SUMMARY:Philly Bakes A Book: Dessert Person
DESCRIPTION:Calling all baking and dessert lovers! Philly Bakes A Book is a baking club where each month we pick a different baking book and bake recipes from that book that we bring to share while we meet new people. This month we are baking from Claire Saffitz’s Dessert Person. Claire Saffitz is a food writer and chef. This baking book is full of more than 100 recipes ranging from simple loaf cakes and cookies to fruit tarts and towering layer cakes. Even if you are new to baking there are a lot of approachable recipes. “There are no ‘just cooks’ out there\, only bakers who haven’t yet been converted. I am a dessert person\, and we are all dessert people.” — Claire Saffitz. Follow @phillycooksabook on Instagram for more event updates!

SUMMARY:Mayor's Masked Ball Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The United Negro College Fund Philadelphia is holding its 2026 Mayor’s Masked Ball fundraiser and awards ceremony — UNCF’s signature event\, helping to support these life-changing scholarship efforts. It will be a night to shine. Hosted by UNCF Philadelphia and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker\, the annual event will be Saturday\, March 21\, 2026 at the Downtown Marriott Hotel\, 12th & Market streets\, in Center City Philadelphia\, at 7 p.m. EST (Doors open at 6 p.m. EST). Five community and corporate difference-makers will be the 2026 Mayor’s Masked Award recipients: Cheryl McKissack Daniel\, President & CEO of McKissack & McKissack\, who will be honored with the Individual Champion Award; the Exelon Corporation will receive the Corporate Champion Award\, and The Michael Ann and Saquon Barkley Foundation will be the beneficiaries of the Community Support Champion Award. Joseph Hill\, Managing Director of Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies\, will receive the Advancing Young Leadership Award (ATLA)\, and legendary hip-hop icons Philadelphia’s The Roots will be honored with a special Semiquincentennial Legacy Award to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary and signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The fun-filled evening will feature a live auction with exclusive items and experiences\, a silent auction\, and raffle with coveted prizes. Attendees will don their finest fancy show-stopping masks and formal wear for a night of glitz\, glitter\, glamour and philanthropy to support the UNCF’s mission to provide educational opportunities for college students in need. Be part of an evening of elegance and excitement while making a meaningful impact in the community. Over the years\, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion to assist more than 550\,000 students paving a promising future.  UNCF awards more than 11\,000 students scholarships\, valued over $62 million\, each year. They provide financial support to 37 historically Black colleges and universities\, as the nation’s leading advocate for  minority-education and community engagement.  Beyond the numbers are real human stories and faces behind the Masked Ball. Most are first-generation college students who are ambitious but come from struggling households with annual incomes less than $45\,000. UNCF gives them an opportunity to realize their full potential. Since 1944\, UNCF has assisted students to pursue their educational aspirations while supporting private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with critical operational funding. The Mayor’s Masked Ball is hosted by UNCF in more than 20 cities nationwide and is the organization’s chief fundraiser. In Philadelphia\, the event has raised nearly $9 million\, since its inception. Events\, such as this\, assist UNCF nationally in supporting its students and schools. In 2024\, the Philadelphia Office awarded 210 scholarships to students residing or attending schools in the area\, totaling $1.9 million. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and her administration are excited about its third year of hosting the event. The goal is to exceed the 2025 fundraising effort for this event\, which was $775\,000.

SUMMARY:Deep Cuts from the Balkan Polyphonic Singing Repertoire with Eva Salina
DESCRIPTION:This 3-hour public workshop is designed as an accessible yet immersive exploration of the breadth and depth of polyphonic harmonies from the Balkan Region. Through the unfolding of an afternoon\, together we will explore a variety of textures\, feelings\, and languages in these respective cultures\, while discussing their larger socio-historical contexts and the various kinds of harmony they employ.
