SUMMARY:SUBVERSION cabaret - AfroFuturism + AfroSurrealism
DESCRIPTION:A whisper from the future… a pulse from the past. We call it SUBVERSION.\nOn Saturday\, October 5th\, the final chapter of our annual Black Burlesque Trilogy begins. SUBVERSION is not only a cabaret\, it’s a portal. A ritual of Afro-Surrealism and Afro-Futurism\, where flesh\, spirit\, and the unknown unite in a lavish world of mystery and desire. \nJoin us in an avant garde\, experimental cabaret —interactive\, immersive\, and unapologetically otherworldly. Will you witness the future? Or will you become it? \nSUBVERSION is an avant-garde theatrical show experience that invites guests into a sanctuary of black excellence and liberation for one-night-only focused on all things Afro-Futurism and Afro-Surrealism. \nSUBVERSION by Siren Pack is the final part of the annual Black Burlesque Trilogy. It features an all-Black cast (though all identities are welcome to attend) and centers on the exploration of the Black future\, following the themes of ancestral homage (PRIMAL\, in celebration of Black History Month) and present liberation (FREEDOM in celebration of Juneteenth) from the first two parts of the trilogy. The show is an avant-garde blend of sensuality\, ritual\, and performance art\, offering a powerful celebration of Blackness featuring an all star ensemble: Queerly Femmetastic\, Ashantidoll\, Zami’Fae\, MovaKween\, La Deva Arazel\, Switchress Shay Au Lait\, DJ Gozer\, Emerald Sazerac and Marvin the Professor. \nWhile it is the 3rd part of the annual trilogy\, if this is your first time attending\, you will enjoy it. Each show has its own independent story with many of the same performers.

SUMMARY:Across Ten Thousand Mountains 万重山 | Jing Huang Ceramic Artist
DESCRIPTION:Across Ten Thousand Mountains\nJing Huang\, ceramic artist\nOctober 3 – November 21\, 2024\nGravers Lane Gallery\, Philadelphia\, PA \nAcross Ten Thousand Mountains\n万重山 \nGravers Lane Gallery is pleased to present “Across Ten Thousand Mountains”\, ceramic artist Jing Huang’s first solo exhibition at Gravers Lane Gallery. The first of two receptions will take place on October 4th\, 5pm-8pm. Please join Jing Huang’s opening night presentation at 6:30pm. The second reception will take place November 1st\, 5pm-8pm and the exhibition closes on November 21st 2024. \n“Across Ten Thousand Mountains” is an exploration of nature\, migration\, identity\, memory\, and home. Born and raised in the small mountainous city of Guilin (桂林) in southern China\, Jing Huang brought her art practice to Canada in 2013 and later to the U.S. in 2018. Amid the dislocation and ambiguity of being neither here nor there\, Jing anchors herself by tracing her past and drawing inspiration from early memories of her background and hometown’s landscape after a long absence. Her ceramic forms explore the unknown scenery between her past and present\, reflecting the flow of landscape and atmosphere in changing environments. These works embody the nature of her diasporic experience\, living and moving among different cultures and languages. They transcend mere representation of her hometown or any specific location; rather\, they seek a deeper understanding of her identity and experience in the world.

SUMMARY:Hacia La Luz
DESCRIPTION:Hacia la luz is a dance journey into the many worlds I have inhabited. This work is the culmination of an intensive exploration into my Andean ancestry through extensive travels and studies with gifted Shamans coupled with my lifelong passion and commitment to my beloved flamenco. \nAfter I discovered several years ago that I was of 51% Andean indigenous descent\, I immersed myself in the spiritual teachings of Andean Shamanic medicine and rituals. While on this path\, I sought out healing modalities that allowed me to connect with the light and dark shadows that I have inherited. My spiritual interests and studies of Andean cosmology have led me to question the paradigms that governed my prevailing notions of reality\, identity\, creativity\, activism\, spirituality\, race\, gender\, class\, and sexuality. Through the lens of flamenco and my own dance modalities\, I hope that Hacia la luz will invite the audience to go on a journey of connection and healing\, and to look deeply at the dark shadows we have all inherited. Join me as we bear witness to what haunts us\, and we ask ourselves\, “How can we repair el daño (the damage)?”

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Premiere of Alabama Story by Kenneth Jones at The Old Academy Players
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — As part of its 2024-2025 Season\, The Old Academy Players is proud to present the Philadelphia Premiere of Alabama Story by American playwright (and Delaware County native) Kenneth Jones. The Old Academy Players’ 542nd production will run September 13-29\, 2024; with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and two Sunday matinees\, September 22nd and 29th at 2:00 pm. It is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc. \nAlabama Story was given its first major reading in May 2013 as part of the Southern Writers’ Project at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. After additional readings in Salt Lake City and New York City\, Alabama Story welcomed its world premiere at Pioneer Theatre Company\, Salt Lake City\, UT\, January 9–24\, 2015\, and received enthusiastic reviews. \n“…a crowd-pleasing and imaginatively theatrical comedy-drama…at a time when intolerance is on the upswing and empathy is under siege\, Alabama Story is just the play we need.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch. \n“Alabama Story explores thorny racial issues with smarts and sensitivity.” —DC Metro Weekly. \n“A disarmingly engaging drama…thoughtfully written…nuanced…well-layered…” —Atlanta Journal-Constitution. \nSynopsis: As the Civil Rights movement is brewing\, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian in 1959 Montgomery\, Alabama. A contrasting story of childhood friends—an African American man and a woman of white privilege\, reunited in adulthood—provides private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Political foes\, star-crossed lovers\, and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor\, heartbreak\, and hope. Inspired by true events! \nThe stellar cast includes: Lorraine Barrett as Emily Wheelock Reed\, Clint Cleaver as Bobby Crone\, Nicole Gerenyi as Lily Whitfield\, Marc Johnson as Joshua Moore\, Mort Paterson as Senator E. W. Higgins\, Connor Patrick as Thomas Franklin\, Douglas Tague as Garth Williams\, Robert Toczek as Henry Branch/Passersby\, and Mike Zaleski as Hershel Webb. \nCarla Childs directs this Philadelphia Premiere of Alabama Story. The production team includes Vanessa Ballard\, Helga Krauss\, Alyssia Sims\, Sarah Swearer\, Karen Taylor-Young\, Dale Mezzacappa\, Judy Van Buskirk\, Mary Jane Fullam\, Renee Theis\, Mohammad Islam\, Phoenix Levine\, and Jesse Friedman. \nTicket prices are: $25 per adult; $15 for Students under 25 with valid ID; group rate (15 or more) $21 each. Tickets can be purchased online at www.OldAcademyPlayers.org. Reservations and more information can be obtained by calling the Box Office at 215-843-1109. Old Academy Players is located at 3544 Indian Queen Lane\, Philadelphia\, PA 19129. Parking for all performances is free. \nThe Old Academy Players has provided continuous community theater entertainment since 1923 and is a non-profit community theater in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia.
