SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania Presents The Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1800s
DESCRIPTION:How has the makeup of who is an American changed since the American Revolution? How have the people in that changing face of America continuously reinvigorated and reasserted the founding ideals of the country? By examining the documents left by our ancestors in the time leading up to America’s 100th birthday\, this display will ask those questions of their descendants. This exhibit draws on collections at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It will be curated in partnership with ethnic and genealogical societies that seek to connect Americans to their ancestors through research\, programs\, and networking opportunities. \nBy the time of the nation’s Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876\, enormous waves of German and Irish immigrants had arrived in Pennsylvania\, and significant migrations of free and enslaved people of African descent had moved from the South\, using the Underground Railroad and following Emancipation during and after the Civil War. What do the records of their lives suggest about how they saw their roles as Americans and as newly arrived Pennsylvanians?

SUMMARY:Second Thursday Gallery Night
DESCRIPTION:Join The Clay Studio for Second Thursday to view Our Community\, an open-call exhibition featuring works by students\, staff\, interns\, alumni\, and associate resident & teaching artists. The features encompass what inspires the artists\, including global cultures\, traditional techniques\, 3D printing\, slip casting\, installation art\, humor\, and political activism. Our Community is a wonderful opportunity to meet other people and learn about different forms of art! \nThere will also be a reception for ceramic artist Lauren Sandler’s new exhibition\, The Shape We Hold. The exhibition is an inquiry into the ways we are shaped\, and the ways we shape. Sandler’s practice utilizes regional materials and considers the layered and complex history of clay as a place to unearth stories\, particularly those that have been erased\, distorted\, or rewritten. Through contextual re-framing\, default narratives dissolve\, enacting agency and an embodied knowledge of the ways we are shaped\, and in turn\, our potential to shape. The Shape We Hold and Our Community are on display in the Jill Bonovitz through March 29.

SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner: Growing Old in the Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nPrimatologist Ben Finkel explores what elderhood means for chimpanzees and other animals in the wild.\nWEEKNIGHTS AT THE WAGNER\nGrowing Old in the Jungle: The Challenges of Aging for Wild Chimpanzees\nwith Dr. Ben Finkel \nIt was once thought that wild animals rarely lived long enough to experience age-related declines. However\, substantial evidence has since emerged that senescence does occur in natural populations\, and these deteriorations in vitality are nearly universal across the animal kingdom—shaping survival and reproduction in many species. During this talk\, Dr. Finkel will use chimpanzees as a window into aging in the wild. \nLike humans\, our closest living relatives are exceptionally long-lived and\, at first glance\, appear to age gracefully: maintaining body condition and social integration well into old age. Drawing on data from wild male chimpanzees at Ngogo in Kibale National Park\, Uganda\, Dr. Finkel explores growing old in the wild\, challenges of foraging\, travel\, and mating\, and whether chimpanzee’s seemingly graceful aging reflects the adoption of new strategies to compensate for these age-related changes. \nBy identifying the mechanisms that link senescence to behavior in a long-lived wild species\, this research offers a lens into how aging has evolved in natural environments and offers a comparative perspective on the evolutionary foundations of longevity\, including in humans. \nAn evening lecture series\, Weeknights at the Wagner\, invites experts into our Victorian lecture hall to speak on a range of science and history of science related subjects. Each talk includes a Q&A with the speaker. \nAbout the Speaker\nBen Finkel is a biological anthropologist and primatologist whose research focuses on the evolution of senescence and life-history theory. He is currently a Lecturer at Dartmouth College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2024\, where his dissertation examined the functional challenges of aging in wild chimpanzees at Ngogo\, Uganda. Ben’s broader research interests include foraging behavior\, dental wear\, fecal particle size\, the social function of testosterone\, and conservation psychology\, with particular attention to the media portrayal of primates.
