SUMMARY:Mayor's Masked Ball Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The United Negro College Fund Philadelphia is holding its 2026 Mayor’s Masked Ball fundraiser and awards ceremony — UNCF’s signature event\, helping to support these life-changing scholarship efforts. It will be a night to shine. Hosted by UNCF Philadelphia and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker\, the annual event will be Saturday\, March 21\, 2026 at the Downtown Marriott Hotel\, 12th & Market streets\, in Center City Philadelphia\, at 7 p.m. EST (Doors open at 6 p.m. EST). Five community and corporate difference-makers will be the 2026 Mayor’s Masked Award recipients: Cheryl McKissack Daniel\, President & CEO of McKissack & McKissack\, who will be honored with the Individual Champion Award; the Exelon Corporation will receive the Corporate Champion Award\, and The Michael Ann and Saquon Barkley Foundation will be the beneficiaries of the Community Support Champion Award. Joseph Hill\, Managing Director of Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies\, will receive the Advancing Young Leadership Award (ATLA)\, and legendary hip-hop icons Philadelphia’s The Roots will be honored with a special Semiquincentennial Legacy Award to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary and signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The fun-filled evening will feature a live auction with exclusive items and experiences\, a silent auction\, and raffle with coveted prizes. Attendees will don their finest fancy show-stopping masks and formal wear for a night of glitz\, glitter\, glamour and philanthropy to support the UNCF’s mission to provide educational opportunities for college students in need. Be part of an evening of elegance and excitement while making a meaningful impact in the community. Over the years\, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion to assist more than 550\,000 students paving a promising future.  UNCF awards more than 11\,000 students scholarships\, valued over $62 million\, each year. They provide financial support to 37 historically Black colleges and universities\, as the nation’s leading advocate for  minority-education and community engagement.  Beyond the numbers are real human stories and faces behind the Masked Ball. Most are first-generation college students who are ambitious but come from struggling households with annual incomes less than $45\,000. UNCF gives them an opportunity to realize their full potential. Since 1944\, UNCF has assisted students to pursue their educational aspirations while supporting private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with critical operational funding. The Mayor’s Masked Ball is hosted by UNCF in more than 20 cities nationwide and is the organization’s chief fundraiser. In Philadelphia\, the event has raised nearly $9 million\, since its inception. Events\, such as this\, assist UNCF nationally in supporting its students and schools. In 2024\, the Philadelphia Office awarded 210 scholarships to students residing or attending schools in the area\, totaling $1.9 million. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and her administration are excited about its third year of hosting the event. The goal is to exceed the 2025 fundraising effort for this event\, which was $775\,000.

SUMMARY:Deep Cuts from the Balkan Polyphonic Singing Repertoire with Eva Salina
DESCRIPTION:This 3-hour public workshop is designed as an accessible yet immersive exploration of the breadth and depth of polyphonic harmonies from the Balkan Region. We start with simple two-voice songs from Serbia and Croatia\, move into the transportive polyphony of Southern Albania\, and end with the newer\, yet still traditional\, 3-part folk arrangements of the Bulgarian Women’s Choirs. Through the unfolding of an afternoon\, together we will explore a variety of textures\, feelings\, and languages in these respective cultures\, while discussing their larger socio-historical contexts and the various kinds of harmony they employ. All are welcome – curiosity and active listening are the only requirements for participation. Come and make friends with some new old songs! \nSee live performances and learn more about Eva Salina through her website!

SUMMARY:South Africa vs France: The Wine Class
DESCRIPTION:The first South African wines we tasted came shortly after the fall of apartheid. Even then\, the potential was obvious—ancient soils\, a Mediterranean climate\, high elevations\, and a wealth of old vines. A rare combination in any winegrowing region. But it wasn’t until around 2010 that that potential truly began to take root. Today\, names like Swartland\, Walker Bay\, and Paarl should be on every wine lover’s radar. \nIn this class\, we pit some of our top picks from South Africa against the classics of France! Let’s see how this up-and-coming wine region holds up to the most famous wine country in the world!

SUMMARY:Germanic Wines: Austria\, Germany\, and Beyond!
DESCRIPTION:Step off the beaten path and into the heart of Central Europe’s most compelling wine regions. In this class\, we’ll dive deep into the wines of Austria\, Switzerland\, and Germany—three countries that share more than a linguistic root. Their vineyards are shaped by ancient rivers\, steep hillsides\, and centuries of cultural exchange. \nSwiss wines remain elusive outside their borders\, yet insiders know: these high-altitude bottles offer purity and precision like few others. Austrian wines are a study in extremes—blazing acidity\, bold reds\, and whites with structure and soul. And then there’s Germany. Revered for Riesling\, yes—but there’s far more to discover beneath the surface. \nThis isn’t just a tasting—it’s a reeducation. Most Americans rarely get access to these wines. In this class\, you will. Join us and see why sommeliers\, collectors\, and wine scholars are obsessed with the Germanic wine world.

SUMMARY:Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Yannick Leads Mahler & Dawson
DESCRIPTION:Echoes of Legacy in Symphony and Song. \nJoin Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Grammy award winner Yannick Nézet-Séguin for an evening of powerful musical storytelling. The program features William L. Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony\, a groundbreaking 1934 masterpiece that blends African American spirituals with classical symphonic traditions. Premiered by Leopold Stokowski and The Philadelphia Orchestra\, the work is celebrated for its stirring melodies and rhythmic vitality. \nAlso featured is the sweeping drama of Richard Wagner’s Rienzi Overture\, led by Yoann Combémorel\, Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow and orchestral songs from Gustav Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn)\, performed with rising stars from Curtis Opera Theatre. Drawing from 19th-century German folk poetry\, Mahler’s settings transform simple tales into vivid musical portraits—by turns whimsical\, poignant\, and profound. These evocative songs capture the Romantic spirit in full force\, offering a compelling journey through love\, loss\, and the fantastical. \nPlease note programs and artists are subject to change. \nWAGNER \nRienzi Overture \nAlma MAHLER \nSelections from Fünf Lieder \n“Laue Sommernacht”\n“Bei dir ist es traut” \nNikan Kanate\, soprano \nGustav MAHLER \nSelections from Des Knaben Wunderhorn \n“Lob des hohen Verstands”\n“Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen”\n“Urlicht”\n“Revelge”\n“Verlorene Müh” \nCarlyle Quinn\, mezzo-soprano\nMaisy Parker\, mezzo-soprano\nLandry Allen\, tenor\nEmilio Vasquez\, baritone \nDAWSON \nNegro Folk Symphony
