SUMMARY:Artist Town Hall: On Abolition & Creative Labor
DESCRIPTION:Asian Arts Initiative’s Artist Town Hall invites artists to come together to share their latest projects\, make a pitch\, and exchange resources. This iteration of the Town Hall invites BIPOC\, Palestinian\, and SWANA artists whose practice or current projects engage restorative justice and anti-oppression efforts. \nArtists that join the Town Hall will share their work alongside two invited presenters\, including the Memory Workers’ Guild (MWG) and theater director Zaina Yasmin Dana. We hope to spark conversation and collaboration of artists and culture workers across anti-apartheid\, abolition\, and restorative justice movements. \nTafari Diop (@tafaridiop) of Memory Workers’ Guild is a decentralized collective of friends\, peers\, and community members dedicated to the preservation\, restoration\, and production of Black cultural legacies\, experiences\, and memories. \nZaina Yasmin Dana (@zainaydana) is a Palestinian Philadelphia-based director striving to create restorative and justice-seeking art (classical\, devised\, and contemporary!) to promote radical love and acceptance at the individual and community level.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: A Nation That Almost Wasn't
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “A Nation That Almost Wasn’t\,” on how colonialists’ formation of the United States was anything but a foregone conclusion but happened anyway\, with Jessica Choppin Roney\, associate professor of history at Temple University\, director of the Program in Early American Economy and Society at the Library Company of Philadelphia\, and author of Governed by a Spirit of Opposition: The Origins of American Political Practice in Colonial Philadelphia. \nAt a time of deep political polarization and disagreement over the fundamental nature and direction of our nation\, it’s worthwhile to revisit the early history of the United States to see how it resolved the big questions faced in the course of its formation. \nWe forget now—but Americans back then then were fully aware—that the shape and composition of the still lower-case “united states” was once very much unresolved. The American Revolution played out as both a crisis of empire and a crisis of democracy\, and once the thirteen colonies declared independence from Britain it was not at all clear whether the English-speaking people in North America were now one nation\, thirteen\, or many more. \nIn essence\, early Americans grappled with a question that we ourselves still struggle to answer: What makes us “one people\,” as the Declaration of Independence asserted we are? \nAs settlers moved farther west\, it was unclear what was to keep them from breaking away entirely and forming their own states that they could control. Was Vermont going to be a state? Kentucky? Ohio? Who got to decide? \nMany of the people in those places declared themselves to be outside the control of eastern state capitals and able to use the same principle of self-determination in the Declaration to say\, “We\, too\, can declare our independence.” Whether that was true\, why or why not\, and what either conclusion meant for the future of a democratic republic was at the heart of the constitutional crisis of the 1780s. \nThis talk frames the origins of the US Constitution as a response to the revolution “out of bounds.” Professor Roney will discuss how the founding generation resolved the tension between the right to self-determination and the desire to create one\, large\, unified nation. She’ll look at work that the Constitution did to meet this end and how did it fell short. And she’ll talk about what the choices made by the founders then mean for us now. \nThe mechanisms the founders used to foster unity across time and space matter as we think about bridging divisions today. This talk will leave you thinking at a more profound level about what it means to be a citizen of the United States. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A map of the Thirteen Colonies and nearby colonial areas just before the Revolutionary War. From the 1923 book Historical Atlas\, by William R. Shepherd.

SUMMARY:Basics of Drawing: Figure Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to “Figure It Out: Basics of Figure Drawing\,” your four-session workshop into the wonderful world of visual art! Whether you can barely draw a stick figure or you’re already doodling masterpieces\, this class is designed to empower you to capture the human form with flair and confidence. \nIn the first session\, we’ll break the ice with some basic anatomy and proportions—think of it as a crash course in seeing the human body like never before. We’ll explore simple shapes and lines to get the ball rolling. By the end\, you’ll be sketching figures that look like people. \nSessions 2 – 4 will combine learning techniques\, such as movement\, gesture\, shading\, and texture\, with a figure model. SUMMARY:[untitled] film series: Persona with Tshay
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, November 20th at 6 PM for a screening of Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 film\, Persona\, followed by a discussion with Tshay. An enigmatic and frequently studied film\, Persona presents questions of domestic relations\, psychology\, and the uncanny\, similarly explored in the exhibition Joanna Piotrowksa: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies. This is the third and final of three parts in the [untitled] film series\, which aims to deepen our understanding of Piotrowska’s work. \nCaptioning will be available for this program. \nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \nSelected Film\nPersona\, dir. Ingmar Bergman\, 93 minutes\nBy the midsixties\, Ingmar Bergman had already conjured many of the cinema’s most unforgettable images. But with the radical Persona\, this supreme artist attained new levels of visual poetry. In the first of a series of legendary performances for Bergman\, Liv Ullmann plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute; an equally mesmerizing Bibi Andersson is the garrulous young nurse caring for her in a remote island cottage. While isolated together there\, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference that would prove to be one of cinema’s most influential creations. Acted with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by the great Sven Nykvist\, Persona is a penetrating\, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth. \nAbout the series\n[untitled] is a three-part film series inspired by ICA’s current exhibition\, Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies\, that highlights the various technical or thematic devices Piotrowska employs in cultivating her highly enigmatic and cinematic aesthetic. Each screening will begin with an offering that inspires close looking and ends with a group discussion moderated by a selected guest speaker. We invite participants to view the films together\, exchange their perspectives\, and engage in mutual learning. Film screenings will take place on September 18th\, October 23rd\, and November 20th. \nAbout the guest speaker\nTshay is a Jamaican-American filmmaker and artist from Amityville\, NY. She is a writer\, director\, producer\, shooter\, and editor who uses filmmaking to imagine a world where Black people have full creative agency over their lives. Working in close collaboration with loved ones\, Tshay creates films across documentary\, fiction and hybrid forms\, namely her debut narrative short film\, gales.\, which screened at BlackStar Film Festival\, American Black Film Festival\, Pan African Film Festival\, and a number of universities and organizations worldwide. She is the recipient of awards from Art Works\, Sachs Arts\, and Independence Public Media Foundation\, and holds degrees from both University of Pennsylvania and University College London. She is currently developing her debut animated film\, TELL ME WHEN YOU GET HOME.\, through her production company Studio Tshay. \nSupport\nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong. \nSupport for Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies has been provided by The Inchworm Fund. Additional support has been provided by Danielle Anderman\, Cecile & Chris D’Amelio\, Stacey Burke Frost & Benjamin Marc Frost\, Christina Weiss Lurie\, Norma & Lawrence Reichlin\, and Stephanie & David Simon.

SUMMARY:Great Wine Made Simple: The Wine Tasting Class
DESCRIPTION:This session is devoted to the great grape varieties that make wine a joy to drink and understand. We’ll explore the rich tapestry of flavors they offer and unravel the mysteries of wine labels\, all while savoring some truly delightful wines. By the end of our time together\, you’ll have the confidence to choose and order wine with ease\, ensuring you always get the bottle you desire\, no matter the price. \nThis class pays homage to Andrea Immer Robinson\, a Master Sommelier and bestselling author. Her book\, *Great Wine Made Simple* (Clarkson Potter)\, was published in 2000\, just months before our own Wine School of Philadelphia came into being. It quickly became required reading for our students\, and we still regard it as one of the finest introductions to wine for newcomers. \nAndrea has been a steadfast friend to our school. In 2004\, she honored us by serving as the keynote speaker at a lecture series hosted by the Wine School. The event took place at the Food Network’s Great Big Food Show in Philadelphia\, where she began her talk to a packed audience by declaring\, “You are lucky to have the Wine School of Philadelphia\,” and shared some generous words about our director\, Keith Wallace. \nThis class is a tribute to *Great Wine Made Simple* and our cherished friend\, Andrea. Like her book\, it is designed to give wine students a straightforward approach to decoding the labels of the world’s finest wines. You can expect to journey through the classic wine regions of France\, Italy\, Spain\, and beyond\, gaining insight and appreciation for the wines they produce.

SUMMARY:David Hayes Conducts Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Music Director David Hayes conducts the music of three 20th-century geniuses influenced by New York. Leonard Bernstein began writing a violin concerto for Isaac Stern in 1953 and through the course of ensuing decades\, it remained one of his fondest works. It is performed by violinist Sandy Cameron\, a tour de force in 20th and 21st-century repertoire\, hailed as “brilliant” by The Washington Post. Bartók’s Divertimento\, written weeks before he was forced to leave fascist Europe for the life of an exile in New York City\, is a musical contrast to Kernis’ Musica Celestis\, inspired by the medieval conception of angels singing in heaven. \nDuration: 80 minutes including intermission

SUMMARY:Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Dvořák & Price with Yannick
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a musical odyssey with GRAMMY Award-winning conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Curtis Symphony Orchestra. In this enchanting afternoon\, delight in groundbreaking works by luminaries Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Florence Price\, harmoniously paired with Antonín Dvořák’s pastoral Symphony No. 8. \nExperience the emotional depths of Coleridge-Taylor’s lively\, rhapsodic\, unabashedly Romantic work—a milestone for the prolific 22-year-old composer. Price’s Symphony No. 1 follows\, a historic marvel seamlessly blending classical idioms with African American spirituals and blues. Conclude the performance with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8\, a sun-dappled masterpiece radiating joyous optimism\, evoking the Bohemian countryside’s rolling green hills and rustic folk melodies.

SUMMARY:Tongue & Groove: Secrets

SUMMARY:The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa FastHorse
DESCRIPTION:The perfect Thanksgiving play put together by a group of clueless but well-meaning educators? The result is something which ends up portraying the same clichés associated with the holiday. \nThe Thanksgiving Play\, by Larissa FastHorse\, premiered on Broadway in 2023 at the Helen Hayes Theater. The production marked the first time that a female Native American playwright had a play produced on Broadway. \nFastHorse wrote the play in response to the prevailing view that her plays were not producible because of the lack of Native American talent. The Thanksgiving Play treats issues such as underrepresentation of indigenous actors as well as shedding light on misguided attempts to represent Native Americans in American society without using any Native American actors.\n“Very\, very funny…this clever satire is something for which to be truly thankful.”\nThe Hollywood Reporter \nPerformances:\nNovember 22\, 23\, 29\, 30\, December 5\, 6 & 7 at 8 PM\nNovember 24\, December 1\, 7 & 8 at 2 PM
