SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more\, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd. \nThis exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2\, 2026 through January 2\, 2027.

SUMMARY:Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Before movements had hashtags\, before conversations moved online\, women gathered in living rooms\, community centers\, and rec halls to tell the truth about their lives. Set in a small-town Ohio rec center in the early 1970s\, Liberation follows a group of women who come together for a consciousness-raising meeting—unsure what to expect\, but certain they need one another. As stories unfold about work\, marriage\, motherhood\, race\, desire\, and ambition\, the room becomes a place of courage\, laughter\, conflict\, and possibility. \nMoving between past and present\, the play asks what those gatherings made possible—and what they left unfinished. What does freedom really look like? Who gets to claim it? And what do we inherit from the generations who came before us? Funny\, intimate\, and deeply human\, Liberation reminds us that change begins when people come together. This is where stories are shared. This is where ideas are challenged. This is where we gather.

SUMMARY:Priority Hoarding: A Retrospectacle
DESCRIPTION:“Where our baggage is yours!” \nWelcome to the Bearded Ladies’ Hairport\, an interactive installation & performance series built on 16-years of accumulated baggage from a queer cabaret company devoted to art\, care\, mess\, and community. While you’re waiting for a flight that may never take off\, unpack your baggage and rifle through some of ours. You may recognize something as your own\, or find something you never knew you were carrying. \nMade for anyone who has ever lost a bag\, gotten stuck\, or missed a (metaphoric) flight\, this trans(formational) installation asks: how do you know it’s time to move on when you don’t know where you’re going? \nProduced by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret\nPart of FringeArt’s 2026 Festival & Collective Futures \nInstallation on view September 10-December 20\, 2026\nat The Hairport | 444 N 3rd Street\, Philadelphia PA 19123 \nInstallation hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday & Friday 4-9PM | Last timed entry at 8:15PM\nSaturday & Sunday 11AM-3PM| Last timed entry at 2:15PM \nLive events at The Hairport | Saturdays at 8PM \nThe Hairport is an interactive\, immersive installation filled with costumes\, cardboard props\, and other ephemera from the Bearded Ladies Cabaret’s 16-year performance history. Visitors will make their way through a sprawling multi-room space made to look like a fantastical\, metaphorical “airport”. Visitors will be invited to interact with components of the installation and may encounter docents in guiding roles. The experience will culminate in a “lounge” space full of “Bearded baggage” which will also serve as the performance site for the Now Hoarding: In-Flight Entertainment live event series. \nIt will take visitors approximately 60-75 minutes to view the entirety of the Priority Hoarding installation. Groups of 6 will enter the installation\, at 15-minute timed entry intervals. An opportunity to ride a Surrey bike is offered but not required.

SUMMARY:Out of the Darkness Walk
DESCRIPTION:The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) of Greater Philadelphia hosts its annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk\, raising funds and awareness for suicide prevention and pushing back on the stigma that keeps people from asking for help. \nSurvivors of loss\, people with lived experience\, families\, friends\, and allies come together with a shared purpose: to save lives. Registration is free. \nThousands of walkers participate in the Honor Bead Ceremony\, the emotional heart of the walk. Walkers choose beads in colors that tell their story: white for a child\, red for a spouse or partner\, gold for a parent\, orange for a sibling\, purple for a relative or friend\, green for their own struggle\, teal for someone they love who is struggling\, and blue for everyone there to support the cause. As people share the names and stories behind their beads\, the crowd becomes a field of color\, and grief that is usually carried alone becomes something everyone can see and share. \nVIBE: Live band\, food trucks\, and Paws for Prevention area\, where four-legged friends are welcome and encouraged. \nHealing and Support Tent offers a place to sit\, talk\, or just breathe\, and mental health resources are on hand throughout the day. The walk is made possible with support from Presenting Sponsor Rosenberg & Parker Surety. \nSuicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. To prevent suicide\, we need to\nunderstand it first. Funds raised at the Out of the Darkness Greater Philadelphia Walk directly supporting AFSP’s mission of saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide through research\, advocacy efforts\, and educational programs in schools\, workplaces\, and communities across PA. www.afsp.org/philadelphia

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli
