SUMMARY:Free Art Show- Rebecca Schultz- Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:For the month of September on view are works by Rebecca Schultz. Her showcase\, Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond explores in colorful depth the compositions under our feet and looming alongside us\, the local rock formations we overlook. There she finds poetry and history in recesses and outreaches. A beautiful statement is found through the fluidity of paint to represent the rigid structure of geology. In taking such a close examination of the quite strength we take for granted yet depend so much on\, Schultz asks us to appreciate the subtleties and learn more about ourselves. \nStop in the gallery 4 days a week to view and add to your collection. All works are also available for sale online through our site www.blackmothgallery.com. You will not want to miss out on experiencing these one of a kind works in person. \n10% of all proceeds will go to Friends of the Earth

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Magic Gardens presents ‘Lost Landscapes: The ‘Skin of the Bride’ mural by Isaiah Zagar’
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens unveils Lost Landscapes: The ‘Skin of the Bride’ mural by Isaiah Zagar\, a new exhibition that serves as both a tribute to Isaiah Zagar’s “Skin of the Bride” mural and an archive of the community’s attempt to protect his remarkable contribution to public art. It offers a poignant look at the process of trying to save a significant cultural artifact while looking back in time at Zagar’s creation of the lost masterpiece.\nArtist Isaiah Zagar’s mural “The Skin of the Bride” adorned the walls of the former Painted Bride Art Center and is a testament to his intricate and imaginative artistic vision. Completed in the 1990s\, the 7\,000-square-foot mosaic reflects Zagar’s signature style with its vibrant and eclectic use of materials. When the Painted Bride Art Center placed the building up for sale in 2017\, the Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens team fought tirelessly for five years in attempts to protect the mural but were ultimately unsuccessful. When the mural faced demolition in 2023\, the PMG preservation team worked diligently to salvage the unique tiles and components that made up the artwork featured in ‘Lost Landscapes.’

SUMMARY:Carrying On: Black Panther Party Artists Continue the Legacy
DESCRIPTION:GLASSBORO\, NJ—Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is excited to announce Carrying On: Black Panther Party Artists Continue the Legacy\, a new exhibition celebrating the works of former Black Panther Party artists: Gayle Asali Dickson\, Emory Douglas\, Malik Edwards\, and Akinsanya Kambon. Curated by Colette Gaiter\, Carrying On… showcases the legacy and current work of these cultural pioneers together for the first time to honor their lifelong commitments to people\, justice\, liberation\, and the freedom to express their creative visions. This exhibition will be on view from January 27 to March 15\, 2025. In celebration of Black History Month\, a panel discussion with the artists and curator will take place on Saturday\, February 8 from 3-4 pm\, followed by an opening reception from 4-6 pm. \nThese four artists were teenagers and young adults when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended legal segregation and discrimination in the United States. They grew up in the Jim Crow era\, restricted by laws and practices that affected every aspect of their lives and severely limited opportunities to pursue their dreams. Through talent\, perseverance\, and serendipity\, they became and remain artists. \nThe Black Panther Party and The Black Panther newspaper are the common denominators unifying their early artistic careers. As Curator Colette Gaiter explains\, “Carrying On… brings together four artists who participated in a radical justice experiment that resonates today over half a century later. Emory Douglas joined the Black Panther Party (BPP) in 1967 and practiced the Party’s mantra\, “Each one teach one.” He later worked with Gayle Asali Dickson\, Malik Edwards\, and Akinsanya Kambon at various times on The Black Panther newspaper in the early 1970s. Edwards and Kambon joined the BPP after serving in Vietnam. Like Dickson and Douglas\, they saw a way to work for liberation. The artists’ early work (made during the late 1960s- early 1970s global social movements and uprisings against oppression of all kinds) alongside their later and current work reveals personal and artistic evolutions. Dickson and Edwards use spiritual elements in their art just as they did in their lives to transcend oppression and bring others along with them. Douglas and Kambon connect with ancestors for the same purpose. Various media and work styles represent the artists’ need to increase their expressive range and expand their thinking. From the beginning\, each artist used their talents and insights to visualize a radical future and motivate others to imagine beyond their current conditions. Their work helped make lasting changes in the world. Carrying on the BPP’s teachings\, all four artists still work with communities\, telling visual stories that sustain a steady movement toward liberation for everyone.” \nIn the decades following their work at The Black Panther newspaper\, each artist has expanded their ways of using figures to represent realities and communicate aspirational ideas. Carrying On… will feature drawings\, paintings\, clay sculptures\, graphic design\, digital prints\, and images generated from Artificial Intelligence (AI) prompts. The juxtaposition of viewing the artists’ early work next to their later and current work will also offer insight into the artists’ perspectives on social progress and change\, while celebrating their dedication to the belief that art motivates and inspires people to work for their own liberation.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: An Introduction to Irish
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “An Introduction to Irish\,” on a resurgent language and the basics of using it\, with Mike Malloy\, Irish Language instructor at Villanova University. \nGear up for Saint Patrick’s Day by taking a whirlwind tour of the Irish language and how to use it with Mike Malloy\, an instructor for Irish at Villanova University and a regular teacher for the Irish language organization Daltaí na Gaeilge. \nHe’ll talk about where the Irish language comes from\, whether it is properly called “Gaelic\,” and how to pronounce Irish words and names. You’ll learn some basic Irish words and phrases and how to read Irish road signs. \nYou’ll also gain a knowledge of the language’s place in Ireland’s history and society. You’ll learn how it has been revived and has changed in the process\, and how it compares to other languages\, including Latin and Yiddish\, once thought to be “dead” or in decline. \nIn the 1840s\, on the eve of the Great Famine\, there were between three and four million speakers of the Irish language in Ireland. Today\, that number is closer to 70\,000\, but Irish has gone from being a language with few books\, low literacy\, and low social status to becoming a recognized and supported language in Ireland\, the United Kingdom\, and the European Union. It has its own television channels\, radio stations\, and newspapers\, as well as a vast literature of original works and translations\, and schools that use the Irish language to teach students are experiencing meteoric growth. \nWe’ll examine what makes Irish unusual among western European languages\, and you might end up unusual among other celebrants of Saint Patrick’s Day in terms of how easily choice Irish words roll off your tongue. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A road sign in Ireland. SUMMARY:Shayne Terry Presents Leave: A Postpartum Account\, with Jiordan Castle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Philadelphia launch of Shayne Terry’s Leave: A Postpartum Account\, out now from Autofocus Books. Shayne will be in conversation with Jiordan Castle\, author of Disappearing Act. The two will discuss their books\, the craft of writing about real people\, and resisting the conventions of traditional memoir. Literary friendship will be abundant and refreshments will be served. \nAbout the book: Shayne Terry’s fourth trimester is not going as planned. Instead of bonding with her new baby\, she’s stuck on the couch with a third-degree tear\, barely able to walk. When the women in her family show up to help\, they come bearing family secrets and old wounds that also need repair. Begun as notes on Terry’s phone documenting a parental leave gone awry\, Leave examines a healing process complicated by capitalism\, intergenerational trauma\, and a healthcare system with a long history of devaluing women. This powerful postpartum account treats birth as a portal\, one that can connect us to a lineage of pain\, joy\, death\, and life. And at a time when our bodily autonomy is being stripped away\, Leave is an urgent exploration of one woman’s experience recovering from birth in America. \nA Chicago Review of Books Most Anticipated Book of 2025 \n“I want to give this to every woman I know.” — Lindsay Hunter\, author of \nShayne Terry’s work has appeared in Catapult\, Chicago Review of Books\, CRAFT\, Electric Literature\, TriQuarterly\, Vol. 1 Brooklyn\, and elsewhere. She has been selected for workshops and residencies at Bread Loaf\, CRIT\, Tin House\, and the Vermont Studio Center\, and her story The Rock Is Not a Rock was included as a distinguished story of 2024 in Best American Short Stories. She lives in Brooklyn. \nJiordan Castle is the author of Disappearing Act\, a memoir in verse. Her poetry and prose appear in The New Yorker\, The Millions\, HuffPost\, The Rumpus\, and elsewhere\, including the anthologies Best New Poets and What My Father and I Don’t Talk About. Originally from New York\, she has a BA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and an MFA in Poetry from Hunter College. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and their dog.
