging. No loose tampons/pads. \nThe “Crap” bazaar occurs only once a year\, so don’t miss out on a chance to purchase original\, handmade goods at great prices.
