SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com

SUMMARY:NYC Bound Solo Show - Shatterproof
DESCRIPTION:Shatterproof-NYC Bound Solo Show \nA fast moving\, spell-binding tragic-comedy. A story about the life of a gifted artist and ingenious comedian who becomes schizophrenic and takes off hitchhiking across America in a futile effort to outrun his mental illness.  \nArrives at 2026 Philadelphia Fringe Festival \, Limited Engagement\, September 18-27\, 2026 \n“As Director\, I am so excited to bring this beautiful piece to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival” – Eric Tucker\, Artistic Director\, Bedlam Theatre Co\, NYC \n“It is a privilege to be let into her world. When this raw honesty is revealed\, its gravity is gripping” – All About Solo\, United Solo Festival \n“Monologues explode like bombs in slow motion…Ms. Block’s performance was brilliant.” – Hi-Drama\, William Cataldi \n\n\n\nMEDIA KIT FOR DOWNLOAD\n\n\n\nPhiladelphia\, PA: What if you thought the funniest and saddest thing you could ever write/act would be the story of your crazy brother taken directly from his own “manifesto” about his own illness?  In Shatterproof\, a solo show written and performed by Dana Block\, that’s exactly what is going down.  Dana Block draws on a world created by her brother in cartoons\, rants and ravings\, and tells the story of their artistic Jewish family in rural Missouri\, bringing each character fully to life on stage\, including the hallucinated ones!  In this boiling pot of mental illness and art\, life is precariously balanced.  This beautifully imagined one-woman show\, directed by award-winning Artistic Director of Bedlam Theatre Co\, Eric Tucker\, is headed to an Off-Broadway debut in November\, 2026.  It is not to be missed. Shatterproof is a true story\, given voice by a sibling who knows first hand\, the heartbreak of trying to save someone who is irretrievably lost.  Shatterproof (formerly produced as “Monkey Man” ) has been called “hilarious and heart breaking.” The limited engagement will play Icebox Project Space Gallery (1400 N American St\, Philadelphia\, PA) from September 18-27\, 2026. Tickets are available now via this link. \nShatterproof\, Dana Block’s autobiographical dark comedy comes to Philadelphia for three performances on September 18\, 26\, and 27 before its anticipated NYC Showcase run. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking\, the play tells the story of a sister’s quest to help her younger brother — a gifted artist and comedian (think Robyn Williams) – whose schizophrenia sends him on the road hitchhiking for decades. Inspired by Block’s own experiences growing up in a close-knit Jewish family\, Shatterproof gives voice to the sibling experience of losing a cherished loved one to an illness whose only promise is\, it cannot be cured.   \nShatterproof shares a wildly funny portrait of an artistic Jewish family from St. Joseph\, Missouri\, before unfolding the extraordinary story of Dana’s relationship with her brother. As a teenager\, Marc’s schizophrenia leads him to hitchhike across America in an attempt to outrun his illness and find himself. Twenty years later\, Dana begins a journey of her own—to try to bring back her brother.  \nThe original material for the show is drawn from Marc’s journals\, drawings\, and writings\, and brings audiences inside both the brilliance and chaos of his mental illness. Through humor\, honesty and compassion\, the play invites audiences to laugh at Marc\, laugh with Marc\, and fall in love with Marc and his utterly mischievous personality. \nThe title Shatterproof reflects the role Dana found herself playing within her family: the person who could hold the center and the only person who had the guts to go out and to try to find him. Dana discovered that loving her brother did not mean having the power to make decisions for him — it meant learning to accept that regardless\, he had possession of his own life and that it was his right to live it as he wanted. \nAt a time when conversations about mental health have never been more urgent\, Shatterproof reminds us that behind every diagnosis is a family painfully navigating impossible choices—and that even in our darkest moments\, laughter can become an act of survival. Catch Shatterproof before its Off-Broadway run and experience this extraordinary true story. \n### \nShatterproof \nWritten by Dana Block \nPerformed by Dana Block \nDirected by Eric Tucker \nIcebox Project Space Gallery (1400 N American St\, Philadelphia\, PA) \nPerformances September 18-27\, 2026 \nTickets at FringeArts.com \nBIOS \nDana Block (Actor) is a classically trained actor and writer who has created and toured 4 original solo shows\, and developed a full-length play under the tutelage of Edward Albee\, acting Master Playwright at Road Less Traveled Theater in Buffalo\, NY\, 2010. SUMMARY:The Deer Ones
DESCRIPTION:In this semi-autobiographical interactive dramedy\, the audience is invited to participate as the imaginary friends of a young girl playing in the woods. What starts off as “all fun and games” soon escalates into a series of moral dilemmas and life-changing decisions that explore questions like what does it really mean to care for another\, how do we carry (or release) guilt and loss\, and how do the ghosts of the past shape the adults of the future. With highly interactive moments and alternate endings\, every performance changes with the audience. Part of the Cannonball – Philadelphia Fringe Festival

SUMMARY:SPORTS!
DESCRIPTION:Two teams – LAVA and OBSIDIAN battle for ultimate SPORTS glory! Are our knees past their prime? YES. Are we good at SPORTS? YES AND NO AND ALSO KINDA. So why are we playing sports? Because now we’re ADULTS and there’s questions we can only answer in the SWEAT-POURING\, HEART-POUNDING HEAT OF COMPETITION that we sure as hell couldn’t answer in middle school gym class. \n  \nWe take the field to FIND OUT–what’s the line between HEALTHY and UNHEALTHY competition? What MYTHIC VERSIONS of ourselves are awakened in the whole-body pursuit of victory? \n  \nSo will YOU be there to root on your team and guide them to glory? HELL FREAKIN YEAH. \n  \nAnd listen–is your relationship with sports kinda complicated? OURS TOO. Some of us were going to be headed for the OLYMPICS but it SUCKED THE JOY OUT OF COMPETING. Some of us went to college to play volleyball and then tore our Achilles and found THEATER. Some of us avoided sports as much as we could because of TOXIC MASCULINITY. As queer people\, people with bodies past peak athletic performance\, and artists\, what belonging can we find as we collectively DUNK ON OUR DEMONS? \n  \nSO DON’T MISS this one-time-only professionally performed\, athletically amateur\, everything-on-the-line SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA. \n  \nSPORTS! Schedule:\nTailgate 3:00-5pm FREE queer pre-show tailgate event and cornhole tournament hosted by partner OutLoud Sports.\nShow 5-7pm SPORTS! Performance\nMovie 7:30-9:30pm sports film screening hosted by cinéSPEAK\, free with your SPORTS! ticket or $5-10 walk-up for the screening only.

Our work encourages audiences to feel themselves as part of nature’s life cycles. In the face of increasing climate change\, we hope to bring people together so they feel connected to each other and the environment we all live in.” \nEchoes of Renewal is a visually striking dance work that explores the connection between humanity and the natural world. Created by Continuum Dance Project\, with video by Ernesto Galan\, the piece blends powerful\, expressive choreography with themes of attention\, care\, and reciprocity. Designed for 5 performers who are constantly connected\, Echoes brings the essence of the outdoors inside. The work invites viewers to feel\, not just observe\, our place within nature’s cycles. \nInspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ and a personal sense of disconnection\, the work challenges audiences to reconsider their relationship to the seasons\, and the land we inhabit. SUMMARY:Houndstooth
DESCRIPTION:Vanessa Kamp brings Houndstooth\, a 60-minute interdisciplinary performance\, to this year’s Cannonball festival September 17th\, 20th\, and 26th at Icebox.  \nFamiliar objects are inverted and become the agents of new sonic territories; a wayward speedwalker bares all in a hottt striptease; an aspiring backwoods man’s strutting makes the space feel too small; an enigmatic clubgoer gives a poignant nod to contemporary French cinema; maybe we’re in some guy’s garage where he’s the dj. \nMultiple characters transit and inhabit sensorial spaces and soundscapes where themes of touch are at once literal and expansive\, and act as catalysts to create simple\, lush\, and elegantly surreal passages and scenes. \nUnadorned analog technologies create unexpected and immersive visuals and sound where action unfolds in diverse registers ranging from humor to drag to the surreal. \nTickets are on sale now: https://phillyfringe.org/events/houndstooth/\nGeneral Admission: $25\nPWYC Options\n \nVENUE\nIcebox Project Space\n1400 N American St.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Happiness Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Happiness Workshop\,” a look at what recent research and centuries of wisdom tell us about bringing more joy and contentment to our lives\, with Eric Zillmer\, professor of psychology and the director of the Happiness Lab at Drexel University. \nAre you happy? If not\, how do you get there? \nGain insights into happiness with Eric Zillmer\, an award-winning teacher who leads a creative think tank that investigates the ingredients for happiness among individual people and communities. He has graciously agreed to come back to the Fishtown’s Black Squirrel Club to deliver a talk on happiness that sold out and received rave reviews when he gave it last spring. \nYou’ll learn how the study of happiness is a growing\, evidence-based field known as positive psychology\, which aims to find solutions to happiness challenges that can bring positive change to our lives and environments. \nDr. Zillmer will discuss the meaning of happiness and its place in our lives and society. He’ll draw from recent science and great thinkers in discussing how we can increase our own happiness and well-being\, throwing out a few practical tips as well. \nHe’ll talk about whether happiness can be measured and where in our brain happiness is located. We’ll look at the influence of socializing and social media on our happiness and about the roles that music\, humor\, adversity\, and regret have in happiness research. \nDr. Zillmer will discuss what we learn about happiness from competitive sports\, and he’ll suggest ten actions that you can engage in that will make you happier. \nThe talk coincides with an immersive installation by Dr. Zillmer at The Study at University City at 20 S. 33rd Street until November 15th. Titled “The Philadelphia Happiness Map\,” it explores what makes people happy and the places in Philadelphia where they feel happiest. \nAmong the questions Dr. Zillmer will tackle in speaking at the Black Squirrel Club: What is the happiest day of the week? Can a specific place make you happy? What can we learn about happiness from travelling the world? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: Happiness in the face of a Tibetan Buddhist monk. (Photo by Wonderlane / Wikimedia Commons.)

SUMMARY:The Filangieri-Franklin Correspondence: Foundational Dialogue Between Italy and America
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia are pleased to present an evening exploring one of the earliest intellectual connections between Italy and the United States. Beginning with a hybrid lecture by Professor Amedeo Arena\, Full Professor of European Union Law at the University of Naples Federico II\, the program will examine the enduring significance of the correspondence between Gaetano Filangieri and Benjamin Franklin and the Enlightenment ideals that helped shape modern conceptions of liberty\, government\, and the pursuit of happiness. Drawing on Professor Arena’s recent publication\, Cittadino di tutti i luoghi\, contemporaneo di tutte l’età: l’universalità del pensiero di Gaetano Filangieri\, the lecture will reflect on Filangieri’s influence 250 years after the Declaration of Independence. \nFollowing the lecture\, guests are invited to a reception marking both the opening of Italian Heritage Month and the debut of HSP’s exhibition\, Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1900s\, which explores the evolving communities and identities that have shaped the Commonwealth’s story. A temporary exhibit of original documents related to the Filangieri-Franklin correspondence will also be on view for this evening only.
