SUMMARY:The Old Academy Players Presents Crimes of the Heart\, a Black Comedy by Beth Henley
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia\, PA — As part of its 2025-2026 Season\, The Old Academy Players is proud to present Crimes of the Heart\, written by Beth Henley\, American playwright\, screenwriter\, and actress.  The Old Academy Players’ 548th production will run September 12-28\, 2025; with Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 pm and three Sunday matinées\, September 14th\, 21st and 28th at 2:00 pm. It is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service\, Inc. \nHenley completed Crimes of the Heart in 1978 and submitted it to several regional theatres without success. Unbeknownst to her\, a friend entered it in the Great American Play Contest at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The play was first performed in February 1979 at the Actors Theatre Louisville and it was named co-winner of the contest. The play continued to be developed\, with productions in Los Gatos\, St. Louis\, and Baltimore at the Centre Stage Theatre. \nThe Manhattan Theatre Club produced the play Off-Broadway at Stage 73\, from December 9\, 1980\, to January 11\, 1981\, for 35 sold-out performances. The play opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on November 4\, 1981\, and closed on February 13\, 1983\, after 535 performances and 13 previews. \nCrimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama\, the 1981 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play\, and a nomination for a Tony Award. Henley’s screenplay for Crimes of the Heart was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. \nReviews indicated: \n“While this play overflows with infectious high spirits\, it is also\, unmistakably\, the tale of a very troubled family. Such is Miss Henley’s prodigious talent that she can serve us pain as though it were a piece of cake.” —The New York Times. \n“It has heart\, wit and a surprisingly zany passion that must carry all before it…it would certainly be a crime for anyone interested in the theatre not to see this play.” —New York Post \n“From time to time a play comes along that restores one’s faith in our theatre…” —New York Magazine. \nSynopsis: The tragicomedy relates the story of the three Magrath sisters\, Meg\, Babe\, and Lenny\, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst\, Mississippi\, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. SUMMARY:Old Academy Players presents Disenchanted!
DESCRIPTION:Disenchanted! By Dennis T. Giacino\nDirected by Annie Hnatko \nApril 25th\, 26th; May 2nd\, 3rd\, 4th\, 9th\, 10th\, 11th\, 2025\nFriday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.\, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. \nPoison apples and lost slippers are just the beginning. The original storybook heroines are none-too-happy with the way they’ve been portrayed in today’s pop culture\, so they’ve tossed their tiaras and have come to life to set the record straight. Forget the princesses you think you know — these royal renegades are here to comically belt out the truth. Received an “Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Outer Critics Circle Awards) and a “Best New Off-Broadway Musical” nomination (Off-Broadway Alliance). \nContent Warning: Contains adult language and content.

SUMMARY:The Mother
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati\, Ohio based Chicana performance artist Claudia Pompeya is reaching the culmination of a three year effort as she premieres her first solo alternative clown show\, THE MOTHER\, at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine Street\, Philadelphia)\, running for a limited engagement September 13 through 15\, 2025. The piece\, which examines the ‘maternal’ archetype via absurd and playful chaos\, is part of the Cannonball Festival 2025 lineup\, a Philadelphia Fringe Festival hub\, dedicated to risk-taking independent art and community conversation. Opening night for press is Sunday\, September 14 at 3:30 pm. \nClaudia Pompeya\, writer and performer of THE MOTHER says: “So many of us carry a buried grief we can’t quite name. THE MOTHER meets that pain with humor\, chaos\, and care. Five years ago at FringeArts’ Blue Heaven\, I was electrified by the alt comedy and clown I saw there. To now bring my own dreamlike work here feels both unreal and deeply honoring\, this is where audiences expect the unexpected.” \nA strange solo clown show written and performed by multi-hyphen performance artist Claudia Pompeya\, THE MOTHER\, via absurdist clowning and audience interaction\, veils a fierce love for those never truly mothered. It creates a playful space for people to feel seen and safe enough to laugh at their own parental wounds. \nTickets to THE MOTHER are currently on sale by visiting https://phillyfringe.org/events/the-mother/. General admission is $25; pay-what-you-can tickets start at $5. More information on Claudia Pompeya can be found at claudiapompoms.com\, and via Instagram at https://instagram.com/claudiapompoms.
