SUMMARY:Philadelphia: For the People Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence affirmed that a government exists to serve the people. Although that affirmation has not been enforced with equal measure\, Philadelphians have fought to create a City of Brotherly Love. The city’s collective beauty is apparent in its parks and public art\, while infrastructure such as telephone lines and public transit are reminders of how Philadelphia has evolved to serve its people. As we reflect upon the city’s development\, its strengths and its shortcomings\, how can we best shape a future for Philadelphia’s people? \nObjects on display are from the Children’s Literature Research Collection\, Government Publications\, the Map Collection\, and the Print and Picture Collection. To learn more\, visit freelibrary.org/specialcollections and freelibrary.org/gpd. \nThis exhibition can be viewed in the Second Floor West Gallery of Parkway Central Library from May 2\, 2026 through January 2\, 2027.

SUMMARY:Paths to Independence: 1765-1787
DESCRIPTION:In 1763\, following the French and Indian War\, most American colonists cherished their place in the British Empire and expressed loyalty to King George III. Yet by 1776\, many of those same colonists were ready to declare independence\, denouncing the king as a “Royal Brute.” Paths to Independence explores how such a dramatic transformation in political allegiance and public sentiment occurred in just over a decade. \n \nFeaturing rare original documents from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s collections\, including letters\, pamphlets\, broadsides\, and drafts of the Articles of Confederation\, which was the first constitution of the United States\, the display traces the complex path to American independence. It highlights not only the perspectives of well-known figures such as Benjamin Franklin\, John Dickinson\, Thomas Jefferson\, John Adams\, and James Wilson\, but also the experiences and evolving views of ordinary Philadelphians.

SUMMARY:Human / Nature
DESCRIPTION:Gravers Lane Gallery \n8405 Germantown Avenue \nPhiladelphia | PA 19118 \n215-247-1603 \nOpening reception: June 5 | 5 – 8 pm\nArtist Talks: June 5 | 6:30 pm\nClosing reception: July 3 | 5 – 8 pm\nArtist Talks: July 3 | 6:30 pm \nGravers Lane Gallery welcomes the remarkable work of Painter / Sculptor Ron Isaacs. Renowned Kentucky-based artist and teacher with a career spanning over 50 years\, Isaacs’s work has been exhibited in major galleries in Chicago\, Philadelphia\, and New York\, with work residing in multiple private and corporate collections. Currently\, the largest public collection is housed in the Racine Museum of Art in Wisconsin. \nBy using objects such as garments\, tools\, and organic materials\, Isaacs explores the narrative of objects and their relation to mortality\, memory\, and the passage of time. Through the process of creating an installation with objects in a still-life setting\, Isaacs experiments with birch\, plywood\, and acrylic paint to construct his work. \nAs a trained painter\, Isaacs employs techniques similar to those of the old masters to create a composition reminiscent of traditional two-dimensional work. By balancing form\, texture\, and light\, Isaacs’ work explores the elements of memory\, the passage of time\, and how objects can evoke memory.

Our society leaves little physical or existential room for us to experience let alone process loss. This project points directly at this omission by making literal Room For Grief – dedicated\, intentional space where these themes are expressed\, witnessed and held in community. \nGuests are invited to walk through the rooms of a house built by grief\, woven together with the art that has helped us survive. Let our robust and diverse group of contributors show you what it is like to live\, heal\, struggle\, cope and offer sanctuary for mourning at a time where the burden of grief in daily life is overwhelming. Join us as we grieve death\, identity\, health\, security\, safety\, freedom\, democracy\, the fulfillment of promises that were made to us generationally. Together we hold up the walls to create Room For Grief.  \n\nRoom for Grief comes alive with an opening reception on June 4th and is laid to rest at the closing reception on June 28th\nThe exhibition will be hosted at the historic Cherry Street Pier along the Delaware River – a beautiful and peaceful place to explore grief and be in community with other grievers\, also mere blocks from Old City and the heart of the semisesquicentennial.\nOur lovingly curated events lineup includes a Death Cafe\, Beyond Loss Film Series\, a performance in The Garden\, spoken word and song performances\, Grief Survival support\, and more!\n\nCall to Action: Join us in the Room for Grief this June. Visit the immersive installation\, meet the artists\, attend a robust lineup of events curated to support\, uplift\, and inspire grievers of all types and from all walks of life. SUMMARY:Pride AF - Philly Pride Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Philly Pride Arts Festival (Pride AF) was created by a coalition of five Philadelphia-based arts organizations: Cross Keys Theatre Collective\, East Passyunk Opera Project\, Liberty City Arts\, Prismatic Arts Ensemble\, and Wear Yellow Proudly. Together\, we are presenting a month-long\, citywide celebration of LGBTQIA+ artists\, stories\, and community. \nRunning throughout Pride Month at various locations across Philadelphia\, the festival will feature performances\, concerts\, cabaret\, outdoor events\, and community engagement activities\, highlighting the depth and diversity of the city’s queer artistic landscape. \nAffectionately branded Philly PrideAF\, the festival is co-produced to pool resources\, audiences\, and creative vision. This model allows the festival to be rooted in artistic excellence\, access\, and collective care. \nIn addition to its five producers\, the festival is partnering with LGBTQIA+-affirming artists and allies\, local businesses\, and community organizations throughout the month\, including boom-bap jazz band Mobbluz\, Altissimo Arts\, and independent bookstores. The festival will also collaborate with mutual aid organizations doing critical work for LGBTQIA+ communities in Philadelphia\, with a different organization highlighted at each event and opportunities for audiences to learn more and contribute directly through material and monetary donations.

SUMMARY:Free art show- A Likeness Now Seen
DESCRIPTION:May 1st – June 30th \nArtist reception- May 22nd 6-9pm \nBlack Moth Gallery presents a group exhibition exploring form as subject by contemporary artists. The collection of artworks addresses issues of self-identity\, body type acceptance\, intimacy and aging. Working in various mediums from timeless practices to exploring new materials and techniques\, artists demonstrate their appreciation of the human figure. Some exercise mastery of classic renderings of the subject while others seek expressive interpretations and inspirations of the all so familiar forms\, albeit infinitely unique. \n  \nThese modern examples of a classic motif naturally register with us because what we recognize is most familiar\, a variation of the material self. These are moments in the finite life of another being\, stilled and eternalized\, sometimes venerated. A story is told\, energy is felt\, and technical skills are admired. The intimacy of engaging a portrait or figure painting will always be reflective\, enticing\, and esteemed\, from the experience the of artist to that of the viewer. \n  \nA portion of the proceeds from this show will support Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. \n  \nInvited artists: \n\nJessica Bednarcik\nMashiul Chowdhury\nKatherine Fraser\nThomas Tustin\nTony Ward\nBarbara Zanelli

SUMMARY:America 250 Bus Tour: Revolution & Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore was a key city in the fight for Independence. Did you know Edgar Allan Poe’s grandparents were famous Revolutionary War patriots in Baltimore? \nJoin us for an America 250 bus tour through Baltimore’s Revolutionary past\, where the fight for independence lives on in headstone\, story\, and street. Along the way\, discover the Edgar Allan Poe family’s Revolutionary roots and the lives of Baltimore’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. Tours meet inside the Baltimore Visitor Center at the Inner Harbor. \nThe first stop on this special commemorative tour is Westminster Hall & Burying Ground. World-famous as the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe\, this hallowed ground is also home to over 300 patriots of the American Revolution and War of 1812—including Poe’s own family. Immigrants\, women\, and working-class heroes like David and Elizabeth Poe\, who aided The Marquis de Lafayette’s troops\, are buried alongside towering figures like General Samuel Smith\, James McHenry\, and Rev. Patrick Allison\, chaplain to the first Continental Congress and an early voice for the separation of church and state. \nThe tour continues with history of two Baltimore signers of the Declaration of Independence: a visit to Old St. Paul’s Cemetery\, where Samuel Chase\, the United States’ first impeached Supreme Court Justice\, is laid to rest\, and then the historic Carroll Mansion where Charles Carroll of Carrollton (the only Catholic signer) spent his final days and where the very bed in which he died remains on display. \nWhether you’re a lifelong Marylander or a first-time visitor\, “Revolution & Remembrance” invites you to see Baltimore’s Revolutionary roots through fresh eyes\, and to reflect on the diverse people who helped shape a nation.
