SUMMARY:Edgar Allan Poe's LIGEIA Reimagined through Physical Theatre at Cannonball Festival
DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: LIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented in the Cannonball Festival\, part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival\, at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St). This intimate physical theatre adaptation of the gothic masterpiece will run September 16-19. \nObsession for the lost LIGEIA spirals into madness in Poe’s haunting tale of unutterable grief and unimaginable terror. As chilling evidence of a supernatural presence mounts\, the audience wonders: are the narrator’s visions caused by opium\, or has his wife’s corpse been possessed? \nRather than dramatizing the events of the plot\, LIGEIA emphasizes the physical action of storytelling itself. Remaining faithful to Poe’s original text\, solo-performer William Trevino weaves poetic language with his decades of martial arts practice to create a visceral atmosphere of suspense. A 6th degree black belt in Soo Bahk Do and a veteran Poe performer\, Trevino transforms martial arts movement to embody the psychological struggles of Poe’s narrator. \n“I think of Poe’s language as a complex musical score\,” says Trevino. “My martial arts choreography doesn’t illustrate the story\, it dances to it.” \nWilliam Trevino’s work devising theatre from martial arts has been presented in NYC (including at Dixon Place and HERE Arts Center) with support from the Jerome Foundation and the Queens Arts Fund. His Poe performances have ranged from presenting The Tell-Tale Heart at the Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum in Baltimore\, to hosting the television series Gothic Tales on Manhattan Neighborhood Network/MNN. \nLIGEIA by Edgar Allan Poe will be presented on September 16 (9:00 PM)\, 17 (6:00 PM)\, and 19 (3:30 PM) at Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19107) as part of Cannonball\, a presenting hub of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. General Admission is $25\, with PWYC (pay what you can) tickets available. For tickets & info: https://phillyfringe.org/events/ligeia-by-edgar-allan-poe/ \nIntimate and emotionally intense\, the performance is intended for mature audiences. \n  \nMedia Photo link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1L6vn2oH-xd_1LnZch3v6fMgbopZu1tPU?usp=drive_link

SUMMARY:The Deer Ones
DESCRIPTION:In this semi-autobiographical interactive dramedy\, the audience is invited to participate as the imaginary friends of a young girl playing in the woods. What starts off as “all fun and games” soon escalates into a series of moral dilemmas and life-changing decisions that explore questions like what does it really mean to care for another\, how do we carry (or release) guilt and loss\, and how do the ghosts of the past shape the adults of the future. With highly interactive moments and alternate endings\, every performance changes with the audience. Part of the Cannonball – Philadelphia Fringe Festival

SUMMARY:archy & mehitabel
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating Mel Brooks’ 100th birthday by bringing one of his long overlooked musicals to Philly Fringe! \nIn a deserted office\, a cockroach dives headfirst onto the keys of a typewriter\, pouring out the ruminations of his soul. It’s archy (he’s too small to hold down the shift key)\, poet\, philosopher\, moralist and futile worshipper of mehitabel\, the alley cat. This bare bones\, bizarre\, highly original musical takes us into the streets of the big city as archy tries hopelessly to bring the toujours gai mehitabel off the back fence and into a respectable home as a housecat. \nDon’t miss this one-night only opportunity to discover a rarely performed golden age gem!

SUMMARY:Betsy Ross Groundhog Day
DESCRIPTION:BRGD is a historical fiction dramedy following Betsy Ross stuck in a time loop. SUMMARY:Houndstooth
DESCRIPTION:Vanessa Kamp brings Houndstooth\, a 60-minute interdisciplinary performance\, to this year’s Cannonball festival September 17th\, 20th\, and 26th at Icebox.  \nFamiliar objects are inverted and become the agents of new sonic territories; a wayward speedwalker bares all in a hottt striptease; an aspiring backwoods man’s strutting makes the space feel too small; an enigmatic clubgoer gives a poignant nod to contemporary French cinema; maybe we’re in some guy’s garage where he’s the dj. \nMultiple characters transit and inhabit sensorial spaces and soundscapes where themes of touch are at once literal and expansive\, and act as catalysts to create simple\, lush\, and elegantly surreal passages and scenes. \nUnadorned analog technologies create unexpected and immersive visuals and sound where action unfolds in diverse registers ranging from humor to drag to the surreal. \nTickets are on sale now: https://phillyfringe.org/events/houndstooth/\nGeneral Admission: $25\nPWYC Options\n \nVENUE\nIcebox Project Space\n1400 N American St.

SUMMARY:Days of Awe
DESCRIPTION:A year after her mother’s death\, a poet in recovery moves home to Philadelphia with a suitcase\, a divorce\, and a lifetime of inherited stories. Set during the ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur\, Days of Awe blends poetry\, storytelling\, and chutzpah into a lyrical reckoning with grief\, desire\, and the inheritances we carry. \nFrom sleepless West Philly stoops to the ghost-lit borderlands of the Pale of Settlement\, this solo show traverses geographies and generations\, tracing a lineage of Jewish women through silence\, survival\, and return. \nTold with equal parts reverence and irreverence\, Days of Awe draws on family history and Jewish ritual to ask how we can carry loss while allowing ourselves to fall back in love with the world. \nDays of Awe is presented as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and Cannonball. \nThe show will take place on the third floor of the Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine Street Philadelphia\, PA 19107) \nTickets are available through FringeArts for $25 (pay-what-you-can options avilable): https://phillyfringe.org/events/days-of-awe/
