SUMMARY:new heaven new earth
DESCRIPTION:Bold Afro-Centric reimagining of Antony & Cleopatra returns after sold-out Philly Theatre Week Debut \nShakespeare in Clark Park (SCP)\, in collaboration with Upstream Performance Collaborative (UPC) and Cannonball\, presents new heaven new earth\, a bold\, revisionist Afrocentric adaptation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra by multidisciplinary artist Rayne. Directed by SCP Producing Artistic Director Shamus and featuring live music by Karen Smith\, this allegorical work blends ancient history with poetic futurism\, as Cleopatra faces off against a soothsaying Crocodile on the edge of empire and asks “when peace demands war\, what will you become\, and for whom?” Following an oversold\, one-night premiere at Philly Theatre Week\, new heaven new earth continues its development with two staged readings at The Proscenium at The Drake\, running September 1-16\, 2025. \nThe reading stars a host of Barrymore Award recognized talent and Shakespeare in Clark Park alumni including Kishia Nixon as Cleopatra\, Ross Beschler as Marc Antony\, STARFIRE as Charmian & Crocodile\, Adam Howard as Octavius et al\, Dante Brattelli as Enobarbus et al\, and Katherine Perry as Octavia et al. Live percussion is performed by Karen Smith\, a 2023 Pew Fellowship recipient known for her percussion-based collaborations and leadership of The Karen Smith Experience and Sistahs Laying Down Hands. \nnew heaven new earth was commissioned by Shakespeare in Clark Park in 2024 as part of a season-long initiative to develop original works in direct conversation with Shakespeare’s text and uplift Queer\, Trans and Non-Binary voices. Rayne’s plays have been produced or developed with Primary Stages\, Theatre Exile\, Azuka Theatre\, PlayPenn\, and more\, supported by the Leeway Foundation\, Independence Foundation\, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. Shamus’s directing credits span Shakespeare in Clark Park\, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre\, the Playwrights’ Center\, Pridefest at the Tank\, and the Samuel French Off-Off-Broadway Festival. \nFor more information\, visit www.shakespeareinclarkpark.org or follow us on social media.

SUMMARY:Let's Make An Album!
DESCRIPTION:LET’S MAKE AN ALBUM! is a new immersive performance series by Philadelphia pop-punk outfit Happier Than Ever\, attempting to break down the wall between artist and audience. Join the punk trio as they lead an evening of songwriting essentials\, guiding the audience through the process of crafting a song from initial idea to the first draft. Featuring vocalist and guitarist Jaden Alvaro Gines\, bassist Charlotte Horansky\, and drummer Connor Gotham\, the band will guide the audience through traditional songwriting structure\, lyrical storytelling\, and investigate the choices that are made behind each step of the songwriting process. Through audience suggestions and collaboration\, the band will create a full length song from start to finish LIVE on stage each night\, with the audience credited as songwriters! By the end of the performance series\, the hope is to create a small album’s worth of music to be released following the completion of performances\, with the audience members being given writing credits. The goal is to erase the line between the artist and the musician\, and begin the audience’s participation in the work from the very beginning. Part performance\, part workshop\, part improv show- get your notebooks and pencils ready\, because it’s time to make an album!

SUMMARY:Pinky Promise
DESCRIPTION:Pinky Promise by Paper Doll Ensemble \nThis world-premiere production explores the nuanced emotional lives of three tweens on the precipice of adolescence\, set in the vibrant\, emotionally-charged microcosm of a summer camp in 2005. When a deep rift forms in the friendship between our ensemble Hiedi\, Miriam\, and Phoebe\, what unravels is a comedic and heartbreaking meditation on loyalty\, identity\, and growing up. At its core\, Pinky Promise is about a moment that can feel world-ending at age twelve\, and still echo decades later. \nPinky Promise is created through Paper Doll’s signature collaborative devising process\, with surreal visuals\, heightened physicality\, and a fierce comedic edge\, the piece captures the terrifying exhilaration of change—where hobby horses\, pop songs\, and the sacred power of a pinky promise collide. \nAdult performers embody their preteen characters with uncanny precision\, highlighting the tension between how we experience youth and how we remember it. In its most ambitious production to date\, Paper Doll welcomes Carly Bodnar as guest director. \nFunny\, painful\, and achingly familiar\, Pinky Promise invites audiences to revisit the formative fractures of early friendship—and ask how our earliest heartbreaks shape who we become. \nRun Time: 75 mins\nTicket Price: FREE\, PWYC Options $5+\nVenue: Plays & Players Skinner Studio\nDates: September 18\, 2025 – September 21\, 2025 \n\n\nSeptember 18\, 2025 7.00pm\nSeptember 19\, 2025 7.00pm\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 20\, 2025 2.00pm\nSeptember 20\, 2025 7.00pm\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 21\, 2025 2.00pm

SUMMARY:Body of Work: Tony Heriza
DESCRIPTION:Tony Heriza has been engaged in producing media for social change since the 1970s\, while also teaching and working with community organizations. His work has been broadcast on PBS and screened widely at film festivals. He was one of the founders of Media House\, a collective headed by Julia Reichert and Jim Klein\, activists and filmmakers who were nominated for Oscar nominations along the way for films “Union Maids” and “Seeing Red.” Tony has a B.A. from Antioch College and a Master’s degree from Rutgers University. He has taught media production at Rutgers\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and Temple University\, and served for many years as Director of Media Production for the American Friends Service Committee. \nThis Body of Work will showcase two evenings highlighting Tony’s films focusing on the power in visuals\, film\, and videos\, to tell stories that illuminate issues and provoke and incite an act of care and an advocacy for change. Harkening back to his collective filmmaking background\,d Tony’s two projects: “Facing the Wind” and the “Art of Survival”  will illustrate how those collaborative roots dictate the stories he documents. \n“I found out there is tremendous power in using visuals\, film and videos\, to tell a story\,” he said. “The video illuminates an issue\, and hopefully moves people to care\, and to act.” \nThursday\, September 18th\, 7:00 PM \nFacing the Wind (USA\, 2024\, 58 minutes) \nFacing the Wind is a love story about people with Lewy body dementia\, the spouses who care for them\, and the remarkable community where they find sustenance and support. \nFriday\, September 19th\, 7:00 PM \nThe Art of Survival (USA\, 2023\, 28 minutes) \nArt of Survival is a short documentary that captures the energy and spirit of the Kensington Storefront\, an open arts studio that for three years offered a cup of coffee\, a snack\, and a chance to make art—in the heart of Philadelphia’s drug crisis.

SUMMARY:Klorkhana: The Tyrant World Premiere of a Science Fiction Opera about a Tyrant who takes over a planet
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — “Klorkhana: The Tyrant\,” will be presented in full in a concert setting.  Both book and music are written by Kate Quinn. \nKlorkhana is the official Mind Healer of the planet of Sephro but instead of healing minds\, he corrupts them.  He projects false love into people in exchange for stealing their energies for his own use.  His favorite thing to do is rob women of their special spiritual essences that help heal minds and bodies in ways men can’t duplicate.  Klorkhana and many men of Sephro are envious of women for having certain gifts men don’t possess.  Instead of appreciating what they have\, they want what they don’t have\, at any cost.  Klorkhana soon has almost every man on planet Sephro following him\, particularly one susceptable young man named Aulio.  Together\, he and Klorkhana are determined to steal what women have\, and use it for themselves. \nOnly Coran\, Warrior Overseer and Security Chief of the entire planet\, her mate Tanna and Klorkhana’s former mate Destylla are able to form an army to stop this tyrant.  No matter what the outcome\, these rebels are determined to bring Planet Sephro back to its former glory. \nThe opera concert will take place with the Philly Fringe on Thursday and Friday\, September 18 & 19\, 2025 at 7:00 pm at The Rotunda\, 4014 Walnut Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104. \nAdmission:  Pay what you can (PWYC) Options \nDuration: Opera – approximately 1 hour in length plus a Talk Back Q & A session (1 hr) after the opera \nThis event is part of the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. \nClick https://phillyfringe.org/events/klorkhana-the-tyrant/ for more info or to RSVP. \n

SUMMARY:Philly Fringe: "BE GOOD!" WITH PAULETTE
DESCRIPTION:“BE GOOD!” WITH PAULETTE \nAn absurd character comedy show about the strangeness of good manners\, presented as part of Philly Fringe’s Cannonball Festival \nIntroducing the mildest man imaginable. Don’t ask about his black eye. \nPaulette stumbles into a theater full of the most people he’s ever seen\, and he doesn’t know whether to panic or mingle. Sporting a brown sweater and a hot-off-the-fist black eye\, he dares to approach the stage armed with nothing but an arsenal of pleasantries\, a pocketful of charm\, and a monumental fear of rejection. \nAudiences to date have described Paulette as “petite\,” “crow-like\,” and “not the sharpest\, but definitely the nicest.” With any luck\, Philly Fringe viewers will shower similar praise on his neatly combed head. \nCertified clown Daniel Maseda makes his solo debut with this unsolicited evening of giddy small talk madness that can’t help but be different every night. One thing is for certain: this show has something for anyone who just wants to scream at a polite person.

SUMMARY:Conversation + Book Launch with Tiffany E. Barber
DESCRIPTION:Join The Print Center to celebrate Tiffany E. Barber’s new publication\, Undesirability and Her Sisters: Black Women’s Visual Work and the Ethics of Representation\, published by New York University Press. Barber will discuss the inspiration behind the project and tell us more about the book. This event will be presented both in-person and on Zoom\, and is free and open to the public. \nIn the wake of contemporary art’s post-Black turn and the mainstreaming of intersectionality\, Undesirability and Her Sisters charts a new genealogy of Black women’s art that exposes the unfinished project of racial and gender empowerment in the twenty-first century. Tiffany Barber argues that Black women’s social positions at the intersection of race\, gender\, sexuality and class are inherently queer\, thus spurring unexpected aesthetic strategies that throw into high relief the ethical terrain of what it means to be Black and a woman now.
