DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: Offstage Onstage: Everything You Didn’t See The Greeks Do will be presented at Cannonball Festival at Asian Arts Initiative Black Box Theater (1219 Vine St) for five performances only.  \nFor the first time ever at Haverford Middle School\, three students interrogate all of the action that traditionally took place offstage in Ancient Greek tragedy: Oedipus stabbing his eyes out after hearing the truth that he murdered his father and married his mother\, Medea killing her children to get revenge on her husband Jason\, and the women of Thebes tearing Pentheus apart after being driven mad by Dionysus. The young theatre historians hop in and out of the different characters and stories of the Greeks to win the praise of their English teacher–Mr. Moscow. As they delve deeper and deeper into exploring these unthinkable acts\, however\, they confront the challenges of their own lives in and outside of school – fashion malfunctions\, bullying\, and\, at its worst\, the fear of gun violence. True to the little ghost party form\, much of the play is performed on a tiny stage. \nIf Pen15 and The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) had a baby about Greek tragedy.

This intimate physical theatre adaptation of the gothic masterpiece will run September 16-19. \nObsession for the lost LIGEIA spirals into madness in Poe’s haunting tale of unutterable grief and unimaginable terror. As chilling evidence of a supernatural presence mounts\, the audience wonders: are the narrator’s visions caused by opium\, or has his wife’s corpse been possessed? \nRather than dramatizing the events of the plot\, LIGEIA emphasizes the physical action of storytelling itself. Remaining faithful to Poe’s original text\, solo-performer William Trevino weaves poetic language with his decades of martial arts practice to create a visceral atmosphere of suspense. A 6th degree black belt in Soo Bahk Do and a veteran Poe performer\, Trevino transforms martial arts movement to embody the psychological struggles of Poe’s narrator. \n“I think of Poe’s language as a complex musical score\,” says Trevino. “My martial arts choreography doesn’t illustrate the story\, it dances to it.” \nWilliam Trevino’s work devising theatre from martial arts has been presented in NYC (including at Dixon Place and HERE Arts Center) with support from the Jerome Foundation and the Queens Arts Fund. His Poe performances have ranged from presenting The Tell-Tale Heart at the Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum in Baltimore\, to hosting the television series Gothic Tales on Manhattan Neighborhood Network/MNN. \nLIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented on September 16 (9:00 PM)\, 17 (6:00 PM)\, and 19 (3:30 PM) at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19107) as part of Cannonball\, a presenting hub of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Remaining faithful to Poe’s original text\, solo-performer William Trevino weaves poetic language with his decades of martial arts practice to create a visceral atmosphere of suspense. A 6th degree black belt in Soo Bahk Do and a veteran Poe performer\, Trevino transforms martial arts movement to embody the psychological struggles of Poe’s narrator. \n“I think of Poe’s language as a complex musical score\,” says Trevino. “My martial arts choreography doesn’t illustrate the story\, it dances to it.” \nWilliam Trevino’s work devising theatre from martial arts has been presented in NYC (including at Dixon Place and HERE Arts Center) with support from the Jerome Foundation and the Queens Arts Fund. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our FREE Open House to learn more about the Brass & Wind Project\, a program for students grades 3rd-6th who are interested in learning the musical skills essential to playing a band instrument.  \nIn weekly large and small group classes\, fundamental skills will be taught\, allowing the student to thrive in a low-pressure and supportive environment. Skills taught include:  \n\nBody awareness skills: breathing\, blowing\, posture and how to properly hold an instrument. \n\n\nExecutive & technical: embouchure formation\, finger control & dexterity\, and basic tone production. \n\n\nMusicianship skills: singing\, playing\, moving\, improvising\, creating music of all kinds\, and reading music notation alone and with others. \n\nThe skills learned will prepare them for participation in a traditional Band program and allow them to transition to playing a full-sized band instrument with relative ease.  \nNo prior experience with instrumental music is required. Students are taught by a Master Teacher and supported by Temple University undergraduate music education and performance instrumental interns.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our FREE Open House to learn more about the Philadelphia String Project\, a program for students grades 2nd-7th who are interested in learning the musical skills essential to playing a string instrument. \nIn weekly large and small group classes\, fundamental skills will be taught\, allowing the student to thrive in a low-pressure and supportive environment. Students are taught by a Master Teacher and supported by Temple University undergraduate music education and performance string interns. \nNo audition or previous musical experience required. Student must provide their own instrument.

DESCRIPTION:History\, Archaeology\, & Family Fun! \nA local favorite\, the Fall Festival features a wide variety of historic skills and trades demonstrations\, archaeological excavations and activities\, displays from local historical organizations\, hayrides\, and hands-on activities for kids of all ages! In addition there will be vendors of handcrafted goods in the Colonial Market\, locally-made beer and wine at the Tavern\, a Community Corner featuring local businesses and organizations\, and food vendors. \nAdmission to the Fall Festival is free. Parking is $10 per car. \nShuttle buses between the parking area and the festival site will run every 15 minutes throughout the event. Additional costs may apply for certain activities.
