SUMMARY:Pumpkin "Cabbage Patch Kids"
DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, Hillary Bor and Chef Ian Moroney opened Pumpkin BYOB on a sleepy stretch of South Street with a fresh vision for cooking simply and seasonally. Now\, twenty years later\, the neighborhood is thriving\, as are farm-to-table restaurants around the city. \nTo celebrate their 20th anniversary\, Pumpkin will devote the second half of 2024 to one of Ian’s favorite ingredients: No\, not pumpkin. Cabbage! \nThey have invited over a dozen chefs from the Philadelphia area to create a dish using cabbage that reflects the style of their cooking\, heritage\, and restaurant. They’re calling them the Cabbage Patch Kids. Each dish will run for three nights only (Tuesday-Thursday) on the normal three course prix fixe menu at Pumpkin\, either as one of the appetizers or one of the entree choices. Each month will feature at least two Cabbage Patch Kid recipes\, beginning in May until the end of the year. There will be a punch card\, where diners can earn a free dinner at Pumpkin by trying eight of the cabbage dishes. \nThe first Cabbage Patch Kid was Chef Alex Yoon from Little Fish. Little Fish is the first restaurant Ian worked at when he moved from Syracuse to Philadelphia\, about 25 years ago\, back when his father owned it. Now Alex is the chef and owner and while a lot has changed\, there is definitely a throughline. Alex’s dish was a charred cabbage and pork dumpling. \nChef Alex will be joined in May by Chef Ange Branca of the newly opened Kampar. Their two cabbage dishes will celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. \nJune will see two new Cabbage Patch Kids\, celebrating Pride Month: Joncarl Lachman of Winkel and Diana Widjojo of Rice and Sambal. \nHere’s the current list of Cabbage Patch Kids: \nAlex Yoon\, Little Fish\nAlexandra Holt\, Roxanne\nAndrew Wood\, Le Virtu\nAnge Branca\, Kampar\nCarlos Aparicio\, El Chingon\nCasey Webb\, Man v Food\nChance Anies\, Tabachoy\nDiana Widjojo\, Rice & Sambal\nEli Collins\, A.Kitchen\nJoncarl Lachman\, Winkel\nKiki Aranita\, Poi Dog\nLiz Grothe\, Scampi\nLor Kats\, Saami Somi\nMelissa McGrath\, Sweet Amalia\nOmar and Cybille Tate\, Honeysuckle Prov\nPat Alfiero\, Heavy Metal\nRebecca Foxman\, Fox & Sons \nBe sure to follow Pumpkin to see the chef line up each month\, the dishes they are creating\, and an adorable cabbage patch style illustration (they may need to make some swag using these images\, they are just that cute).

SUMMARY:Free Art Show- Rebecca Schultz- Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:For the month of September on view are works by Rebecca Schultz. Her showcase\, Formations: Wissahickon and Beyond explores in colorful depth the compositions under our feet and looming alongside us\, the local rock formations we overlook. There she finds poetry and history in recesses and outreaches. A beautiful statement is found through the fluidity of paint to represent the rigid structure of geology. In taking such a close examination of the quite strength we take for granted yet depend so much on\, Schultz asks us to appreciate the subtleties and learn more about ourselves. \nStop in the gallery 4 days a week to view and add to your collection. All works are also available for sale online through our site www.blackmothgallery.com. You will not want to miss out on experiencing these one of a kind works in person. \n10% of all proceeds will go to Friends of the Earth

SUMMARY:Prima Materia
DESCRIPTION:Opens November 7\, 2024 through January 4\, 2025 with a reception and gallery talk\, November 14 5:00-7:00 PM (talk begins at 5:30)\, 301 High St W\, Glassboro\, NJ 08028. \nAll three artists are experienced makers actively creating provocative artworks that relate to materials and techniques associated with crafts such as embroidery\, beadwork\, decorative paper folding and cutting\, and elements from the scenic arts. Their efforts consistently yield marvelous results\, including novel sculptural objects\, sumptuously detailed and evocative two-dimensional works\, and challenging mixed-media installations that appeal to the senses through their impressive individual and collective visuality. Whether anchored on the wall or displayed in the round\, the works selected for Prima Materia generate visual and spatial synergies imbued with a powerful combination of subtle yet vibrant energies and symbolic archetypes. Not unlike living entities\, these works exert their agency upon us\, in a sense “arresting” our sensorial attention through their ability to convey something tangible and concrete about the ephemeral and transcendental nature of the creative impulse. \nEngaging with the alchemy of creativity through expertly crafted artworks\, Prima Materia is essentially visionary in scope. Subsumed within the effervescent flow of macro and micro historical trends that have shifted the definition and reproduction of fine art worlds into supporting the creation and display of art that can be technically described as “craft-oriented” and vice versa\, Prima Materia contributes to ongoing discourses around creative interdisciplinarity to push and expand the collective vision of contemporary art in 2024. Each of the three artists has striven to diversify what art is and what it can be made of\, into unique forms bounded by expressive materiality.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: A Nation That Almost Wasn't
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “A Nation That Almost Wasn’t\,” on how colonialists’ formation of the United States was anything but a foregone conclusion but happened anyway\, with Jessica Choppin Roney\, associate professor of history at Temple University\, director of the Program in Early American Economy and Society at the Library Company of Philadelphia\, and author of Governed by a Spirit of Opposition: The Origins of American Political Practice in Colonial Philadelphia. \nAt a time of deep political polarization and disagreement over the fundamental nature and direction of our nation\, it’s worthwhile to revisit the early history of the United States to see how it resolved the big questions faced in the course of its formation. \nWe forget now—but Americans back then then were fully aware—that the shape and composition of the still lower-case “united states” was once very much unresolved. The American Revolution played out as both a crisis of empire and a crisis of democracy\, and once the thirteen colonies declared independence from Britain it was not at all clear whether the English-speaking people in North America were now one nation\, thirteen\, or many more. \nIn essence\, early Americans grappled with a question that we ourselves still struggle to answer: What makes us “one people\,” as the Declaration of Independence asserted we are? \nAs settlers moved farther west\, it was unclear what was to keep them from breaking away entirely and forming their own states that they could control. Was Vermont going to be a state? Kentucky? Ohio? Who got to decide? \nMany of the people in those places declared themselves to be outside the control of eastern state capitals and able to use the same principle of self-determination in the Declaration to say\, “We\, too\, can declare our independence.” Whether that was true\, why or why not\, and what either conclusion meant for the future of a democratic republic was at the heart of the constitutional crisis of the 1780s. \nThis talk frames the origins of the US Constitution as a response to the revolution “out of bounds.” Professor Roney will discuss how the founding generation resolved the tension between the right to self-determination and the desire to create one\, large\, unified nation. She’ll look at work that the Constitution did to meet this end and how did it fell short. And she’ll talk about what the choices made by the founders then mean for us now. \nThe mechanisms the founders used to foster unity across time and space matter as we think about bridging divisions today. This talk will leave you thinking at a more profound level about what it means to be a citizen of the United States. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A map of the Thirteen Colonies and nearby colonial areas just before the Revolutionary War. From the 1923 book Historical Atlas\, by William R. Shepherd.

By the end\, you’ll be sketching figures that look like people. \nSessions 2 – 4 will combine learning techniques\, such as movement\, gesture\, shading\, and texture\, with a figure model. So grab your sketchbook and let’s get drawing—because every masterpiece starts with a single line! \n*Students must bring a Newsprint sketchbook (11×14). All other supplies will be provided

SUMMARY:[untitled] film series: Persona with Tshay
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, November 20th at 6 PM for a screening of Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 film\, Persona\, followed by a discussion with Tshay. An enigmatic and frequently studied film\, Persona presents questions of domestic relations\, psychology\, and the uncanny\, similarly explored in the exhibition Joanna Piotrowksa: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies. This is the third and final of three parts in the [untitled] film series\, which aims to deepen our understanding of Piotrowska’s work. \nCaptioning will be available for this program. \nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \nSelected Film\nPersona\, dir. Ingmar Bergman\, 93 minutes\nBy the midsixties\, Ingmar Bergman had already conjured many of the cinema’s most unforgettable images. But with the radical Persona\, this supreme artist attained new levels of visual poetry. In the first of a series of legendary performances for Bergman\, Liv Ullmann plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute; an equally mesmerizing Bibi Andersson is the garrulous young nurse caring for her in a remote island cottage. While isolated together there\, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference that would prove to be one of cinema’s most influential creations. Acted with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by the great Sven Nykvist\, Persona is a penetrating\, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth. \nAbout the series\n[untitled] is a three-part film series inspired by ICA’s current exhibition\, Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies\, that highlights the various technical or thematic devices Piotrowska employs in cultivating her highly enigmatic and cinematic aesthetic. Each screening will begin with an offering that inspires close looking and ends with a group discussion moderated by a selected guest speaker. We invite participants to view the films together\, exchange their perspectives\, and engage in mutual learning. Film screenings will take place on September 18th\, October 23rd\, and November 20th. \nAbout the guest speaker\nTshay is a Jamaican-American filmmaker and artist from Amityville\, NY. She is a writer\, director\, producer\, shooter\, and editor who uses filmmaking to imagine a world where Black people have full creative agency over their lives. Working in close collaboration with loved ones\, Tshay creates films across documentary\, fiction and hybrid forms\, namely her debut narrative short film\, gales.\, which screened at BlackStar Film Festival\, American Black Film Festival\, Pan African Film Festival\, and a number of universities and organizations worldwide. She is the recipient of awards from Art Works\, Sachs Arts\, and Independence Public Media Foundation\, and holds degrees from both University of Pennsylvania and University College London. She is currently developing her debut animated film\, TELL ME WHEN YOU GET HOME.\, through her production company Studio Tshay. \nSupport\nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong. \nSupport for Joanna Piotrowska: unseeing eyes\, restless bodies has been provided by The Inchworm Fund. Additional support has been provided by Danielle Anderman\, Cecile & Chris D’Amelio\, Stacey Burke Frost & Benjamin Marc Frost\, Christina Weiss Lurie\, Norma & Lawrence Reichlin\, and Stephanie & David Simon.

SUMMARY:Great Wine Made Simple: The Wine Tasting Class
DESCRIPTION:This session is devoted to the great grape varieties that make wine a joy to drink and understand. We’ll explore the rich tapestry of flavors they offer and unravel the mysteries of wine labels\, all while savoring some truly delightful wines. By the end of our time together\, you’ll have the confidence to choose and order wine with ease\, ensuring you always get the bottle you desire\, no matter the price. \nThis class pays homage to Andrea Immer Robinson\, a Master Sommelier and bestselling author. Her book\, *Great Wine Made Simple* (Clarkson Potter)\, was published in 2000\, just months before our own Wine School of Philadelphia came into being. It quickly became required reading for our students\, and we still regard it as one of the finest introductions to wine for newcomers. \nAndrea has been a steadfast friend to our school. In 2004\, she honored us by serving as the keynote speaker at a lecture series hosted by the Wine School. The event took place at the Food Network’s Great Big Food Show in Philadelphia\, where she began her talk to a packed audience by declaring\, “You are lucky to have the Wine School of Philadelphia\,” and shared some generous words about our director\, Keith Wallace. \nThis class is a tribute to *Great Wine Made Simple* and our cherished friend\, Andrea. Like her book\, it is designed to give wine students a straightforward approach to decoding the labels of the world’s finest wines. You can expect to journey through the classic wine regions of France\, Italy\, Spain\, and beyond\, gaining insight and appreciation for the wines they produce.

SUMMARY:David Hayes Conducts Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Music Director David Hayes conducts the music of three 20th-century geniuses influenced by New York. Leonard Bernstein began writing a violin concerto for Isaac Stern in 1953 and through the course of ensuing decades\, it remained one of his fondest works. It is performed by violinist Sandy Cameron\, a tour de force in 20th and 21st-century repertoire\, hailed as “brilliant” by The Washington Post. Bartók’s Divertimento\, written weeks before he was forced to leave fascist Europe for the life of an exile in New York City\, is a musical contrast to Kernis’ Musica Celestis\, inspired by the medieval conception of angels singing in heaven. \nDuration: 80 minutes including intermission

SUMMARY:Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Dvořák & Price with Yannick
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a musical odyssey with GRAMMY Award-winning conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Curtis Symphony Orchestra.
