SUMMARY:H&H Books Presents: Ariel Delgado Dixon / SOURLAND
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to host novelist Ariel Delgado Dixon at H&H Books to celebrate Sourland on Tuesday\, September 16! \nIn Sourland\, a power struggle over a prosperous (and illegal) weed farm ensues after the owner disappears. The main players? The owner’s ex-lovers. The Seattle Times describes Sourland as “the kind of literary thriller that gets dirt under its nails—moody\, combustible and charged with the sense that everyone is hiding something dangerous.” Harper’s Bazaar characterized it as “if you wish ‘Succession’ was a little more Gen Z.” \nCopies of Sourland will be available for purchase at the event. A Q&A and book signing will follow the discussion. \nRegistration is free and highly recommended!\nQuestions? Email events@theheadandthehand.com\, and follow @theheadandthehand on Instagram for events\, book clubs\, updates\, and more.

SUMMARY:Edgar Allan Poe's LIGEIA Reimagined through Physical Theatre at Cannonball Festival
DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: LIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented in the Cannonball Festival\, part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival\, at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St). This intimate physical theatre adaptation of the gothic masterpiece will run September 16-19. \nObsession for the lost LIGEIA spirals into madness in Poe’s haunting tale of unutterable grief and unimaginable terror. As chilling evidence of a supernatural presence mounts\, the audience wonders: are the narrator’s visions caused by opium\, or has his wife’s corpse been possessed? \nRather than dramatizing the events of the plot\, LIGEIA emphasizes the physical action of storytelling itself. Remaining faithful to Poe’s original text\, solo-performer William Trevino weaves poetic language with his decades of martial arts practice to create a visceral atmosphere of suspense. A 6th degree black belt in Soo Bahk Do and a veteran Poe performer\, Trevino transforms martial arts movement to embody the psychological struggles of Poe’s narrator. \n“I think of Poe’s language as a complex musical score\,” says Trevino. “My martial arts choreography doesn’t illustrate the story\, it dances to it.” \nWilliam Trevino’s work devising theatre from martial arts has been presented in NYC (including at Dixon Place and HERE Arts Center) with support from the Jerome Foundation and the Queens Arts Fund. His Poe performances have ranged from presenting The Tell-Tale Heart at the Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum in Baltimore\, to hosting the television series Gothic Tales on Manhattan Neighborhood Network/MNN. \nLIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented on September 16 (9:00 PM)\, 17 (6:00 PM)\, and 19 (3:30 PM) at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19107) as part of Cannonball\, a presenting hub of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. General Admission is $25\, with PWYC (pay what you can) tickets available. For tickets & info: https://phillyfringe.org/events/ligeia-by-edgar-allan-poe/ \nIntimate and emotionally intense\, the performance is intended for mature audiences. \n  \nMedia Photo link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1L6vn2oH-xd_1LnZch3v6fMgbopZu1tPU?usp=drive_link

SUMMARY:Amish Country Queer: A Night of Film\, Art & Drag
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard of Amish country. Bet you didn’t expect drag queens. An award-winning documentary\, a photo exhibition celebrating rural LGBTQ+ life\, and a homegrown drag show converge in one unforgettable night. \nAmish Country Queer is a film about Lancaster’s queer nightlife and drag culture\, and a story about what it means to be visibly\, joyfully\, unapologetically queer in a place the world told you wasn’t built for you. \nTulle Queer is an ongoing portrait series by trans artist Brady Pappas that honors the queer icons of the 717 region. Using tulle as a recurring visual motif\, the project creates a vibrant\, community-rooted celebration of visibility and resilience. \nThe Angel Hour is Lancaster’s second-longest-running drag show\, celebrating five years of glamour and sisterhood\, created by Charlize Angelz. \nThis is a night of celebration. Of queer bodies\, queer lives\, and queer autonomy. Of breaking the binaries and changing the narratives we’ve been handed about where we can live\, whom we can love\, and who we can be. Queerness has never been confined to city limits\, and this night proves it.

SUMMARY:Days of Awe
DESCRIPTION:A year after her mother’s death\, a poet in recovery moves home to Philadelphia with a suitcase\, a divorce\, and a lifetime of inherited stories. Set during the ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur\, Days of Awe blends poetry\, storytelling\, and chutzpah into a lyrical reckoning with grief\, desire\, and the inheritances we carry. \nFrom sleepless West Philly stoops to the ghost-lit borderlands of the Pale of Settlement\, this solo show traverses geographies and generations\, tracing a lineage of Jewish women through silence\, survival\, and return. \nTold with equal parts reverence and irreverence\, Days of Awe draws on family history and Jewish ritual to ask how we can carry loss while allowing ourselves to fall back in love with the world. \nDays of Awe is presented as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and Cannonball. \nThe show will take place on the third floor of the Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine Street Philadelphia\, PA 19107) \nTickets are available through FringeArts for $25 (pay-what-you-can options avilable): https://phillyfringe.org/events/days-of-awe/

SUMMARY:Houndstooth
DESCRIPTION:Vanessa Kamp brings Houndstooth\, a 60-minute interdisciplinary performance\, to this year’s Cannonball festival September 17th\, 20th\, and 26th at Icebox.  \nFamiliar objects are inverted and become the agents of new sonic territories; a wayward speedwalker bares all in a hottt striptease; an aspiring backwoods man’s strutting makes the space feel too small; an enigmatic clubgoer gives a poignant nod to contemporary French cinema; maybe we’re in some guy’s garage where he’s the dj. \nMultiple characters transit and inhabit sensorial spaces and soundscapes where themes of touch are at once literal and expansive\, and act as catalysts to create simple\, lush\, and elegantly surreal passages and scenes. \nUnadorned analog technologies create unexpected and immersive visuals and sound where action unfolds in diverse registers ranging from humor to drag to the surreal. \nTickets are on sale now: https://phillyfringe.org/events/houndstooth/\nGeneral Admission: $25\nPWYC Options\n \nVENUE\nIcebox Project Space\n1400 N American St.

SUMMARY:NYC Bound Solo Show - Shatterproof
DESCRIPTION:Shatterproof-NYC Bound Solo Show \nA fast moving\, spell-binding tragic-comedy. A story about the life of a gifted artist and ingenious comedian who becomes schizophrenic and takes off hitchhiking across America in a futile effort to outrun his mental illness.  \nArrives at 2026 Philadelphia Fringe Festival \, Limited Engagement\, September 18-27\, 2026 \n“As Director\, I am so excited to bring this beautiful piece to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival” – Eric Tucker\, Artistic Director\, Bedlam Theatre Co\, NYC \n“It is a privilege to be let into her world. When this raw honesty is revealed\, its gravity is gripping” – All About Solo\, United Solo Festival \n“Monologues explode like bombs in slow motion…Ms. Block’s performance was brilliant.” – Hi-Drama\, William Cataldi \n\n\n\nMEDIA KIT FOR DOWNLOAD\n\n\n\nPhiladelphia\, PA: What if you thought the funniest and saddest thing you could ever write/act would be the story of your crazy brother taken directly from his own “manifesto” about his own illness?  In Shatterproof\, a solo show written and performed by Dana Block\, that’s exactly what is going down.  Dana Block draws on a world created by her brother in cartoons\, rants and ravings\, and tells the story of their artistic Jewish family in rural Missouri\, bringing each character fully to life on stage\, including the hallucinated ones!  In this boiling pot of mental illness and art\, life is precariously balanced.  This beautifully imagined one-woman show\, directed by award-winning Artistic Director of Bedlam Theatre Co\, Eric Tucker\, is headed to an Off-Broadway debut in November\, 2026.  It is not to be missed. Shatterproof is a true story\, given voice by a sibling who knows first hand\, the heartbreak of trying to save someone who is irretrievably lost.  Shatterproof (formerly produced as “Monkey Man” ) has been called “hilarious and heart breaking.” The limited engagement will play Icebox Project Space Gallery (1400 N American St\, Philadelphia\, PA) from September 18-27\, 2026. Tickets are available now via this link. \nShatterproof\, Dana Block’s autobiographical dark comedy comes to Philadelphia for three performances on September 18\, 26\, and 27 before its anticipated NYC Showcase run. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking\, the play tells the story of a sister’s quest to help her younger brother — a gifted artist and comedian (think Robyn Williams) – whose schizophrenia sends him on the road hitchhiking for decades. Inspired by Block’s own experiences growing up in a close-knit Jewish family\, Shatterproof gives voice to the sibling experience of losing a cherished loved one to an illness whose only promise is\, it cannot be cured.   \nShatterproof shares a wildly funny portrait of an artistic Jewish family from St. Joseph\, Missouri\, before unfolding the extraordinary story of Dana’s relationship with her brother. As a teenager\, Marc’s schizophrenia leads him to hitchhike across America in an attempt to outrun his illness and find himself. Twenty years later\, Dana begins a journey of her own—to try to bring back her brother.  \nThe original material for the show is drawn from Marc’s journals\, drawings\, and writings\, and brings audiences inside both the brilliance and chaos of his mental illness. Through humor\, honesty and compassion\, the play invites audiences to laugh at Marc\, laugh with Marc\, and fall in love with Marc and his utterly mischievous personality. \nThe title Shatterproof reflects the role Dana found herself playing within her family: the person who could hold the center and the only person who had the guts to go out and to try to find him. Dana discovered that loving her brother did not mean having the power to make decisions for him — it meant learning to accept that regardless\, he had possession of his own life and that it was his right to live it as he wanted. \nAt a time when conversations about mental health have never been more urgent\, Shatterproof reminds us that behind every diagnosis is a family painfully navigating impossible choices—and that even in our darkest moments\, laughter can become an act of survival. Catch Shatterproof before its Off-Broadway run and experience this extraordinary true story. \n### \nShatterproof \nWritten by Dana Block \nPerformed by Dana Block \nDirected by Eric Tucker \nIcebox Project Space Gallery (1400 N American St\, Philadelphia\, PA) \nPerformances September 18-27\, 2026 \nTickets at FringeArts.com \nBIOS \nDana Block (Actor) is a classically trained actor and writer who has created and toured 4 original solo shows\, and developed a full-length play under the tutelage of Edward Albee\, acting Master Playwright at Road Less Traveled Theater in Buffalo\, NY\, 2010. SUMMARY:Practicing Attention—But Why?
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on themes from her bestselling 2019 book How to Do Nothing\, Jenny Odell will examine anxieties about our ability to focus and the way that the issue is often emptied of social\, political\, and spiritual content. Like anything else\, the practice of paying attention can be aimed at increased productivity for productivity’s sake—or worse\, an abstract valuing of mental “performance.” She will argue that much of modern advice regarding the practice of attention is inadequate because it misses the role of purpose\, commitment\, and love. \nA book signing will follow the lecture and Q&A. \nDrawing on themes from her bestselling 2019 book How to Do Nothing\, Jenny Odell will examine anxieties about our ability to focus and the way that the issue is often emptied of social\, political\, and spiritual content.
