Jacob Duche’s rousing 1774 invocation\, a moment that set a precedent for prayer in Congress that continues to this day. \nBonus event: On Saturday\, September 7 at 11:00 a.m.\, Carpenters’ Hall will host a free public reading of the original prayer on its actual 250th anniversary. \nThe series helps commemorate the 250th anniversary of Carpenters’ Hall and The First Continental Congress\, and the 300th anniversary of The Carpenters’ Company of The City and County of Philadelphia.

Marquis de Lafayette’s bicentennial in Philadelphia this month and the series of events being celebrated in Philadelphia and across the country. \nGen. Lafayette is well known as an American Revolutionary War hero\, but a less known fact is he was also a Freemason. The Masonic Temple has paired with the Alliance Francaise de Philadelphia and The American Friends of Lafayette to offer French speaking guided tours of the Temple – including an exhibition showcasing written correspondence by Lafayette and other artifacts from the museum collection – on Sept. 19 and 27\, from 6 – 7 p.m. \nIn addition\, The American Friends of Lafayette will host an elegant Lafayette soiree at the Masonic Temple on Saturday\, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. This event\, which is open to the public\, will feature 19th century elegance\, including musicians playing period pieces and 19th century dancing.

DESCRIPTION:On September 7\, 1774\, Rev. Jacob Duché delivered a rousing invocation/prayer at Carpenters’ Hall before the Founding Fathers at the First Continental Congress. \nExactly 250 years later\, Carpenters’ Hall will mark this moment – which set a precedent for prayer in Congress that continues to this day – with a free public reading of the invocation. \nFollowing the brief reading outside at 11 a.m.\, attendees will be welcomed into Carpenters’ Hall to explore the historic site and see two versions of a famous painting depicting Rev. Duché and the delegates in Carpenters’ Hall. \nA John Adams reenactor will be on site along with several more characters in costume who will be performing short scenes relating to the First Continental Congress at 1pm and 3pm (https://www.carpentershall.org/building-independence-historical-reenactments). \nThis event concludes a two-part series that considers prayer and religion in American government and civic culture. The Block Party will also celebrate the Rail Park’s local community with hands-on arts activities and attendance from various cultural organizations.
