SUMMARY:Pumpkin "Cabbage Patch Kids"
DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, Hillary Bor and Chef Ian Moroney opened Pumpkin BYOB on a sleepy stretch of South Street with a fresh vision for cooking simply and seasonally. Now\, twenty years later\, the neighborhood is thriving\, as are farm-to-table restaurants around the city. \nTo celebrate their 20th anniversary\, Pumpkin will devote the second half of 2024 to one of Ian’s favorite ingredients: No\, not pumpkin. Cabbage! \nThey have invited over a dozen chefs from the Philadelphia area to create a dish using cabbage that reflects the style of their cooking\, heritage\, and restaurant. They’re calling them the Cabbage Patch Kids. Each dish will run for three nights only (Tuesday-Thursday) on the normal three course prix fixe menu at Pumpkin\, either as one of the appetizers or one of the entree choices. Each month will feature at least two Cabbage Patch Kid recipes\, beginning in May until the end of the year. There will be a punch card\, where diners can earn a free dinner at Pumpkin by trying eight of the cabbage dishes. \nThe first Cabbage Patch Kid was Chef Alex Yoon from Little Fish. Little Fish is the first restaurant Ian worked at when he moved from Syracuse to Philadelphia\, about 25 years ago\, back when his father owned it. Now Alex is the chef and owner and while a lot has changed\, there is definitely a throughline. Alex’s dish was a charred cabbage and pork dumpling. \nChef Alex will be joined in May by Chef Ange Branca of the newly opened Kampar. Their two cabbage dishes will celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. \nJune will see two new Cabbage Patch Kids\, celebrating Pride Month: Joncarl Lachman of Winkel and Diana Widjojo of Rice and Sambal. \nHere’s the current list of Cabbage Patch Kids: \nAlex Yoon\, Little Fish\nAlexandra Holt\, Roxanne\nAndrew Wood\, Le Virtu\nAnge Branca\, Kampar\nCarlos Aparicio\, El Chingon\nCasey Webb\, Man v Food\nChance Anies\, Tabachoy\nDiana Widjojo\, Rice & Sambal\nEli Collins\, A.Kitchen\nJoncarl Lachman\, Winkel\nKiki Aranita\, Poi Dog\nLiz Grothe\, Scampi\nLor Kats\, Saami Somi\nMelissa McGrath\, Sweet Amalia\nOmar and Cybille Tate\, Honeysuckle Prov\nPat Alfiero\, Heavy Metal\nRebecca Foxman\, Fox & Sons \nBe sure to follow Pumpkin to see the chef line up each month\, the dishes they are creating\, and an adorable cabbage patch style illustration (they may need to make some swag using these images\, they are just that cute).

SUMMARY:Hundred Acre Park
DESCRIPTION:Get lost in nature with Pooh\, Piglet\, and all your favorite friends in a new musical adaptation of A.A. Milne’s original Winnie-the-Pooh novels\, where the Hundred Acre Wood becomes the Hundred Acre Park! Playful puppetry will bring these lovable toys to life once again for a new generation of young ones growing up in a city like Philadelphia! \nThis production reimagines the characters for the modern child living in a time of climate change and urbanization\, asking the question of “how do we talk to children about climate change?”\, all without losing any of the magic and whimsy that made these stories magical in the first place. From Pooh’s journey up a very tall tree to meet some bees\, to Eeyore needing a birthday present\, to the time nobody could remember the last time it rained this much\, the vignettes will take the whole family on an adventure across this lively park\, while giving children a safe context to help understand the rapidly changing world around them. Hundred Acre Park is a folksy musical walk through the park with puppetry\, whimsy\, and fun for young children and inner children alike.

SUMMARY:Public Reading of the First Prayer in Congress
DESCRIPTION:On September 7\, 1774\, Rev. Jacob Duché delivered a rousing invocation/prayer at Carpenters’ Hall before the Founding Fathers at the First Continental Congress. \nExactly 250 years later\, Carpenters’ Hall will mark this moment – which set a precedent for prayer in Congress that continues to this day – with a free public reading of the invocation. \nFollowing the brief reading outside at 11 a.m.\, attendees will be welcomed into Carpenters’ Hall to explore the historic site and see two versions of a famous painting depicting Rev. Duché and the delegates in Carpenters’ Hall. \nA John Adams reenactor will be on site along with several more characters in costume who will be performing short scenes relating to the First Continental Congress at 1pm and 3pm (https://www.carpentershall.org/building-independence-historical-reenactments). \nThis event concludes a two-part series that considers prayer and religion in American government and civic culture. On September 5\, Carpenters’ Hall hosts nine faith leaders to discuss and debate this topic (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-best-and-surest-foundation-tickets-953656902467?aff=oddtdtcreator). The series helps commemorate the 250th anniversary of Carpenters’ Hall and The First Continental Congress\, and the 300th anniversary of The Carpenters’ Company of The City and County of Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Locker Room Pep Talk\, Fringe Show
DESCRIPTION:Do you need a pep talk? Of course you do! How could you not? Come to the Old Pine Community Center Locker Room where the game is not over yet\, and we may be losing\, but that does not mean we’re losers. This show is for 2 kinds of people\, people who love sports\, people who don’t love sports and people who always wanted to be in a locker room for 45 minutes as a middle age man in a track suit does his best to inspire you to win at the biggest game of all; LIFE . . . . or at least not lose at it. Locker Room Pep Talk is part of the 2024 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Follow @andrewscharff for updates and to learn about ticket availability. There are only 15 seats per show so act now to get yours.

SUMMARY:Forehand Down the Line
DESCRIPTION:Serving it up tennis style FOREHAND DOWN THE LINE is about the gestural interplay of tennis’ ball people. These sideline speedsters who chase down fugitive balls are the support system to tennis matches. Philadelphia’s avant-garde choreographer Thomas Choinacky premieres this monumental dance calling attention to tennis’ agile and (in)visible\, yet unannounced workers. Absurd\, symmetrical\, and with contorted repetition\, this visual fantasia queers the idea of “champion.”

SUMMARY:Free Art Show- Rebecca Schultz- Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:For the month of September on view are works by Rebecca Schultz. Her showcase\, Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond explores in colorful depth the compositions under our feet and looming alongside us\, the local rock formations we overlook. There she finds poetry and history in recesses and outreaches. A beautiful statement is found through the fluidity of paint to represent the rigid structure of geology. In taking such a close examination of the quite strength we take for granted yet depend so much on\, Schultz asks us to appreciate the subtleties and learn more about ourselves. \nStop in the gallery 4 days a week to view and add to your collection. All works are also available for sale online through our site www.blackmothgallery.com. You will not want to miss out on experiencing these one of a kind works in person. \n10% of all proceeds will go to Friends of the Earth
