SUMMARY:Free Art Show- Rebecca Schultz- Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:For the month of September on view are works by Rebecca Schultz. Her showcase\, Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond explores in colorful depth the compositions under our feet and looming alongside us\, the local rock formations we overlook. There she finds poetry and history in recesses and outreaches. A beautiful statement is found through the fluidity of paint to represent the rigid structure of geology. In taking such a close examination of the quite strength we take for granted yet depend so much on\, Schultz asks us to appreciate the subtleties and learn more about ourselves. \nStop in the gallery 4 days a week to view and add to your collection. All works are also available for sale online through our site www.blackmothgallery.com. You will not want to miss out on experiencing these one of a kind works in person. \n10% of all proceeds will go to Friends of the Earth

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Magic Gardens presents ‘Lost Landscapes: The ‘Skin of the Bride’ mural by Isaiah Zagar’
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens unveils Lost Landscapes: The ‘Skin of the Bride’ mural by Isaiah Zagar\, a new exhibition that serves as both a tribute to Isaiah Zagar’s “Skin of the Bride” mural and an archive of the community’s attempt to protect his remarkable contribution to public art. It offers a poignant look at the process of trying to save a significant cultural artifact while looking back in time at Zagar’s creation of the lost masterpiece.\nArtist Isaiah Zagar’s mural “The Skin of the Bride” adorned the walls of the former Painted Bride Art Center and is a testament to his intricate and imaginative artistic vision. Completed in the 1990s\, the 7\,000-square-foot mosaic reflects Zagar’s signature style with its vibrant and eclectic use of materials. When the Painted Bride Art Center placed the building up for sale in 2017\, the Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens team fought tirelessly for five years in attempts to protect the mural but were ultimately unsuccessful. When the mural faced demolition in 2023\, the PMG preservation team worked diligently to salvage the unique tiles and components that made up the artwork featured in ‘Lost Landscapes.’

SUMMARY:Carrying On: Black Panther Party Artists Continue the Legacy
DESCRIPTION:GLASSBORO\, NJ—Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is excited to announce Carrying On: Black Panther Party Artists Continue the Legacy\, a new exhibition celebrating the works of former Black Panther Party artists: Gayle Asali Dickson\, Emory Douglas\, Malik Edwards\, and Akinsanya Kambon. Curated by Colette Gaiter\, Carrying On… showcases the legacy and current work of these cultural pioneers together for the first time to honor their lifelong commitments to people\, justice\, liberation\, and the freedom to express their creative visions. This exhibition will be on view from January 27 to March 15\, 2025. In celebration of Black History Month\, a panel discussion with the artists and curator will take place on Saturday\, February 8 from 3-4 pm\, followed by an opening reception from 4-6 pm. \nThese four artists were teenagers and young adults when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended legal segregation and discrimination in the United States. They grew up in the Jim Crow era\, restricted by laws and practices that affected every aspect of their lives and severely limited opportunities to pursue their dreams. Through talent\, perseverance\, and serendipity\, they became and remain artists. \nThe Black Panther Party and The Black Panther newspaper are the common denominators unifying their early artistic careers. As Curator Colette Gaiter explains\, “Carrying On… brings together four artists who participated in a radical justice experiment that resonates today over half a century later. Emory Douglas joined the Black Panther Party (BPP) in 1967 and practiced the Party’s mantra\, “Each one teach one.” He later worked with Gayle Asali Dickson\, Malik Edwards\, and Akinsanya Kambon at various times on The Black Panther newspaper in the early 1970s. Edwards and Kambon joined the BPP after serving in Vietnam. Like Dickson and Douglas\, they saw a way to work for liberation. The artists’ early work (made during the late 1960s- early 1970s global social movements and uprisings against oppression of all kinds) alongside their later and current work reveals personal and artistic evolutions. Dickson and Edwards use spiritual elements in their art just as they did in their lives to transcend oppression and bring others along with them. Douglas and Kambon connect with ancestors for the same purpose. Various media and work styles represent the artists’ need to increase their expressive range and expand their thinking. From the beginning\, each artist used their talents and insights to visualize a radical future and motivate others to imagine beyond their current conditions. Their work helped make lasting changes in the world. Carrying on the BPP’s teachings\, all four artists still work with communities\, telling visual stories that sustain a steady movement toward liberation for everyone.” \nIn the decades following their work at The Black Panther newspaper\, each artist has expanded their ways of using figures to represent realities and communicate aspirational ideas. Carrying On… will feature drawings\, paintings\, clay sculptures\, graphic design\, digital prints\, and images generated from Artificial Intelligence (AI) prompts. The juxtaposition of viewing the artists’ early work next to their later and current work will also offer insight into the artists’ perspectives on social progress and change\, while celebrating their dedication to the belief that art motivates and inspires people to work for their own liberation.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Words That Summoned Vampires
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Words That Summoned Vampires\,” on the literary origins of Dracula and other fanged fiends\, with Curt Herr\, professor of Victorian\, Gothic\, and Queer literature at Kutztown University and former editor of The Journal of Dracula Studies. \nBefore Nosferatu there was Dracula\, and before Dracula there was Varney. \nYes\, Varney. And who the heck was Varney\, you might ask? \nCome to Philadelphia’s Black Squirrel Club to excavate the forgotten vampires that gave rise to familiar ones with Curt Herr\, who has taught courses on vampire literature at Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum and focuses his Gothic literature classes at Kutztown University on vampire themes. \nWe’ll go back in time to Varney’s 1845 rise in the literary phenomenon that was Victorian Street Fiction and published stories known as “Penny Dreadfuls.” The first ‘disposable’ forms of literature written for the newly literate working class\, such stories were published in newspapers\, cost pennies to purchase\, and were meant to be read quickly and tossed away. Their authors were hack writers focused on crime\, monsters\, insanity\, and murder\, and the tales they produced featured buckets of blood. \nWithin this genre\, Varney the Vampire (or The Feast of Blood) began serialization in British newspapers in 1845. Wildly popular\, it ran for a whopping three years and compiled into the first vampire novel in the history of English literature. Its lead character\, Sir Francis Varney\, influenced everyone from Bram Stoker—who heavily borrowed some of Varney’s exploits for his own novel\, Dracula—to the writers of TV’s vampire soap opera\, Dark Shadows. \nDr. Herr will discuss how Sir Francis Varney could be called Dracula’s vampiric grandfather in theme\, influence\, and style. He’ll also explore the erotic nature of the vampire’s bite and trace its changing tone from animalistic feeding to erotically charged seductions. \nYou’ll learn how Stoker’s novel was transgressive on many levels\, exploring the rise of the “New Woman” and feminism while conversely creating monstrous mothers who consume their young. It explored the homoerotic nature of the vampire\, which Anne Rice capitalized in her Vampire Chronicles and which was later explored in True Blood. \nYou’ll emerge from the talk perhaps knowing enough about vampires’ lineage to keep one listening until the sun comes up. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: From the cover of one of the original 1845 versions of Varney the Vampire. (Tint added.)

SUMMARY:"The Sisters" - A New Chamber Opera About Female Poets Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Liberty City Arts presents the workshop premiere of “The Sisters\,” a new chamber opera by Patricia Wallinga that imagines a dreamlike conversation between four pioneering women poets across time. The performance will take place on Friday\, January 31st\, 2025 at 7:00 PM at the Latvian Society\, 531 N 7th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA. Admission is by suggested donation of $20 per person. \nSet in an early twentieth-century study\, the opera follows poet Amy Lowell as she conjures visions of her literary forebears: Sappho\, Elizabeth Barrett Browning\, and Emily Dickinson. Through a series of intimate conversations and musical exchanges\, these revolutionary women explore their shared experiences as female writers and their unique approaches to art and expression. \nThe piece weaves together texts from all four poets\, creating a tapestry of voices that spans centuries. “These poets form a chain we follow through the opera\, each looking back towards the others\,” says composer Patricia Wallinga. “Browning read Sappho\, Dickinson adored Browning’s work\, and Lowell looked to all of them for inspiration. In this opera\, they finally get to speak back to each other.” \nWith this project\, Liberty City Arts aims to highlight the often-overlooked lineage of women’s artistic creation and the importance of creative sisterhood. “At times\, it feels unbearably lonely to face the male-dominated world of composition\,” Wallinga notes. “I draw strength from my female predecessors\, just as Amy Lowell did. This opera is about finding your artistic family across time.” \nThe opera features an all-female cast and creative team\, bringing together local Philadelphia artists in a celebration of feminine creativity past and present. The intimate workshop setting will allow audiences to experience this new work in its developmental stage and participate in its evolution ahead of the world premiere of the piece on June 13\, 2025. \n— The Sisters – Workshop Performance Friday\, January 31st\, 2025 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM The Latvian Society 531 N 7th Street Philadelphia\, PA Suggested Donation: $20/person Tickets: https://libertycityarts.org/events/the-sisters-workshop/ or https://bit.ly/lcasisters \nVenue Information: \nStreet parking available \nPlease note: Theatre access requires climbing stairs \nBar service available; drinks permitted during performance \n— About Liberty City Arts Liberty City Arts is a community-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization enriching Philadelphia’s vibrant arts landscape.
