SUMMARY:Book signing event with Nicole Glover
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Glover is a fantasy writer with whose Murder & Magic series spans generations of a family with magical powers. Her work blends historical fiction with cozy fantasy. Her novels The Conductors and The Undertakers take place in post Civil War Philadelphia where Hetty Rhodes and her husband Benjy were part of the Underground Railroad using magic to help free enslaved people. Now\, they are solving mysteries in the Black community that white authorities won’t touch. Her novel The Improvisers takes place during the Prohibition Era where one of Hetty Rhodes’ descendants—who is also a wielder of magic—is a pilot that discovers a dangerous artifact that is controlling people. \nGlover’s newest novel\, The Starseekers\, releases on January 6\, 2026. The story centers on another Rhodes family member\, Cynthia Rhodes\, a NASA arcane engineer in the mid-1900s who is brilliant at both math and magic. She becomes involved in an investigation of a mysterious theft at the arcane history museum which leads to surprising connections between deadly enchantments\, rumored pirate treasure\, a peculiar plant\, and a dire threat to the space program as well as everything she holds dear. \nGlover will be visiting Multiverse on Saturday\, January 17 from 1-3pm to sign copies of all four of her titles in the Magic and Murder series. Join us to get a copy and the chance to chat with the author about the fantasy world she creates.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Fake News and War of the Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Fake News and War of the Worlds\,” a look at an infamous Orson Welles broadcast as an early lesson on mass media’s dangers\, with Daniel H. Foster\, associate professor and chair of liberal arts at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute. \nOn the evening of October 30th\, 1938\, somewhere between 6 and 12 million Americans tuned in the radio version of New York City’s experimental Mercury Theater. It was a decision that some\, no doubt\, came to regret. What they heard was an all-male chorus of talking heads—scientists\, journalists\, politicians\, and military experts—repeatedly telling them that New Jersey was being invaded by Martians. \nThe ensuing hours were alarming ones for those who did not realize they were listening to Mercury Theater on the Air’s adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells science fiction novel War of the Worlds. The performance\, directed by and starring Orson Welles\, pushed the still young medium of radio drama further than many had pushed it before. Its masterful use of music\, sound effects\, and especially silence showed how radio could ignite the imagination and make listeners fear the worst. \nRevisit that classic moment in media history\, and learn what lessons it holds for us today\, with Professor Daniel Foster\, who over the years has taught the “War of the Worlds” broadcast as part of courses in radio\, theater\, and sound studies at several universities. \nHis talk will go beyond the trivia and urban legends surrounding the broadcast and focus on the broadcast itself\, to reveal what really happened and why it mattered. He’ll look at the broadcast not just as a moment of public panic\, but a daring work of art. \nAired during a period of rapid modern change\, marked by the rise of dictators in Europe to the recent fiery destruction of the Hindenburg\, the “War of the Worlds” broadcast tapped into widespread anxiety about new technologies and invading forces. Often labeled as an early case of “fake news\,” it exposed deep questions about the institutions listeners trusted: education\, the media\, government\, and the military. \nTo emphasize the mischief radio can bring to the world\, Orson Welles\, at the end of the broadcast and in person\, compared the radio to a jack-o-lantern and warned us to beware this “invader of the living room.” \nAnswering questions about the performance\, its historical context\, and radio as a medium—new\, blind\, and global— isn’t merely an academic exercise. It can help us better understand how fake news works today and how to detect such lies before they cause irreparable harm. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: A Henrique Alvim Corrêa illustration from a 1906 edition of War of the Worlds (Wikimedia Commons).

SUMMARY:2026 Saturday 'Visiter' Awards\, Call for Entries
DESCRIPTION:Call for entries for the 2026 Saturday ‘Visiter’ Awards opens January 19\, 2026\, Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday! Deadline for entry May 30\, 2026. Visit the awards website for more information and guidelines for entry: SaturdayVisiterAwards.org\nThe Saturday Visiter Awards are presented by Poe Baltimore to recognize a new generation of artists continuing Edgar Allan Poe’s legacy in the arts and literature around the world.  The prizes celebrate media\, art\, performance and writing that adapts or is inspired by Poe’s life and works.\nThough he was not wealthy in his lifetime\, Edgar Allan Poe was the first American writer to support himself entirely by his pen. The Saturday Visiter was the name—and spelling—of a local periodical that held a contest for poetry and short stories. Poe won the award for his short story “MS Found in a Bottle” (which he wrote at Poe House.) The Saturday Visiter Awards are named after the prize a young Edgar Allan Poe won while he lived in Baltimore which helped to launch the famed writer’s career.

SUMMARY:Historical Society of Pennsylvania Presents The Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1800s
DESCRIPTION:How has the makeup of who is an American changed since the American Revolution? How have the people in that changing face of America continuously reinvigorated and reasserted the founding ideals of the country? By examining the documents left by our ancestors in the time leading up to America’s 100th birthday\, this display will ask those questions of their descendants. This exhibit draws on collections at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It will be curated in partnership with ethnic and genealogical societies that seek to connect Americans to their ancestors through research\, programs\, and networking opportunities. \nBy the time of the nation’s Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876\, enormous waves of German and Irish immigrants had arrived in Pennsylvania\, and significant migrations of free and enslaved people of African descent had moved from the South\, using the Underground Railroad and following Emancipation during and after the Civil War. What do the records of their lives suggest about how they saw their roles as Americans and as newly arrived Pennsylvanians?

DESCRIPTION:Join The Print Center for a Gallery Talk and Opening Reception for three solo exhibitions awarded from the 100th ANNUAL International Competition: \n  \n“Glen Baldridge: The Pond” \n“Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter: Epilogues of the Black Madonna” \nand \n“Adi Sundoro: Seeking Into The Folds” \n  \n5:30pm – Gallery Talks \n6 – 7:30pm – Opening Reception \n  \nFree and open to the public. \n  \nThe exhibitions feature artists representing a wide geographic range\, from Philadelphia\, Maine and Indonesia. Glen Baldridge\, Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter and Adi Sundoro take widely different approaches to their subject matter\, each expressing a strong creative vision through a compelling exploration of materials. Baldridge’s night-vision photographs of a pond near Portland\, ME\, reveal psychedelic undercurrents; Baxter’s activist reinterpretations of 19th century daguerreotypes advocate for Black women and girls; and Sundoro explores the implications of security breaches by the Indonesian government through the reuse of printed food wrappings. \n  \nThe exhibitions will be on view January 23 – April 4\, 2026. \n

DESCRIPTION:A century of iconic Greek music comes to life in a global celebration of Hellenic culture. The Hellenic Music Ensemble\, a 21-piece orchestra under the musical direction of Panos Liaropoulos\, embarks on a landmark world tour celebrating the centenary of Greece’s legendary composers Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis. They are joined by special guest star\, the Tony and Grammy Award–nominated Broadway singer and actress Judy Kuhn\, creating a rare artistic bridge between the Greek and American musical worlds. Audiences will experience a sweeping journey through Theodorakis’ stirring anthems of resistance and Hadjidakis’ lyrical masterpieces of love and poetry. Visiting nine countries and performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages\, this international celebration introduces the beauty and soul of Greek music to audiences worldwide. SUMMARY:Variety Pack
DESCRIPTION:After its debut in 2025\, VARIETY PACK is back and leveling up. Philadelphia’s festival dedicated to the chaotic\, theatrical\, unclassifiable corners of alt-comedy returns January 22 – 31\, 2026 with two weekends of shows\, twenty acts\, and even more gloriously unhinged performances.\nWhat started as a one-time experiment has now officially become its own producing entity: Variety Pack\, an independent festival committed to giving Philly’s strangest comedic minds a home… \n7:00 PM\, My Favorite Broadway: The Lost Tapes\nBased on audience suggestions\, Chris Newcomer and Alanna Shaffer will perform classic songs from bygone musicals you’ve never heard of because they don’t actually exist. Along with Michael Raab as musical director come see this improvised confection made for people who wish there were even more classic musicals in the canon!\n8:30 PM\, R. Eric Thomas: What’s New With You? (An Hour of Gossip)\nSmall talk\, big secrets\, gossip\, unsolicited opinions\, lab work\, take home quizzes\, trust falls\, game show\, storytelling\, comedy\, under one hour. New material from R. Eric Thomas\, world’s oldest millennial.\n10:00 PM\, She Was a Conquistawhore\nLegend has it The Conquistawhore pounds whiskey and brawls her vagina\, on account he makes terrible decisions. The two wander the Wild West (or is that the Main Line?) weaving a story of manifest destiny – a calling to take the land back one cis-white man at a time. An absurdly radical exploration of intergenerational trauma and healing where even pussies can become cowboys. Come to laugh and/or cry – stay for the horses and live music.

SUMMARY:Philly Sketchfest Presents Bad Medicine and Public Domain
DESCRIPTION:Philly Sketchfest presents Bad Medicine (from Washington DC) and Public Domain (from Philly)! \nBad Medicine is a high energy sketch comedy troupe with a bent toward the dark\, cerebral\, and absurd. It’s the right amount of stupid fun. We’re a congress of friends from Washington DC producing and teaching sketch comedy at the historic DC Improv Comedy Club. Bad Medicine has performed at festivals like Sketchfest Seattle\, SF Sketchfest\, and Austin Sketchfest. They’re also co-founders of DC Sketchfest. \nPublic Domain is a Philly-based sketch team with a strong comedy background\, most of whom are veterans of Cutthroat Sketch. They had their debut show in February at the Yellow Bicycle Theater\, and show no signs of stopping\, with an amazing set at Philly Sketchfest 2025.   \nBuying a ticket for this show includes a free ticket to Theme Park: The Games at 9pm.  \nGrab a drink before (and after) at Quig’s next to Skinner Studio. \nPlease note that Skinner Studio is a third-floor walk-up in a historic building and unfortunately is not ADA-accessible.
