SUMMARY:The Arts League's Second Annual Artist Convening- Grounded: Making & Teaching in the Now
DESCRIPTION:How do we as artists and makers address polarizing topics in our studio practice and classroom spaces? What does a socially engaged art practice or curriculum look like in the present day? This weekend long convening is an opportunity to connect meaningfully with other artists and arts educators interested in finding actionable means of workshopping their practice to be relevant in the here and now. Attendees will receive a thoughtfully curated resource toolkit\, an opportunity to workshop ideas and syllabi with real-time feedback from local experts and peers\, and special tours of new exhibitions at The Arts League and beyond. \nAll event proceeds will support TAL’s arts & community programs. \nThe Schedule \nConvening\nSaturday\, August 10\, 2024\, 10 AM – 5 PM \nSpecial Tours & Making\nSunday\, August 11\, 2024\, 1 PM – 4 PM

SUMMARY:The LOX
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1999\, the celebrated Yonkers Rap trio the LOX found themselves in a fight for freedom. Disappointed with the direction of their career on Bad Boy\, the group wanted to be released from their contract in order to join the newly formed Ruff Ryders/ Interscope label. The Ruff Ryders had always served as the Lox’s managers and the group felt like the new Double R label could better represent the hardcore sensibilities which they expressed in their rhymes. Bad Boy was known for its radio friendly dance hits and high priced videos\, while the LOX were quickly establishing themselves as Hip-Hop’s rawest group. The identities clashed\, the LOX just didn’t feel comfortable in the shiny suits. “We just needed to be with a rougher label” says Sheek. “A harder label that fit our image.”\nThe LOX gained national exposure in 1997 with their powerful multi-platinum tribute to the Notorious BIG\, We’ll Always love Big Poppa. The song which celebrated the life of the slain superstar\, captured Biggie’s essence and thrust the LOX into the media spotlight as a group to watch out for. The trio later appeared on a multitude of hits\, including Puffy’s Benjamins\, which the LOX wrote\, Mase’s 24 Hours to Live\, and Mariah Carey’s Honey. The group’s debut album Money Power & Respect went platinum and helped establish the LOX as an important voice in Hip-Hop music. \nSo who are the Real LOX? The Real Lox are authentic ghetto story-tellers\, whose rhymes are derived from the pain\, anger\, lust and love which exist in the hearts of men. The Real LOX are the embodiment of Hip-Hop’s origin as the voice of a disparate people. \nWe are the Streets stands to be one of the most important albums of the millenium because it was born out of a movement. A call was put out to the streets\, to help give the LOX back their voice and save Hip-Hop from its downward spiral of self indulgence. The streets responded ferociously and the LOX are finally free. This album is a testament to the power of the Hip-Hop fans who supported the group through their difficult times. They are the reason that the Real LOX have returned. Music will never be the same.

SUMMARY:August Volunteer Orientation
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer orientation will continue this month at Pearl S. Buck International. We currently have a range of volunteer opportunities that offer many ways for you to make a difference in your local community. Register for Volunteer Orientation to learn how you can join a special group of men and women volunteers who advance the humanitarian\, cross-cultural\, and educational mission and impact of Pearl S. Buck International. Orientation will be held at Pearl S. Buck International\, 520 Dublin Road\, Perkasie\, PA on Thursday\, August 15\, 2024 at 1 pm. \nThe Volunteer Orientation Session includes learning more about the mission of our organization\, touring the National Historic Landmark property\, and discovering how you can share your special talents with a nonprofit organization that has an inspiring six decade-long legacy of bridging cultures and changing lives in your community and across the globe. \nVolunteers at Pearl S. Buck International choose from tasks as varied as serving as a tour docent or facilitator for visitors to the National Historic Landmark Pearl S. Buck House museum\, helping with the archival collection\, working in the International Gift Shop\, processing letters from sponsored children\, or assisting with special events such as the Living the Legacy Breakfast. Volunteers are also invited to bring their special talents to the organization through opportunities such as a writer’s guild\, book discussion groups\, speaking opportunities\, and more. At this time\, we are most in need of tour facilitators and docents as well as volunteers to assist with curatorial work\, but if you discover a passion for our work and mission\, we will find a place for you and would love to have you! 2024 is the 60th anniversary of Pearl S. Buck International so now is the perfect time to become a part of the Pearl S. Buck legacy. \nFor more information on volunteering with Pearl S. Buck International\, visit https://pearlsbuck.org/support-us/volunteer/. Our orientation schedule for the entire year can be found there – if you can’t make it this month\, we welcome you at one of our other sessions!
