SUMMARY:Bards University
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Hum’n’bards Theater Troupe as part of 2025 Philly Theatre Week!\nBards University is an afternoon series of theatrical workshops on Saturday\, April 5th. Attendees can select specific workshops to attend\, or join us for all three! \nWorkshops are as follows:\n12:30-1:30pm – Unlocking Shakespeare with Ryan Walter\n2:00-3:00pm – Stage Manage With Me(lody)! with Melody Wong\n3:30-4:30pm – Getting Off-Book with CJ Higgins \n-Unlocking Shakespeare-\nIn this workshop we will be delving into the depths of the most human playwright to ever live. We will learn the applicable skills that are needed to decode and uncover the true meaning and drive behind Shakespeare’s poetry\, while also honoring the beauty and power that his language evokes. This language was never meant to be lofty and above us all\, quite the opposite in fact as it was always meant to be a public spectacle\, and with the right training anyone can make the Bard’s language their own. So let us work together to demystify Shakespeare and bring the humanity behind his scripts to life! \n-Stage Manage with Me(lody)!-\nIn this workshop Melody will provide the basic understanding of the role of stage management and knowledge in the practical skills to manage all aspects of theatrical production\, including coordinating rehearsals\, overseeing technical elements (lights\, sound\, props)\, being the liaison between the creative teams\, ensuring a smooth and safe execution of the performance\, & fostering a safe and creative room in the rehearsals and production process. \n-Getting Off-Book: A Workshop on Text Memorization-\nDo you struggle to get off-book? Do you want to learn and identify different memorization techniques and find the right one for your brain? Then this is the workshop for you! Philadelphia theatre artist CJ Higgins (they/he pronouns) will teach you the skills of learning new text\, exploring various memorization techniques and how they can be applied to script work. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have a set of tools that can be used to get off-book for any text!

SUMMARY:The Philadelphia Chorus presents its Spring 2025 Concert “Remembrance”
DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia Chorus is presenting an exciting concert on Saturday\, April 5\, 2025\, at 4PM at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral (19 S. 38th Street\, Philadelphia). \nOur concert\, “Remembrance”\, will feature Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. Fauré\, influenced by his practical upbringing and formal music education at the Niedermeyer School\, composed a Requiem reflecting his peaceful attitude toward death\, drawing on the traditions of sacred music and great masters like Palestrina and Bach. This beloved composition’s atmosphere is one of depth and restraint; it is intimate\, mystical\, luminous and transcendent. \nThis concert will also feature another setting of the Requiem. Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen wrote the Requiem for Solace which was commissioned by the Nidaros Cathedral Boys’ Choir and was premiered in 2014. Using part of the original Requiem Mass text along with a poem by Emily Dickinson\, it is a work that has been described as “a choral piece that aims to provide comfort to those who are grieving or in pain… Every movement has a beautiful and endearing melody that creates a strong emotional reaction in both the performer and the listener.” \nIn addition\, we will present works by Z. Randall Stroope and others.\nTickets: $30; $25 Seniors & Advance Sales; $15 Students\nInformation: 215-995-3118; www.thephiladelphiachorus.org

SUMMARY:Jamey's House of Music Presents Blues & the Resurrection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins\, "I Put A Spell On You"
DESCRIPTION:Forget about zombies! With the Resurrection of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins Band\, the man who invented shock-rock is back and he is gonna put a spell on you. Don’t miss the most exciting stage act since Screamin’ Jay Hawkins first emerged from a coffin. – Steve Bergsman\, author of I Put a Spell on You: The Bizarre Life of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. \nFrom somebody who got to see Screamin’ Jay Hawkins himself\, The Resurrection of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins Band is practically the real thing\, and a must to witness. The Resurrection of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins Band is doing their part in Saving American Music.\n– Arnie Goodman\, Elmore Magazine \nThe Resurrection of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins Band performs live shows taking you back in time to the music of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. This project is comprised of extremely talented and seasoned musicians. Mike Armando was the original guitarist for Screamin’ Jay Hawkins back in the 1970’s. Another reason this project is exciting. The band is not just performing the music of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins but creating a time machine of one of rock’s true wild men. A show you will surely remember for many years. \nScreamin’ Jay Hawkins released “I Put a Spell On You” in 1956. The song\, that never made it to the charts when it was released\, would eventually be covered several hundred times by the likes of Nina Simone\, Credence Clearwater Revival\, and Marilyn Manson; Jeff Beck and Joss Stone’s version even received a Grammy nomination in 2010. It was selected as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was added to Rolling Stones’ list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. \nHawkins’ music and outlandish onstage persona inspired generations of musicians after him. And yet\, little is known of the man and little can be taken at face value. Hawkins interpreted his past with a poetic license to kill\, a magical amalgam of his own making—creating disparate stories alternatively terrible or sympathetic at his will.

SUMMARY:TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image presents Philly Photo Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image’s annual Philly Photo Day returns! The weeklong event invites Philadelphia photographers\, enthusiasts\, inhabitants\, commuters\, travelers\, and visionaries to help shine a light on the city we all love through photography. Philly Photo Day serves as a diverse record of Philadelphia through the eyes of those who inhabit\, visit\, work\, or have fun at this moment in history! Participants can capture a picture of anything in Philadelphia between April 7 and 13\, and then submit their photo through the online portal on the TILT website. Every submission will be included in a massive Philly Photo Day exhibition\, which is free and on display in TILT’s Project Gallery from May 8 – May 31. \nThis is an ONLINE-SUBMISSION for the upcoming event\, not the event itself.
