SUMMARY:Cadence in the Clouds
DESCRIPTION:Cadence in the Clouds is an industry night that celebrates the dreamers in Philadelphia; the artists\, the creatives\, the entrepreneurs\, and the supporters of the arts. It is meant to show Philly artists that they don’t need to move out of the city to have a thriving career. Philly is a city rich in history\, and they should be a part of it given the necessary resources and connections. We aim to create the industry night that puts all of those people in one room\, while using all local Philadelphia businesses and artists\, to make a night where people connect and collaborate through the language of music. While patrons get to enjoy a live concert featuring music from DJ Bear One\, A.Rob\, and Sahlii\, their ticket also comes with artist bios\, raffles for a studio session and a photography/music video shoot\, live art\, complimentary snacks and sweets\, and so much more. \nThis particular concert is all about celebrating artists who are courageous enough to use their music and their art to make a change and stand up to what is going on in the world. It’s meant to show that while some pay punish you for speaking up\, we will highlight you\, putting you on our stage to amplify your voice. Every artist and business who is taking part has used their platform as a release\, and as a means to protest everything happening in the world. By purchasing tickets or any of the art that will be at the event\, you are directly putting money into the pockets of Black and Brown artists.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Sex with Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Sex with Shakespeare\,” a surprising look at how the Bard thought about gender and sexuality and how it influenced his works\, with Abdulhamit Arvas\, scholar and historian of sexuality and assistant professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. \nBefore “gender” became a culture-war keyword\, London audiences watched William Shakespeare’s plays with an open secret: Because women were barred from the public stage\, every Juliet\, Desdemona\, and Rosalind was played by a boy actor. \nWhat did that theatrical reality do to ideas of masculinity\, femininity\, desire—and to the plays themselves? \nHear such questions tackled in a talk that will use Shakespeare’s work as a vivid guide to a world whose assumptions about bodies\, desire\, and intimacy will seem both recognizable and surprisingly alien. \nWith sharp\, accessible examples from Shakespeare’s plays and the histories around them\, Dr. Arvas will trace how modern assumptions about gender and sexuality\, as well as love\, emerged over time. He’ll invite us to read Shakespeare not as a mirror of the present\, but as a window to see how our thoughts about the body—and the meanings we attach to our body and its intimacies—all have a history. \nInstead of treating Shakespeare as timeless\, this talk will ask what his plays reveal about the historical ideas that once organized everyday life. It will discuss how bodies were classified\, how difference was explained\, what counted as normal\, sinful\, healthy\, or “natural\,” and why categories we take for granted today did not always exist in the same form. \nWe’ll look at whether Shakespeare’s world recognized anything like “sexual orientation” and whether the gender binary was as stable—or as important—then as it seems now. We’ll explore how religion\, medicine\, and law shape what people believed about sex and desire. \nYou’ll be invited to consider: What changed between then and now and why do those changes matter for how we read Shakespeare today? What was love back then? What is it today? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage by Canva

SUMMARY:Riverbend (1989) – 6K Restoration Philadelphia Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Reelblack presents the Philadelphia premiere of the brand-new 6K restoration of Riverbend (1989) on Thursday\, February 26\, 2026 at 7:00 PM at PFS East. \nDirected by Sam Firstenberg (American Ninja 1 & 2) and starring Steve James (I’m Gonna Git You Sucka) and Margaret Avery (The Color Purple)\, Riverbend is a long-lost independent Black action film centered on three Black Vietnam soldiers who arrive in a small Southern town and organize the local community to confront systemic injustice. The restoration was created from a 6K scan of the original 35mm elements and marks the first time the film has been available in any format in over three decades. \nDirector Sam Firstenberg\, along with cast members Julius Tennon\, Alex Morris\, and Vanessa Tate\, will appear for a post-film Q&A moderated by The Micheaux Mission. \n🎟️ Tickets: https://filmadelphia.org/movies/riverbend

SUMMARY:Book signing with Ben Passmore
DESCRIPTION:Ben Passmore is the author of the ongoing comic book series Daygloayhole\, as well as the Eisner Award-nominated and Ignatz Award-winning comic collection Your Black Friend. His newest book\, Black Arms To Hold You Up: A History of Black Resistance was a New York Times Best Graphic Novel of the year. Join us to meet Ben Passmore and get a copy of once of his books signed on Saturday February 28th from 1-3pm. \nAbout the book \nIt’s the summer of 2020\, and downtown Philly is up in flames. “You’re not out in the streets with everyone else?” Ronnie asks his ambivalent son\, Ben\, shambling in with arms full of used books: the works of Malcom X\, Robert F. Williams\, Assata and Sanyika Shakur\, among others. “Black liberation is your fight\, too.” \nSo begins Black Arms to Hold You Up\, a boisterous\, darkly funny\, and sobering march through Black militant history by political cartoonist Ben Passmore. From Robert Charles’s shootout with the police in 1900\, to the Black Power movement in the 1960s\, to the Los Angeles and George Floyd uprisings of the 1990s and 2020\, readers will tumble through more than a century of armed resistance against the racist state alongside Ben—and meet firsthand the mothers and fathers of the movement\, whose stories were as tragic as they were heroic. \nWhat\, after so many decades lost to state violence\, is there left to fight for? Deeply researched\, vibrantly drawn\, and bracingly introspective\, Black Arms to Hold You Up dares to find the answer.

SUMMARY:Turning the Power: Indian Boarding Schools\, Native American Anthropologists\, and the Race to Preserve Indigenous Cultures
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Lunch at the Library presentation from Nathan Sowry who will be discussing his new book: Turning the Power: Indian Boarding Schools\, Native American Anthropologists\, and the Race to Preserve Indigenous Cultures.  \nIn Turning the Power Nathan Sowry examines how some Native American students from the boarding school system\, with its forced assimilationist education\, became key cultural informants for anthropologists conducting fieldwork during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Salvage anthropologists of this era relied on Native informants to accomplish their mission of “saving” Native American cultures and ultimately turned many informants into anthropologists after years of fieldwork experience. \nSowry investigates ten relatively unknown Native American anthropologists and collaborators who\, from 1878 to 1930\, attended a religiously affiliated mission school\, a federal Indian boarding school\, or both. He tells the stories of Native anthropologists Tichkematse\, William Jones\, and James R. Murie\, who were alumni of the Hampton Institute in Virginia. Richard Davis and Cleaver Warden were among the first and second classes to attend the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. Amos Oneroad graduated from the Haskell Indian Industrial Training School in Lawrence\, Kansas\, after attending mission and boarding schools in South Dakota. D. C. Duvall\, John V. Satterlee\, and Florence and Louis Shotridge attended smaller boarding and mission schools in Montana\, Wisconsin\, and Alaska Territory\, respectively. \nTurning the Power follows the forced indoctrination of Native American students and then details how each of them “turned the power\,” using their English knowledge and work experience in the anthropological field to embrace\, document\, and preserve their Native cultures rather than abandoning their heritage.

SUMMARY:Clay & Conversations with Lauren Sandler
DESCRIPTION:The Clay Studio presents Clay & Conversations\, an exciting series of conversations with ceramic artists\, curators\, scholars\, and friends. Join for a talk with Lauren Sandler about her practice and current exhibition\, The Shape We Hold\, an inquiry into the ways that we are shaped and the ways we shape. This event will take place virtually.\nSandler is Professor and Head of Ceramics at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University.\nSandler’s latest exhibition\, The Shape We Hold\, is an inquiry into the ways we are shaped\, and the ways we shape our world. Using regional materials and objects\, including handmade bricks\, sewage pipes\, and plants\, she references historic clay\, textile\, and agricultural industries of the area. Sandler dispels the myth of neutrality\, revealing how systems and structures shape narratives and meaning\, and the role of material culture and industries as apparatus of control. The exhibition is on display in the Jill Bonovitz Gallery through March 29.
