SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more\, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd. \nThis exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2\, 2026 through January 2\, 2027.

SUMMARY:ANANSI THE SPIDER
DESCRIPTION:Family fun for 3 and up! The Origin of Anansi the Spider is inspired by an African fable from the Ashanti people of Ghana. Anansi had a dream to be the lord of all stories\, so he went to the Sky-God Nyame and made his request. Nyame gave him the mission of bringing back a python\, a leopard\, and a swarm of hornets and promised that if Anansi did this\, he would become lord of the stories. Anansi was a great trickster and was able to use his cunning wit to fool the animals into coming back to Nyame with him. Anansi succeeded and was named lord of all stories. This production is another in Curio’s Make/Partake series where children will have hands-on experience in participating in the production by making props\, creating sound effects and even controlling the weather. \nPREVIEW NOVEMBER 6 at 6pm\nRUNS NOVEMBER 7 to 22 at 11am and 1pm

SUMMARY:You'll Be Okay: A Bad Daughter's Guide to Survival
DESCRIPTION:You’ll Be Okay: A Bad Daughter’s Guide to Survival is an exhibition exploring concepts of trauma\, breaking patterns\, and the creation of new narratives through viewer participation. The show is composed entirely of artworks by Veronica Cianfrano from various stages of her artistic career\, curated by Jessica Clark\, a long-time friend and collaborator who has known her through many of those stages. \n  \nThe totality of our experiences makes us who we are; the totality of an artist’s catalog has a similar role. Past and present hang together on these walls\, just as thoughts of the past bubble up into our daily lives. Viewers are invited to actively create their own stories based on the artworks present in the show\, deriving meaning from the imagery\, materials\, and formal choices made by the artist. Gallery attendees are able to move through the show unencumbered\, empowered to inhabit roles of author and creator. The viewer achieves what the artist cannot by viewing the work from a different perspective; they offer up new meanings and steer the direction of future pieces.  \n  \nAbington Art Center  \n515 Meetinghouse Rd\, Jenkintown\, PA \nabingtonartcenter.org  \nOn View: Nov. 6 – Jan. 4                                                    \nOpening Reception: Fri. SUMMARY:Priority Hoarding: A Retrospectacle
DESCRIPTION:“Where our baggage is yours!” \nWelcome to the Bearded Ladies’ Hairport\, an interactive installation & performance series built on 16-years of accumulated baggage from a queer cabaret company devoted to art\, care\, mess\, and community. While you’re waiting for a flight that may never take off\, unpack your baggage and rifle through some of ours. You may recognize something as your own\, or find something you never knew you were carrying. \nMade for anyone who has ever lost a bag\, gotten stuck\, or missed a (metaphoric) flight\, this trans(formational) installation asks: how do you know it’s time to move on when you don’t know where you’re going? \nProduced by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret\nPart of FringeArt’s 2026 Festival & Collective Futures \nInstallation on view September 10-December 20\, 2026\nat The Hairport | 444 N 3rd Street\, Philadelphia PA 19123 \nInstallation hours:\nWednesday\, Thursday & Friday 4-9PM | Last timed entry at 8:15PM\nSaturday & Sunday 11AM-3PM| Last timed entry at 2:15PM \nLive events at The Hairport | Saturdays at 8PM \nThe Hairport is an interactive\, immersive installation filled with costumes\, cardboard props\, and other ephemera from the Bearded Ladies Cabaret’s 16-year performance history. Visitors will make their way through a sprawling multi-room space made to look like a fantastical\, metaphorical “airport”. Visitors will be invited to interact with components of the installation and may encounter docents in guiding roles. The experience will culminate in a “lounge” space full of “Bearded baggage” which will also serve as the performance site for the Now Hoarding: In-Flight Entertainment live event series. \nIt will take visitors approximately 60-75 minutes to view the entirety of the Priority Hoarding installation. Groups of 6 will enter the installation\, at 15-minute timed entry intervals. An opportunity to ride a Surrey bike is offered but not required.

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

SUMMARY:Remembered Objects in Paper Mache (Spring 2)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:\nHave you ever lost something special or maybe something special has lost its use? Your best winter hat? Your favorite VHS tape? We’re going to reference our own mental images of our remembered objects as we recreate them in paper mache. \nThis will be fun and fairly easy for all skill levels\, with a few challenging moments. Ages 5-105 would be able to handle this medium. \nStudents will sculpt a generalized form in 3 dimensions. They will mix color using acrylic paint and use 2-D color\, line and shape to define and characterize the generalized 3-D form. \nStudents will gain a sculpture that stands in for a lost object. \nTeacher Info:\nBorn 1984 in New York\, NY\, Sophie White lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. Since adolescence in a rapidly transforming NYC at the turn of the millennium\, she has made small\, cityscape paintings from observation of familiar places at various stages of becoming unfamiliar. Colorful sculptures and experimental sound and performance work sometimes accompany her paintings\, mimicking the environment in which they were made. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2025 she was the subject of a solo exhibit at the Philadelphia International Airport\, participated in 11 group exhibitions in Philadelphia and New York and was a nominee for the Pew Fellowship. \nInstagram – @sophie6598\nWebsite – SophieCWhite.com

SUMMARY:THIS MUCH I KNOW
DESCRIPTION:Three actors play over a dozen different roles including Stalin’s daughter\, Russian school girls and the son of an American white supremacist. \nA psychology professor’s search for his missing wife launches us on a time-hopping fugue\, weaving together the stories of Stalin’s daughter defecting to America and the son of a white supremacist growing to doubt his beliefs. An explosively theatrical interrogation of how we make decisions\, how we change our minds\, and how much responsibility we bear for the things we do not control.

SUMMARY:Chile: Ancient & Modern Wines at the Philly Wine School
DESCRIPTION:Uncover the Wines That Time Forgot\nThe vines came first. Long before Chile was a republic\, grapes were growing here. Some of those ancient vines still are\, untouched by rootstock or fashion\, hidden in valleys where the 21st century barely leaves a trace. \nThis isn’t the Chile you think you know. Forget the bargain-bin Merlot. This class is a journey into the true heart of Chilean wine\, where volcanic soils\, coastal fogs\, and ancient vines collide. \nWe’ll start with the regal Cabernet Sauvignons of Maipo\, where Bordeaux dreams were replanted and reimagined. Then we head south to the haunting old-vine País of Bio-Bio\, a grape once dismissed\, now revered—the ancestral thread that links the Old World to the New. From the cool-climate elegance of Casablanca Pinot Noir to the rustic soul of Itata’s Carignan and natural wines\, you’ll taste a living archive of Chilean identity. \nThis class is for the curious.
