SUMMARY:Private Finance\, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
DESCRIPTION:Banks may be private\, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.\nPrivate Finance\, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history\, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation. \nWharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks\, con artists posing as government examiners\, bribes paid in oyster dinners\, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation\, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed\, strained\, but largely functional. \nIn this talk\, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today. \nThis event will be held in room 131/132 on the first floor of the Heim Center.

SUMMARY:LizaBanks Headlining Helium Comedy Club
DESCRIPTION:LizaBanks Campagna is building an entirely new lane in the creator economy\, one where comedy\, culture\, and civic curiosity collide. In 2025\, she emerged as one of the most original voices reshaping how audiences engage with cities\, institutions\, and public life\, proving that education and entertainment do not just coexist\, they thrive together. \nA stand-up comedian\, LizaBanks has applied her comedic instincts to an unexpected arena\, tourism and cultural education. As a New York City tour guide leading sold out experiences at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Grand Central Terminal\, she has transformed traditional sightseeing into immersive\, personality driven storytelling. Her tours feel less like lectures and more like live performances\, attracting audiences who may never have stepped inside a museum otherwise. In the process\, she is modernizing tourism for a social first generation and demonstrating how creators can bring legacy institutions into the digital age. \nOnline\, LizaBanks extends that same sensibility through content that blends humor\, historical context\, and sharp social observation. In 2025\, she expanded her platform into civic conversation\, interviewing political figures including Zohran Mamdani and engaging audiences around issues like public transit and accessibility with clarity and curiosity. She frequently collaborates with Overheard\, including hosting its Happy Hour series\, and facilitating red carpet interviews. Last year\, LizaBanks was profiled in The Cut and appeared on The Today Show with Al Roker\, signaling her crossover from digital creator to broader cultural figure.

SUMMARY:World Wish Day - Make-A-Wish & Famous 4th Street Cookie
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of World Wish Day (April 29) and World Wish Month (all of April)\, Make-A-Wish® Philadelphia\, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley is partnering with Philly’s Famous 4th Street Cookie Company to spotlight a special\, limited-time treat created by local wish kid Blakelyn. \nFrom 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on April 29\, Make-A-Wish staff and volunteers will be onsite at Reading Terminal Market handing out cookie samples in celebration of the impact of wishes for children facing critical illnesses. \nBlakelyn\, a 12-year-old aspiring baker\, was diagnosed in first grade with von Hippel-Lindau disease\, a rare condition that causes tumors. Through her love of baking\, she found creativity\, calm\, and confidence. When it came time to make her wish\, Blakelyn chose to bring her passion to life through baking—and even competition. With support from the team at Famous 4th Street Cookie Company\, she created her now-signature S’mores Cookie\, inspired by nostalgic campfire flavors. \nThroughout April\, proceeds from every S’mores Cookie sold help to support Make-A-Wish\, helping grant life-changing wishes for other children in the region. The cookie is available in-store and online\, individually or as part of a Make-A-Wish Cookie Box.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Neanderthals Among Us
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Neanderthals Among Us\,” on the genetic legacy of our ancestors’ pairings with Homo neanderthalensis and what such genes tell us about prehistoric life\, with Alexander Platt\, evolutionary geneticist and senior research scientist at University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. \n“Extinction” is a slippery word. Neanderthals went extinct tens of thousands of years ago\, yet in a sense they’re more genetically present on Earth than ever given all of the markers of Neanderthal ancestry found mixed in the genes of the eight billion Homo sapiens around today. Moreover\, Neanderthals aren’t the only type of humans whose extinctions weren’t the end of the line. \nCome to Philadelphia’s Black Squirrel Club to learn about fascinating research on the relationship between Neanderthals and modern humans being done by the University of Pennsylvania’s Tishkoff Lab. That lab\, broadly devoted to studying genetic variation in global populations\, generated worldwide headlines in February with a study finding that most of our Neanderthal ancestry appears to come from the pairing of male Neanderthals with Homo sapiens females \nDr. Alexander Platt\, lead co-author of the recent study\, will talk about what we know about human-Neanderthal interactions and the major questions that have yet to be answered. \nYou’ll learn how fossil evidence helps us know where and when individuals from various early human groups lived\, while anatomical similarities between them let us speculate about their respective migration histories and their relationships. Genetic evidence\, from both modern humans and samples of ancient DNA\, offers us fresh insights into the connections between some of them. \nDr. Platt will talk about how modern humans and Neanderthals shared a common ancestor over 500\,000 years ago. They then spent hundreds of thousands of years evolving on separate continents\, only to encounter each other repeatedly over the last 250\,000 years\, during which their interactions and interbreeding left each carrying a complex set of genetic relics of the other. \nExactly how and why such pairings took place is one of the key mysteries that Dr. Platt and his colleagues are working to solve. To get a better sense of how sex differences shaped those interactions\, the researchers contrast genetic diversity in non-sex chromosomes with genetic diversity in the X chromosome\, more reflective of the history of women than men. \nYou’ll emerge from the talk with a much better understanding of how breakthroughs in genetics are contributing to our understanding of human evolution\, as well as a recognition that our own genetic makeup tells us about our roots in prehistory. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A reconstruction of a Neanderthal man on display at the Neanderthal Museum in Mettman\, Germany (Neanderthal Museum / Wikimedia Commons).

SUMMARY:Ornamental Plants in Philadelphia Gardens in the Early 1700s
DESCRIPTION:Before 1750\, Philadelphia gardens were not just kitchen gardens\, they also cultivated lots of ornamental plants\, grown for their beauty\, colors\, scent\, and to make nature prints as a form of botanical art. Many of these plants were imported from Europe\, but some were native to the Pennsylvania region. There were gardens in Germantown and at Stenton (James Logan’s estate in north Philadelphia) that cultivated and celebrated vibrant ornamental plants like anemones\, tulips\, daffodils\, roses\, lilies\, columbines\, Polianthes tuberosa\, violets\, and African\, French and European marigolds. \nJoin historian Miranda Mote for a lecture that tells a story of beautiful\, ornamental plants in colonial Philadelphia gardens\, before 1750. \nMiranda Mote\, PhD is a historian\, artist\, and educator based in Philadelphia and the 2023-24 Garden Club of America / Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize\, Landscape Architecture Fellow. She teaches history and design\, works with children in K-12 schools and public venues\, designs teaching games for children\, and is currently writing an arts focused literacy and botany curriculum of lessons designed especially for children that live in urban environments.  She established Botanography in 2022 as a non-profit to directly serve students and families in Philadelphia County and believes that every school should have a garden classroom where students can connect with plants every day. \nThis program can be attended in the Skyline Room on Parkway Central’s Fourth Floor. No registration required. Join us earlier in the afternoon for a garden inspired children’s storytime and activity. Learn more here.

SUMMARY:Curtis Opera Theatre Presents: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
DESCRIPTION:Magic and mischief intertwine in Benjamin Britten’s enchanting adaptation of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Critically acclaimed director Sarah Ina Meyers and dynamic international conductor Vinay Parameswaran lead a dazzling cast of young opera stars and members of Curtis Symphony Orchestra in this spellbinding production. Prepare to be transported to a twilight world where feuding fairies meddle with mortals\, hearts are led astray\, and the surreal world of dreams blurs the edges of reality. \nIn the depths of a dark forest outside Athens\, the fairy king Oberon and his queen\, Tytania\, clash in a battle of wits and wills as a group of impulsive lovers and an unsuspecting band of amateur actors wander into their moonlit realm. Seizing the opportunity to manipulate fate\, Oberon entrusts the impish sprite Puck to squeeze the juice of a mystic flower into the eyes of his queen and the quarreling lovers\, sparking a night of romantic chaos and surprising transformations. \nBENJAMIN BRITTEN\, music\nPETER PEARS\, libretto\nBased on the play by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE \nPlease note programs and artists are subject to change.

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

DESCRIPTION:May 1st | 6–9PM \n8127 Germantown Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA\nFree parking after 6PM \nThis First Friday\, we’re bringing together two distinct but connected bodies of work—photography by Allan Ali and a focused presentation of abstract works by EZV. \nAllan Ali’s black-and-white photographs reflect on life as a series of paths—some shared\, others walked alone. Many of these images were created in moments of solitude\, where observation becomes sharper and the world feels both expansive and deeply personal. Rooted in memory and influenced by his family’s creative legacy\, his work carries a quiet sense of connection across time. \nIn a separate gallery space\, EZV’s abstract works explore the space between what we see and what we feel. Drawing from their environment\, the work layers form\, texture\, and metaphor to translate lived experience into something more internal—where memory\, identity\, and emotion intersect. \nTogether\, the exhibition moves between observation and interpretation—offering two ways of seeing the world\, side by side. \nOriginal Art for Real People \nCome through! \n
