SUMMARY:What is a “Cult?” Understanding Controversial New Religious Movements
DESCRIPTION:The word “cult” is frequently used in the media as a pejorative term. It refers to a dangerous and often violent fringe religious group that promotes beliefs\, values\, and practices that clash with mainstream culture. This program will outline the emergence of the discourse on “cults” in 20th century America and the role of the media in popularizing this term. We will discuss the divisive psychological theory of brainwashing promoted by anti-cult activists\, the public perception of charismatic “cult leaders” such as Jim Jones and David Koresh\, and the role of the academic study of religion in helping us better understand controversial religious movements. \nOri Tavor is a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Director of the MA Program at the department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations\, the University of Pennsylvania. They will also be accepting reservations for birthday parties and field trips. \n– Hellerick’s Barn Yard Mini Golf – which just opened in 2024 – features eighteen holes adorned with hand-crafted fiberglass farm animals; The first nine holes were designed to meet ADA requirements. Groups of up to five can navigate unique holes such as the log roll\, coin drop or milk can. Kids under 34” inches play free! \n– The Aerial Adventure Park (ropes course) has 9 ziplines\, 21 unique elements and bridges\, plus a 30-foot free-fall. It’s an exhilarating 1.5-hour adventure for kids 7 and older (and adults!). \n– The silo climbing wall stands 35 feet high\, and offers six unique sides with different difficulty levels. For everyone 5-years-old and older\, from beginners to seasoned climbers\, everyone and anyone can find the perfect challenge with three sides for easy climbs\, two that push limits\, and one ultimate challenge for the most experienced climbers. \nHellerick’s offers five different types of birthday parties for different types of kids!
