SUMMARY:"The Sisters" - A New Chamber Opera About Female Poets Through Time
DESCRIPTION:Liberty City Arts presents the workshop premiere of “The Sisters\,” a new chamber opera by Patricia Wallinga that imagines a dreamlike conversation between four pioneering women poets across time. The performance will take place on Friday\, January 31st\, 2025 at 7:00 PM at the Latvian Society\, 531 N 7th Street\, Philadelphia\, PA. Admission is by suggested donation of $20 per person. \nSet in an early twentieth-century study\, the opera follows poet Amy Lowell as she conjures visions of her literary forebears: Sappho\, Elizabeth Barrett Browning\, and Emily Dickinson. Through a series of intimate conversations and musical exchanges\, these revolutionary women explore their shared experiences as female writers and their unique approaches to art and expression. \nThe piece weaves together texts from all four poets\, creating a tapestry of voices that spans centuries. “These poets form a chain we follow through the opera\, each looking back towards the others\,” says composer Patricia Wallinga. “Browning read Sappho\, Dickinson adored Browning’s work\, and Lowell looked to all of them for inspiration. In this opera\, they finally get to speak back to each other.” \nWith this project\, Liberty City Arts aims to highlight the often-overlooked lineage of women’s artistic creation and the importance of creative sisterhood. “At times\, it feels unbearably lonely to face the male-dominated world of composition\,” Wallinga notes. “I draw strength from my female predecessors\, just as Amy Lowell did. This opera is about finding your artistic family across time.” \nThe opera features an all-female cast and creative team\, bringing together local Philadelphia artists in a celebration of feminine creativity past and present. The intimate workshop setting will allow audiences to experience this new work in its developmental stage and participate in its evolution ahead of the world premiere of the piece on June 13\, 2025. \n— The Sisters – Workshop Performance Friday\, January 31st\, 2025 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM The Latvian Society 531 N 7th Street Philadelphia\, PA Suggested Donation: $20/person Tickets: https://libertycityarts.org/events/the-sisters-workshop/ or https://bit.ly/lcasisters \nVenue Information: \nStreet parking available \nPlease note: Theatre access requires climbing stairs \nBar service available; drinks permitted during performance \n— About Liberty City Arts Liberty City Arts is a community-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization enriching Philadelphia’s vibrant arts landscape. SUMMARY:Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with 1838 Black Metropolis\, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania presents Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers highlighting themes of Black self-determination and leadership from the 1770s onward in the abolition movement of the Mid-Atlantic region. Drawing from the Pennsylvania Abolition Society (PAS) collection and commemorating the 250th anniversary of its founding\, this compelling exhibit refocuses attention on abolition as a global Black-led political movement championed by the PAS. Through an assembly of primary source documents\, the exhibit emphasizes how family\, community\, and freedom for future generations were key drivers for Black abolitionists in the Philadelphia area and beyond. \nThe exhibit is free to the public during HSP’s operating hours\, Tuesday\, Thursday\, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free\, As One is made possible through generous support from The Haverford Trust Company and the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Endowment Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation. \nThis is not an all-day event. Please visit https://www.portal.hsp.org/hours-and-admission for more information regarding exhibit times.

SUMMARY:Free\, As One: Black Worldmaking in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society Papers Exhibit Opening Reception
\nJoin fellow history enthusiasts for an opening reception of the exhibit in partnership with the 1838 Black Metropolis. This event\, which will feature remarks from David R. Bringham\, Librarian and CEO of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, and 1838 Black Metropolis co-founders Morgan Lloyd and Michiko Quinones\, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will accompany the event.

SUMMARY:Museum for Art in Wood hosts February First Friday for ‘Mark Sfirri: La Famiglia’
DESCRIPTION:The Museum for Art in Wood welcomes Old City Visitors for February’s First Friday to explore its latest exhibition ‘Mark Sfirri: La Famigila\,’ the first museum-organized solo exhibition by celebrated artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri. The highly personal exhibition of new and never-before-seen work offers different approaches to questions of lineage\, traversal\, and the experience of belonging: biological families vs. selected families; species and identities; and familial strife and unconditional love\, support\, and dysfunction. La Famiglia represents a coming to terms with generational passing through Sfirri’s adoption of a spontaneous\, “flow state” approach in his wood turning\, carving\, and surface processes.\nIn addition to new works by Sfirri\, the exhibition features a collaborative project that includes the work of 45 artists and colleagues who were asked to contribute a two-dimensional artwork depicting an “immigrant” of their choice\, whether a person or an idea.

SUMMARY:Pop Up Studio with Yannick Lowery
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 7\, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\nJoin visual artist Yannick Lowery for a collage and cyanotype activity inspired by images of Black history and the closing of The Time Is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure. Participants will assemble cyanotype prints to create their own unique compositions. \nMaterials provided. No experience necessary\, all ages welcome. \nAbout the Artist:\nYannick Lowery is a native of New York City and currently resides in Philadelphia\, PA. Claiming both cities as cultural and creative influences\, he cites the rich diversity of their visual art histories as fuel for his own practice. Yannick attended The Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD) and Columbia College in Chicago\, where he studied sculpture and graphic design\, respectively. \nHis work explores the creations of illustrated proverbs to guide the viewers through cultural introspection and imaginative perpetuation. Lowery parallels archival imagery and his own photography to employ world-creation and compile instigative and investigative way-making devices through collage\, animation\, and sculptural works. The creative accessibility within this medium has enabled Lowery to experiment with his artistic reach: from illustrations for publications such as The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Vanity Fair\, Time Magazine as well public murals and installations across the nation. \nThis event is part of the Friday Night Lounge program series. It is free with museum admission.

SUMMARY:Live Podcast Recording: The Blerd Bar
DESCRIPTION:Multiverse has been selected to be an exhibit site for the original Sun-Man action figure. Sun-Man was created by Yla Eason in 1985. She was inspired to create the character after her son\, Menelik Puryear\, said he could not be a superhero because he was not white. Eason wanted to create a positive image for her son and other Black children\, so she made Sun-Man a Black superhero whose powers came from the melanin in his skin. The figure went on to be manufactured by Mattel. \nThe original Sun-Man action figure was originally part of the Philadelphia Doll Museum\, one of the largest collections of Black dolls as artifacts of history and culture. The museum closed the doors of its North Philadelphia location in 2020. Since then\, curator Rob Blackson has worked to place items from the collection on display in businesses and community centers throughout the city. Sun-Man will be on display at Multiverse (8026 Germantown Ave) from January 28-March 31. \nIn celebration of this action figure display\, Multiverse is teaming up with podcasters The Blerd Bar to host a live podcast recording in store on Friday\, February 7th from 6-7:30pm. Multiverse co-owner Gralin Hughes will be in conversation with The Blerd Bar hosts Dan “BigDan” Rhodan\, Joshua “J-Hawk” Hawkins\, and Richard “The Producer” Elam about Black action figures. The event\, Solar Flair: Black In Action (Figures) will be free and open to the public\, though space is limited due to the small size of the store. \nThe event will be followed by a meet and greet reception with Yla Eason\, the creator of Sun Man.

SUMMARY:Up Next! Youth Jam Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Up Next! is a free monthly open jam session providing a platform for Philly’s creative youth to learn\, perform\, collaborate\, and grow. Every second Saturday\, The Lounge at World Cafe Live offers an all-ages\, alcohol-free environment\, showcasing our city’s up-and-coming talent while building community across the local music scene. A rotating youth ensemble will serve as the house band\, kicking off the afternoon with a featured set including hand-selected guest artists before opening up the jam.\nProduced in collaboration between World Cafe Live and The School District of Philadelphia’s MIC’d Up initiative\, Up Next! aims to engage students in music industry careers both on and off the stage. Students will work alongside the WCL team to curate\, promote\, facilitate\, and document each session\, with opportunities in booking\, marketing\, videography\, photography\, artist relations\, hosting\, audio engineering\, backline management\, and other elements of live event production. A team of professional musicians and educators will also be on-site to facilitate performances. This program is supported by Save The Music Foundation.
