SUMMARY:Materialize
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to partner with Craft Movie Club to present “Materialize\,” an exhibition that showcases sixteen artists\, all working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal and glass to respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, “The Invisible Man.” \nIn the film\, scientist Jack Griffin uses an extraction from an obscure flower—originally used to bleach textiles—to render himself invisible. How\, “Materialize” asks\, do the artists on display mirror the scientist at the heart of the film? How do they manipulate the natural world to transform their raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects? And do they\, in performing their craft\, ever transform themselves? \nMaterialize will be on view in Gallery 1 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Saturday\, November 2\, from 4-7 pm.

SUMMARY:Across Ten Thousand Mountains 万重山 | Jing Huang Ceramic Artist
DESCRIPTION:Across Ten Thousand Mountains\nJing Huang\, ceramic artist\nOctober 3 – November 21\, 2024\nGravers Lane Gallery\, Philadelphia\, PA \nAcross Ten Thousand Mountains\n万重山 \nGravers Lane Gallery is pleased to present “Across Ten Thousand Mountains”\, ceramic artist Jing Huang’s first solo exhibition at Gravers Lane Gallery. The first of two receptions will take place on October 4th\, 5pm-8pm. Please join Jing Huang’s opening night presentation at 6:30pm. The second reception will take place November 1st\, 5pm-8pm and the exhibition closes on November 21st 2024. \n“Across Ten Thousand Mountains” is an exploration of nature\, migration\, identity\, memory\, and home. Born and raised in the small mountainous city of Guilin (桂林) in southern China\, Jing Huang brought her art practice to Canada in 2013 and later to the U.S. in 2018. Amid the dislocation and ambiguity of being neither here nor there\, Jing anchors herself by tracing her past and drawing inspiration from early memories of her background and hometown’s landscape after a long absence. Her ceramic forms explore the unknown scenery between her past and present\, reflecting the flow of landscape and atmosphere in changing environments. These works embody the nature of her diasporic experience\, living and moving among different cultures and languages. They transcend mere representation of her hometown or any specific location; rather\, they seek a deeper understanding of her identity and experience in the world.

SUMMARY:Finding Healing In The Remnants
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the Opening of Finding Healing in The Remnants: A Solo Exhibition by Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS) at DVAA! \nAbout the Exhibition: What do we do with the shards of something broken—especially when the thing that’s been broken is the self? This is the question at the heart of “Finding Healing in the Remnants\,” an exhibition of work by multimedia artist Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS) proudly presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance. Rebuilding has a reputation for being painful—but what if there were comfort to be found in the familiarity of the pieces? \n“This exhibition is an exploration of the ways in which feeling broken can transform us\, as well as the things we can do to transform ourselves through that healing process\,” says SKOVeS\, an internationally shown multimedia artist and muralist living and working in Philadelphia. Sammy received their BFA in Fine Art from Rowan University in 2016. Sammy has worked on over 30 murals in Philadelphia and prides themselves on sharing the skills they have learned while working in public art for the last seven years. They are passionate about exploring healing\, connection and warmth through a variety of mediums—especially murals\, mosaic and collage. \nFinding Healing In The Remnants will be on view in Gallery 2 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Friday\, November 1\, from 4-7 pm.

SUMMARY:Experimental Woven Collage Making with Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS)
DESCRIPTION:This experimental collage class will teach participants to make their own paper collage weavings! We will explore the idea of finding healing through intuitive art making and getting lost in the process of creating\, by weaving together strips of different colored paper\, mixing in other collaged elements\, and letting the materials and process dictate what our creations become. \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Exhibition: What do we do with the shards of something broken—especially when the thing that’s been broken is the self? SUMMARY:Discover Your Wine Style: The Wine Tasting Class
DESCRIPTION:This class is meant to gently remove the shroud from the familiar yet daunting question: will I like that wine? Through a series of enjoyable and lively tastings\, you’ll discover the kinds of wines that naturally speak to your palate. \nAfter this class\, you’ll no longer find yourself tethered to the same predictable brands and varieties. You’ll be equipped to make more adventurous\, informed choices when selecting your next bottle. You’ll come to understand your very own wine style\, a revelation that will forever change the way you shop for wine. \nWhen faced with the vast array of bottles in a wine shop\, the sheer number of choices can be overwhelming. You might wonder\, will this wine please me? Or\, as has happened to so many before\, will it leave me regretting my purchase? You’re not alone in these musings. For centuries\, wine enthusiasts have wrestled with the same uncertainty. Our unique tastes mean that no wine is universally loved\, and therein lies the beauty of the quest. \nTo truly savor wine\, you don’t need to master every grape or memorize every region. There’s no need to aspire to the knowledge of a sommelier. What you need\, quite simply\, is to know your own wine style. \nThis class will reveal the four essential keys to understanding your personal wine preferences. Drawing on a decade of research\, including insights from the Monell Chemical Senses Center here in Philadelphia\, we’ve distilled their findings into a delightful two-hour experience. Whether you’re new to wine or a seasoned sipper\, you’ll find this class both enlightening and enjoyable.

SUMMARY:The Wake: A Haunting Magic Experience
DESCRIPTION:“Unlike anything ever before” – Teller (of Penn & Teller). Using magic\, mind-reading\, and live music\, The Wake is a haunting\, immersive exploration of the space between life and death transporting guests beyond the veil. Perfect for Halloween season\, Philadelphia Magicians\, Musicians\, and Innovators Lindsey Noel\, Francis Menotti\, and Jon Gruver are bringing this spooky magical & musical theatrical immersive experience to Philadelphia’s SideQuest Theater for the month of October. Catch it hot off its invitational run at the 2024 Williamstown Theatre Festival as part of #WTFisNext\nMagic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes. Come experience The Wake for yourself – Tickets are limited per showing. \n*longer description*\nStraight from its successful invitational run at the legendary Williamstown Theatre Festival\, this haunting magical and musical immersive theatrical experience explores the space between life and death and invites all participants to sink into and revel in the unknown. Come along with the Director\, the Spiritualist\, and the Orator as you navigate the Deceased brain’s final firings. As electrical impulses continue beyond heart beats\, will anyone ever truly cross over or are we stuck in the seemingly eternal dream state of increasingly infinitesimal electric impulses? \nThe Wake\, a site specific immersive journey\, is inhabiting our space here at SideQuest Theater. Read below for a taste of what’s in store (or don’t – the choices start here)… \nYou step inside a theater in Center City Philadelphia. The stage is set in an unexpected fashion. The Director here at Daniel Graboli’s Funeral Practice greets you with the guest book and a funeral chip to mark your time at The Wake. Your evening celebrating the life of the lucky Deceased begins with beautiful music pouring from the Orator and filling the room. The Spiritualist may find you and offer you comfort or answers\, depending on what you seek in your time of need. \nThe veil slides back as the Ceremony begins and the sound of brooding accordion fills the room even more. You are compelled towards the sound only to be greeted by The Attendant\, whose aim is to elevate your experience with us here at Graboli’s. We begin as the Deceased is revealed to us all\, even themselves. Not an actor but a regular person – one just like you – only they are gifted this evening with the hope of transition from this realm into the next. \nMagic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes. \n“Unlike anything ever before!” – Teller (of Penn & Teller) \nCome experience The Wake for yourself.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: A Guide to Witches
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “A Guide to Witches\,” on the figure of the witch in history\, legend\, folklore\, and fairy tales\, with Linda Lee\, lecturer in folklore and literature at the University of Pennsylvania. \nGet ready for something spellbinding: A look at various depictions of witches as reflections of ideas about female sexuality\, independence\, agency\, and power. \nOffering up this pre-Halloween treat will be folklorist Linda Lee\, who previously has given excellent talks at the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown on dark Christmas folklore and the goddess Persephone. \nWe’ll start with an introduction to witches from European folklore\, fairy tales\, and legends. You’ll learn how they’re generally portrayed as powerful\, solitary\, and defiant figures who can be either helpful or harmful. They may appear as mothers\, helpers who aid a hero on a quest\, or monsters to be vanquished. They can represent a threat to the community by snatching children or pilfering cows’ milk. \nIndividual witches who will be conjured up include the child-eating witch from Grimms’ “Hansel and Gretel” and Baba Yaga\, the ambiguous witch of Slavic folklore who lives in a hut on chicken legs and flies around with a mortar and pestle. \nLee will then contrast such fictional depictions with the ideas about witches and witchcraft espoused by Christian demonological thought. \nYou’ll learn how witches are described by early modern sources like Malleus Maleficarum\, the 15th-century treatise on witchcraft which also served as a witch hunters’ manual. Such texts present witches as entirely malevolent figures who gain magical powers through a pact with the Devil (usually signed with menstrual blood). The witches in them are believed to use a special ointment that allowed them to fly to a Witches’ Sabbath\, where they dance and perform demonic rituals. \nYou’ll see how such ideas were visually reinforced through engravings\, woodcuts\, and drawings\, by artists like Albrecht Dürer\, that depicted naked women riding broomsticks and dancing with devils. \nYou’ll come away with a better understanding of why witches are among the most versatile\, notorious\, and enduring figures from fairy tales and legends and remain an iconic part of contemporary Halloween traditions. Feel free to dress witchy if you wish. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3 pm. Talk starts at 3:30.) \nImage: From “Preparation for the Witches’ Sabbath\,” by 17th Century Flemish artist David Teniers the Younger.
