SUMMARY:Temple Theaters Presents: IF PRETTY HURTS UGLY MUST BE A MUHFUCKA
DESCRIPTION:If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be A Muhf*cka \nBy Tori Sampson \nDirected by Ontaria Kim Wilson \nOctober 18th\, 19th\, and 20th. \nRandall Theater @ 2020 N. 13th St\, Philadelphia\, PA. \nIn the village of Affreakah-Amirrorkah\, no one questions that Akim is the one true\, perfect beauty – not even her jealous classmates. But they’ll be damned before they let her take over as leading lady in this story. Combining West African folklore and contemporary American culture\, Tori Sampson’s hilariously provocative play doesn’t ask the question “How much is beauty worth?” but rather\, “Why are so many willing to pay its price?”

SUMMARY:Bourbon! The Whiskey Tasting Class
DESCRIPTION:Bourbon\, that amber-hued elixir\, has long been a beloved companion to those who appreciate the finer things in life. In this class\, we invite you to journey through the world of bourbon\, discovering the secrets behind its creation\, the qualities that define greatness\, and the brands that stand out in a crowded field. Once dismissed as mere “brown liquor\,” bourbon has since earned a reverent title—the angel’s share. \nWhat do all exceptional spirits share? Time. These liquids rest for years\, sometimes decades\, in charred white oak barrels\, gathering complexity and character. \nThis class is a celebration of barrel-aged spirits\, tailored for those with a discerning palate and a thirst for the extraordinary. Whether it’s a Tennessee Bourbon or a locally crafted version from Philadelphia\, you’ll explore—and taste—a carefully curated selection of some of the finest examples. Alongside this exploration\, we’ll also delve into the art of crafting cocktails\, guiding you through the process of transforming white spirits into your very own signature whiskey.

Ms. Grand\, who has recently appeared as a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, maintains an active career as soloist and orchestral musician with the region’s top orchestras. SUMMARY:The Wake: A Haunting Magic Experience
DESCRIPTION:“Unlike anything ever before” – Teller (of Penn & Teller). Using magic\, mind-reading\, and live music\, The Wake is a haunting\, immersive exploration of the space between life and death transporting guests beyond the veil. Perfect for Halloween season\, Philadelphia Magicians\, Musicians\, and Innovators Lindsey Noel\, Francis Menotti\, and Jon Gruver are bringing this spooky magical & musical theatrical immersive experience to Philadelphia’s SideQuest Theater for the month of October. Catch it hot off its invitational run at the 2024 Williamstown Theatre Festival as part of #WTFisNext\nMagic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes. Come experience The Wake for yourself – Tickets are limited per showing. \n*longer description*\nStraight from its successful invitational run at the legendary Williamstown Theatre Festival\, this haunting magical and musical immersive theatrical experience explores the space between life and death and invites all participants to sink into and revel in the unknown. Come along with the Director\, the Spiritualist\, and the Orator as you navigate the Deceased brain’s final firings. As electrical impulses continue beyond heart beats\, will anyone ever truly cross over or are we stuck in the seemingly eternal dream state of increasingly infinitesimal electric impulses? \nThe Wake\, a site specific immersive journey\, is inhabiting our space here at SideQuest Theater. Read below for a taste of what’s in store (or don’t – the choices start here)… \nYou step inside a theater in Center City Philadelphia. The stage is set in an unexpected fashion. The Director here at Daniel Graboli’s Funeral Practice greets you with the guest book and a funeral chip to mark your time at The Wake. Your evening celebrating the life of the lucky Deceased begins with beautiful music pouring from the Orator and filling the room. The Spiritualist may find you and offer you comfort or answers\, depending on what you seek in your time of need. \nThe veil slides back as the Ceremony begins and the sound of brooding accordion fills the room even more. You are compelled towards the sound only to be greeted by The Attendant\, whose aim is to elevate your experience with us here at Graboli’s. We begin as the Deceased is revealed to us all\, even themselves. Not an actor but a regular person – one just like you – only they are gifted this evening with the hope of transition from this realm into the next. \nMagic show? Seance? Concert? Play? Choose Your Own Adventure? Yes. \n“Unlike anything ever before!” – Teller (of Penn & Teller) \nCome experience The Wake for yourself.

SUMMARY:Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture Asian Arts Initiative October 22\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nGiant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture\nAsian Arts Initiative\nOctober 22\, 2024 \nTuesday\, October 22\, 6:30pm\, Asian Arts Initiative\nBook Event: Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture \n➡️Image Assets \nAsian Arts Initiative\n1219 Vine Street Philadelphia\, PA 19107\n215-557-0455\nhttps://asianartsinitiative.org/\nInstagram / Facebook\nPress Contacts:\nJino Lee\, Brand & Publicity Director\njino@asianartsinitiative.org \nPhiladelphia\, PA – The long-awaited celebration of Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture is here! To mark this cultural milestone\, editor and founder Eric Nakamura is hitting the road\, making a very rare stop to the East Coast in Philadelphia and New York. This exciting tour brings to life the story of the groundbreaking publication that redefined what it means to be Asian-American in popular culture\, with tributes from luminaries like Margaret Cho\, Randall Park\, Jia Tolentino\, and more.\nIt all began in Los Angeles in 1994\, when two Asian-American punk rockers stapled together the first issue of their DIY zine\, covering topics ranging from Sumo wrestling to Hong Kong cinema and Osamu Tezuka. From these humble beginnings\, Giant Robot exploded into the mainstream\, circulating more than 60\,000 copies annually at its peak. But it didn’t stop there—the brand expanded into restaurants\, galleries\, and retail stores in Los Angeles\, New York\, and San Francisco. As their influence grew throughout the ’90s and ’00s\, Giant Robot received prestigious invitations to the White House under President Barack Obama\, to speak at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design\, and to curate the GR Biennale at the Japanese American National Museum.\nOver three decades\, Giant Robot offered an unapologetic and authentic platform for bicultural perspectives\, bridging the gap between Asian and Asian-American pop culture. The magazine boldly covered everything from civil rights activists to skateboarding and Sriracha\, making it a touchstone for generations of artists\, musicians\, creators\, and collectors. Giant Robot was a cultural hub where toy collectors\, cartoonists\, and street style pioneers shared space with profiles on Michelle Yeoh\, Karen O\, James Jean\, and Haruki Murakami.\nThe new book\, Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture\, features the best from the magazine’s sixty-eight issue run\, alongside never-before-seen photographs\, additional writing by long-time contributor Claudine Ko\, and tributes from notable fans like Daniel Wu\, Peggy Oki\, Takashi Murakami\, and Natasha Pickowicz.\nEric Nakamura\, who began Giant Robot as a photocopied zine in 1994\, built it into a cultural phenomenon that captured the imagination of a multiracial audience interested in Asian popular culture. Nakamura continues to influence the scene with the Giant Robot store and GR2 Gallery in Los Angeles\, where pop culture goods and art exhibitions keep the legacy alive. \nJoining Nakamura on this tour is Anne Ishii\, former Executive Director of Asian Arts Initiative and current Program Director at United States Artists. As a writer\, editor\, and translator\, Anne’s work has appeared in BUST\, Nylon\, Slate\, and the Philadelphia Inquirer\, among others. She co-founded MASSIVE GOODS\, an arts agency representing queer and feminist Japanese artists\, and has translated over 20 books.\nThis tour is a must-see for anyone passionate about Asian-American culture\, art\, and history. Don’t miss the chance to experience the legacy of Giant Robot and hear firsthand from Eric Nakamura about the magazine that shaped a generation. \nPresented with support from: \nAbout Asian Arts Initiative:\nLocated in Philadelphia’s Chinatown North\, Asian Arts Initiative is a multidisciplinary arts center offering exhibitions\, performances\, artist residencies\, youth workshops\, and a community gathering space. Here\, all of us can view and create art that reflects our lives\, and think critically\, creatively about the future we want to build for our communities.

SUMMARY:Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture Asian Arts Initiative October 22\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 22\, 6:30pm\, Asian Arts Initiative\nBook Event: Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture \n➡️Image Assets \nAsian Arts Initiative\n1219 Vine Street Philadelphia\, PA 19107\n215-557-0455\nhttps://asianartsinitiative.org/\nInstagram / Facebook\nPress Contacts:\nJino Lee\, Brand & Publicity Director\njino@asianartsinitiative.org \nPhiladelphia\, PA – The long-awaited celebration of Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture is here!

SUMMARY:[untitled] Film Series: The Green Ray with Joanna Piotrowska
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, October 23rd at 6PM for a screening of Eric Rohmer’s 1986 film\, The Green Ray\, followed by a discussion with exhibiting artist Joanna Piotrowska. This film explores themes of isolation and intimacy relating to the works featured in Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies. Romher—a lesser-known French New Wave director—shares several interests with Piotrowska\, including the use of amateur models and actors\, working with friends\, and using authentic domestic interiors. This is the second of three parts in the [untitled] film series\, which aims to deepen our understanding of Piotrowska’s work.
