SUMMARY:Basics of Drawing: Figure Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to “Figure It Out: Basics of Figure Drawing\,” your four-session workshop into the wonderful world of visual art! Whether you can barely draw a stick figure or you’re already doodling masterpieces\, this class is designed to empower you to capture the human form with flair and confidence. \nIn the first session\, we’ll break the ice with some basic anatomy and proportions—think of it as a crash course in seeing the human body like never before. We’ll explore simple shapes and lines to get the ball rolling. By the end\, you’ll be sketching figures that look like people. \nSessions 2 – 4 will combine learning techniques\, such as movement\, gesture\, shading\, and texture\, with a figure model. So grab your sketchbook and let’s get drawing—because every masterpiece starts with a single line! \n*Students must bring a Newsprint sketchbook (11×14). All other supplies will be provided

SUMMARY:Prima Materia
DESCRIPTION:Opens November 7\, 2024 through January 4\, 2025 with a reception and gallery talk\, November 14 5:00-7:00 PM (talk begins at 5:30)\, 301 High St W\, Glassboro\, NJ 08028. \nAll three artists are experienced makers actively creating provocative artworks that relate to materials and techniques associated with crafts such as embroidery\, beadwork\, decorative paper folding and cutting\, and elements from the scenic arts. Their efforts consistently yield marvelous results\, including novel sculptural objects\, sumptuously detailed and evocative two-dimensional works\, and challenging mixed-media installations that appeal to the senses through their impressive individual and collective visuality. Whether anchored on the wall or displayed in the round\, the works selected for Prima Materia generate visual and spatial synergies imbued with a powerful combination of subtle yet vibrant energies and symbolic archetypes. Not unlike living entities\, these works exert their agency upon us\, in a sense “arresting” our sensorial attention through their ability to convey something tangible and concrete about the ephemeral and transcendental nature of the creative impulse. \nEngaging with the alchemy of creativity through expertly crafted artworks\, Prima Materia is essentially visionary in scope. Subsumed within the effervescent flow of macro and micro historical trends that have shifted the definition and reproduction of fine art worlds into supporting the creation and display of art that can be technically described as “craft-oriented” and vice versa\, Prima Materia contributes to ongoing discourses around creative interdisciplinarity to push and expand the collective vision of contemporary art in 2024. Each of the three artists has striven to diversify what art is and what it can be made of\, into unique forms bounded by expressive materiality.

SUMMARY:Exotic Wines: The Wine Tasting Class
DESCRIPTION:**The Quest for Rare and Remarkable Wines** \nThe pursuit of the exotic is as old as the hills\, but when it comes to wine\, the quest takes on a particular charm. As we uncork these bottles\, a simple question lingers: Are these wines deliciously exotic\, or exotically delicious? By the end of this class\, you might find yourself pondering why the world at large has overlooked these hidden gems\, and you’ll be grateful that we have not. \nIn this gathering\, obscurity and rarity are the themes of the day. We’ve traversed continents—both in spirit and in person—to unearth wines that are as uncommon as they are intriguing. Here\, you’ll be introduced to wines from the most unexpected corners of the globe\, wines whose names you may not recognize but whose flavors will leave a lasting impression. Yet\, their exotic origins are only part of the story. These wines must stand on their own merit—they must be undeniably good. \nIf you are one to relish in discovering something new\, something extraordinary\, this class is your calling. But if you find contentment in the familiar embrace of a buttery Chardonnay\, you might find yourself a bit out of place. Some of these wines hail from far-flung regions\, others from grapes that defy the norm\, and some marry both in a way that is nothing short of magical. No matter how seasoned you are in the world of wine\, this experience is bound to expand your understanding of just how vast and varied that world truly is. \nThis class also offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a cellar master and sommelier. You’ll be privy to wines and regions long before they become the next big thing. Take\, for example\, the very first “Exotica” class at the Wine School back in 2002. Among the wines featured was a then little-known Malbec from Argentina\, a wine that has since found its place on the world stage. How the times have changed\, and how fortunate we are to have been ahead of the curve.

SUMMARY:A DVAA Screening of "The Invisible Man" (1933)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at DVAA for a special screening of James Whale’s 1933 classic “The Invisible Man”. Popcorn and candy will be provided at the event. DVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Movie: While researching a new drug\, Dr. Jack Griffin stumbles on a potion that can make him invisible. When he reveals his new ability to his old mentor and his fiancée\, it’s clear that a side effect of the potion is insanity. Jack goes on a violent rampage\, and the police struggle to hunt him down\, unable to see their target\, while his mentor and his former partner desperately try to devise a plan to capture him. \nThis is an accompanying event of Colin Pezzano’s Group Exhibition “Materialize”. \nAbout the Exhibition: Craft Movie Club presents: Materialize explores the intersection of classic cinema and contemporary craft practices. Sixteen artists\, working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal\, and glass\, respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, The Invisible Man. In the film\, invisibility is made possible through the extraction of a flower used originally to bleach textiles. Just as the scientist Griffin transforms himself by manipulating the natural world\, these artists transform raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects. Ninety-one years later\, the film’s themes of invisibility\, scientific experimentation\, and ethical dilemmas remain relevant. This exhibition redefines expectations\, blending experimental techniques with traditional crafts to provoke thought and inspire a modern audience.

SUMMARY:Tongue & Groove: Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2006\, Tongue & Groove performs spontaneous theater – from hilarious to heartbreaking – inspired by real life experiences. \nIn October’s Secrets show\, each audience member is given an index card\, a pen\, and a provocative prompt: “Share a secret you keep.” Encouraged to answer honestly\, the audience anonymously submits their responses\, which are randomly drawn by the actors and read aloud. The ensemble then spontaneously performs a montage of funny and touching scenes & monologues inspired by their audience-collaborators’ submissions\, exploring the experiences that connect us all.

SUMMARY:Philly Zine Fest
DESCRIPTION:The Soapbox Community Print Shop is thrilled to announce the Philly Zine Fest\, happening on November 9\, 2024 at Temple University’s Mitten Hall. \nZines (pronounced “zeens”\, short for “magazines”) are hand made\, self published books embracing a do-it-yourself asthetic focusing more on expressing the views of the creator than making a profit. Covering topics ranging from the personal to the political\, and everything in between\, zine-making is a thriving community in Philadelphia. This year’s event will be the biggest Philly Zine Fest in the event’s 22 year history\, featuring over 150 exhibitors displaying\, selling\, and trading zines. \nThere will be a free zine making station where exhibitors and attendees can make their own zines using various collage and drawing tools\, a laser printer\, a mimeograph machine\, and typewriters borrowed from the South Philly-based typewriter repair shop Philly Typewriter! \nThe 2024 Philly Zine Fest Anthology will debut at the event. This printed zine features work from various exhibitors of the zine fest. The anthology is black and white and features comics\, art\, drawings\, prose\, poetry\, and photography\, and will be available for free while supplies last. \nLast but not least is the return of the Philly Zine Fest Free Zine Box outside Mitten Hall on Broad Street. Take a zine\, leave a zine\, let the free flow of information commence! \nFree for all attendees\, anyone interested in art\, local subcultures\, and printed media will find many works of interest and creators to interact with. The Philly Zine Fest is also the perfect place to purchase a quirky or unique gift for the discerning bibliophile for this holiday season. \nOrganized by the West Philly-based Soapbox Community Print Shop since 2019\, this year’s fest is sponsored by Temple University Libraries. \nPhilly Zine Fest\nNovember 9\, 2024\n10-5pm\nTemple University’s Mitten Hall\n1913 N Broad St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19122\nphillyzinefest.org\nFREE! \nFor media inquiries or additional information\, please contact:\nzinefest@phillysoapbox.org
