SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: An Introduction to Irish
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “An Introduction to Irish\,” on a resurgent language and the basics of using it\, with Mike Malloy\, Irish Language instructor at Villanova University. \nGear up for Saint Patrick’s Day by taking a whirlwind tour of the Irish language and how to use it with Mike Malloy\, an instructor for Irish at Villanova University and a regular teacher for the Irish language organization Daltaí na Gaeilge. \nHe’ll talk about where the Irish language comes from\, whether it is properly called “Gaelic\,” and how to pronounce Irish words and names. You’ll learn some basic Irish words and phrases and how to read Irish road signs. \nYou’ll also gain a knowledge of the language’s place in Ireland’s history and society. You’ll learn how it has been revived and has changed in the process\, and how it compares to other languages\, including Latin and Yiddish\, once thought to be “dead” or in decline. \nIn the 1840s\, on the eve of the Great Famine\, there were between three and four million speakers of the Irish language in Ireland. Today\, that number is closer to 70\,000\, but Irish has gone from being a language with few books\, low literacy\, and low social status to becoming a recognized and supported language in Ireland\, the United Kingdom\, and the European Union. It has its own television channels\, radio stations\, and newspapers\, as well as a vast literature of original works and translations\, and schools that use the Irish language to teach students are experiencing meteoric growth. \nWe’ll examine what makes Irish unusual among western European languages\, and you might end up unusual among other celebrants of Saint Patrick’s Day in terms of how easily choice Irish words roll off your tongue. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A road sign in Ireland. SUMMARY:Shayne Terry Presents Leave: A Postpartum Account\, with Jiordan Castle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Philadelphia launch of Shayne Terry’s Leave: A Postpartum Account\, out now from Autofocus Books. Shayne will be in conversation with Jiordan Castle\, author of Disappearing Act. The two will discuss their books\, the craft of writing about real people\, and resisting the conventions of traditional memoir. Literary friendship will be abundant and refreshments will be served. \nAbout the book: Shayne Terry’s fourth trimester is not going as planned. Instead of bonding with her new baby\, she’s stuck on the couch with a third-degree tear\, barely able to walk. When the women in her family show up to help\, they come bearing family secrets and old wounds that also need repair. Begun as notes on Terry’s phone documenting a parental leave gone awry\, Leave examines a healing process complicated by capitalism\, intergenerational trauma\, and a healthcare system with a long history of devaluing women. This powerful postpartum account treats birth as a portal\, one that can connect us to a lineage of pain\, joy\, death\, and life. And at a time when our bodily autonomy is being stripped away\, Leave is an urgent exploration of one woman’s experience recovering from birth in America. \nA Chicago Review of Books Most Anticipated Book of 2025 \n“I want to give this to every woman I know.” — Lindsay Hunter\, author of \nShayne Terry’s work has appeared in Catapult\, Chicago Review of Books\, CRAFT\, Electric Literature\, TriQuarterly\, Vol. 1 Brooklyn\, and elsewhere. She has been selected for workshops and residencies at Bread Loaf\, CRIT\, Tin House\, and the Vermont Studio Center\, and her story The Rock Is Not a Rock was included as a distinguished story of 2024 in Best American Short Stories. She lives in Brooklyn. \nJiordan Castle is the author of Disappearing Act\, a memoir in verse. Her poetry and prose appear in The New Yorker\, The Millions\, HuffPost\, The Rumpus\, and elsewhere\, including the anthologies Best New Poets and What My Father and I Don’t Talk About. Originally from New York\, she has a BA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and an MFA in Poetry from Hunter College. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and their dog.

SUMMARY:Public Archaeology at Newlin Grist Mill
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! \nThe public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist\, Keith Doms\, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day\, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. \nExcavations this season are planned for the Trimble farm complex in the Historic Area. The Trimble family built their house on the property adjoining the Mill in 1739 and\, over time\, built a whole complex of structures to support the operations of their household and farm. By conducting archaeological studies in the area around the Trimble House\, the Newlin Grist Mill staff hopes to learn more about the people who lived and worked there in the 18th\, 19th\, and early 20th centuries. \nScheduled 2025 Public Archaeology Days:\nMarch 15\nApril 19\nMay 17\nJune 21\nJuly 19\nOctober 18 – International Archaeology Day \n10am-3pm. Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig\, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend.

SUMMARY:Beards on Ice
DESCRIPTION:Lace up your skates\, because Philadelphia’s most daring cabaret group is putting the ice in climate crisis! The Bearded Ladies are hitting a municipal ice rink near you with a remount of their internationally acclaimed ice-stravaganza Beards on Ice\, which asks the age-old question: What’s more impossible: Solving the climate crisis or teaching drag queens how to ice skate? \nDescribed by Fox News as “government waste” and by the Bearded Ladies’ Artistic Director John Jarboe as “a fracking good time\,” Beards on Ice comes in two dazzling varieties: Family Meltdown – A family-friendly afternoon romp for kids and kids-at-heart\, and Beards on Ice: Still Edging – A PG-13\, late night\, no-holds-barred cabaret with a bit more edge! The show also boasts performances at two different municipal rinks\, Taken Ice Rink in North Philadelphia (performances March 15-16) and Laura Sims Skate House in West Philadelphia (performances March 22-23). Whichever location you choose to attend\, audiences will enjoy a free skate rental and 1-hr long skating session after the performance (included in ticket donation)\, as well as hot chocolate and tabling from Philadelphia’s cutting-edge climate justice organizations\, including Physicians for Social Responsibility PA. \n”It feels so good to have some joy and absurdity brought into the climate change conversation\, while speaking to the seriousness of the issue\,” says Bearded Ladies Artistic Director John Jarboe. “At the end of the performance\, we want people to be more involved in the day-to-day climate justice work that’s happening in Philadelphia. It can be hard in a city landscape where everyone is dealing with a lot – how do you help people get rid of the armor they build throughout the day and listen? You show them a beautiful costume\, you sing them an amazing song\, you make them laugh while acknowledging the radical crisis that we’re in and the great opportunity we have as a species to come together.” \nJoin the Bearded Ladies in taking on the climate crisis\, one wobbly skate at a time!

SUMMARY:The Kahlo Quartet Celebrates Latin Heritage in Port Richmond
DESCRIPTION:Artcinia favorite\, The Kahlo Quartet\, is back! The Kahlo Quartet’s mission is to bridge the classical cannon with Latin American music. Join us as the string quartet plays pieces from Brazil\, Venezuela\, Panama\, and more! \nAudrey Lee\, violin \nManuela Isabel Romero Gonzalez\, violin \nFreddy Contreras\, viola \nAndrea Beltran Landers\, cello \nAbout Kahlo Quartet: \nThe Kahlo Quartet began its journey around a shared vision that everyone should have access to meaningful musical experiences\, and a shared mission to create a bridge between the typical classical canon and Latin American music. Now based in Philadelphia\, the Kahlo members work regularly with community partners in pursuit of these core values. For the Kahlo Quartet\, success is measured by audience connection and community impact. \nMembers Audrey Lee (United States)\, Manuela Romero (Cuba)\, Freddy Contreras (Venezuela)\, and Andrea Beltran Landers (Peru) are eager to explore the chamber music repertoire from their respective cultural backgrounds. Because storytelling through music is a living and changing art form\, the Kahlo String Quartet actively seeks collaborations with composers around the world
