SUMMARY:Public Archaeology at Newlin Grist Mill
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nExcavations this season are planned for the Trimble farm complex in the Historic Area. The Trimble family built their house on the property adjoining the Mill in 1739 and\, over time\, built a whole complex of structures to support the operations of their household and farm. By conducting archaeological studies in the area around the Trimble House\, the Newlin Grist Mill staff hopes to learn more about the people who lived and worked there in the 18th\, 19th\, and early 20th centuries. \nScheduled 2025 Public Archaeology Days:\nMarch 15\nApril 19\nMay 17\nJune 21\nJuly 19\nOctober 18 – International Archaeology Day \n10am-3pm. Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend.

SUMMARY:Book signing with LindoYes\, author of new graphic novel PawnShop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a signing event with poet and author LindoYes for the release of his new graphic novel PawnShop. \nAbout the book\nPawnShop is an afro-futurist graphic novel that explores Black resistance\, identity\, and culture while emphasizing the importance of emotional regulation and public safety. Expanding on the worlds created in his poetry\, Lindo explores the lives of everyday folx living in a re-imagined Philadelphia where healthcare is universal and emotional equity is regulated by two government entities: Emojis and Cupids. Illustrated by fellow Philadelphia poet and artist\, Jovan McKoy\, and colored by Philadelphia based artist\, Jaz Malone\, PawnShop is a Philly inspired and Philly made love letter to the potential of a better world and the complex relationships we will still have to navigate no matter what utopia we potentially create.

SUMMARY:The Second Place Race
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the annual 2nd Place Race. The object is simple: collect just enough points – puzzles\, challenges\, games\, trading and tricking – to finish in second place! Also\, no running required! Remember: winning is more important than coming in first! \nThe hunt begins at Quig’s (1714 Delancey Street (Plays & Players\, third floor)). Doors open right at 5pm\, so teams (can be any size) should arrive 5:00pm or after. There will be a sign to ring the bell so that you can get buzzed in (then amble up to the top floor). You’ll get your info packet and then the fun starts immediately! Later\, teams travel a short distance to Devil’s Alley before finishing at City Tap Logan Square. \nAs teams solve puzzles/challenges and play games\, they begin to collect points (that can later be traded with other teams). Keep checking the leader board and see if your team can land in second place. At the end of the event (around 9:30ish) the team that ends up in second place wins!! \nSo\, grab a partner or two or more & sign up; then on the night of the hunt be sure to dress for the weather (you will be outside between bars!) & get ready to go for silver! The event is open to everyone\, but it is suggested that all team members be over 21 (all the indoor stops are bars). \nRequired items (per team): \n  \nPen or pencil \nBlack (or dark) Sharpie \nHighlighter \nSomething to write on \nFlashlight \nDevice capable of receiving text messages \nDevice capable of searching the Web \nInstalled free QR Code app on smartphone \nFunds for food\, drink & stuff \nSee past 2nd Place Races here: https://www.clubedventures.com/rallye/2PRace/2pr.htm \nThis year the hunt will benefit Paper Doll Ensemble – a feminist theatre collective whose original plays combine comedy\, dance\, theatre\, and visual art to create captivating worlds with character-driven narratives. Their “tragicomedy” style illuminates the absurdity of everyday life and our political climate. Since their inception in 2017\, PDE has been featured at Plays & Players Theatre\, the Philly Fringe Festival\, Alabama International Fringe\, and “East to Edinburgh” with 59E59 Theaters in New York. SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Grim(m) and Glorious Story of Children's Lit
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Grim(m) and Glorious Story of Children’s Lit\,” on the history of tales that stick with us well into adulthood\, with Melissa Jensen\, award-winning lecturer in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania and scholar of Children’s Literature\, the Gothic\, and adolescence in media and society. \nJust about every single one of us can quickly invoke a favorite or personally influential children’s book. We can finish nursery rhyme lines and almost instinctively sing along with songs from countless Disney films. But what do we really know about the body of literature that played such a profound role in shaping our young minds? \nJoin Children’s Literature scholar and author Melissa Jensen for a talk that will have you thinking about the beloved books of your formative years in an entirely new way. \nShe will explore the evolution and convolution of Children’s Literature from the 17th to 21st centuries\, discussing the beloved\, the famous\, and the just plain odd. She’ll help you understand why these books are not just an integral part of the developmental fabric of our youth\, but also have critical literary\, scholarly\, and cultural importance. \nHer talk will lean into more than three centuries of grim(m) messaging in books for children\, with takeaways from “Do good or get dead” to “Do bad and get dead” to “Do good and get dead anyway.” She’ll discuss whether plunking death front and center in the literature makes perfect sense or is counterintuitive. \nWe’ll discuss beginnings\, endings\, and countless other elements that determine the value of “kidlit.” We’ll look at how far Disney’s Ariel is from Andersen’s original Little Mermaid\, and how that difference turns a whole new lens on the meaning of “happily ever after.” \nAmong the questions we’ll tackle: Is there a value in contemporary kids knowing centuries-old nursery rhymes involving babies falling out of trees? Why does it work that Jensen’s all-time favorite novel—not just children’s novel\, but novel of any sort—begins with “Where’s Papa going with that ax?” (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: From an Arthur Rackham illustration of the Brothers Grimm’s “Hansel and Gretel” as published by Dutton and Company in 1920 (New York Public Library / The Internet Archive).
