SUMMARY:Author Laurie Halse Anderson Visit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting event with Laurie Halse Anderson\, the award‑winning author of many amazing books for kids and teens! \nLaurie has stories that readers all over the world love—more than eight million copies of her books have been sold! Some of her books\, like Speak and Chains\, were even chosen as finalists for the National Book Award\, which is a really big honor for authors. \nUSA 250 \nIn 2026\, Americans are celebrating the 250th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence and the founding of our country. Laurie’s historical fiction novels Chains\, Forge\, Ashes and Rebellion\,1776 transport us back to that time and illustrate the lives of teenagers growing up during the American Revolutionary War. In these books\, you can follow enslaved 13-year-old Isabel Gardener and her 5-year-old sister Ruth\, enslaved 14-year-old soldier Curzon Smith\, and working-class teen Elsbeth Culpepper\, as they struggle to make the choices necessary to survive the war years. Follow them through Boston\, Rhode Island\, New York City\, Philadelphia\, Valley Forge\, Charleston\, and to the war ending Battle of Yorktown\, Virginia. These books show the issues real people of the time faced as they dealt with family separations and punishments inflicted on them because of slavery\, poverty\, war\, and disease. As the nation’s founders were declaring that all men are created equal\, with the right to life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness\, the books ask you to think about being in chains while hearing those lofty ideals. Would you join the army and fight for principles of equality and freedom knowing that they may not apply to you because of the color of your skin\, or gender? We will be discussing these and other questions as we use Laurie’s books to remember the everyday heroes of our early American history. \nAbout Laurie\nLaurie lives right here in Philadelphia—and she enjoys eating cheesesteaks while she writes her books! \nEvent Details\nThe event will be held in the Montgomery Auditorium on the Ground Floor of the Parkway Central Library.\nBooks will be available to buy if you’d like one signed! \nWe hope you’ll join us for an exciting conversation with Laurie Halse Anderson.

SUMMARY:SACCO & VANZETTI: A TRAGEDIA DELL' ARTE
DESCRIPTION:In 1919\, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti\, two Italian immigrants and anarchists\, were arrested on suspicion of robbing a shoe factory and murdering the paymaster and a guard. Their trial and subsequent executions sparked worldwide protests due to concerns about bias against the defendants based on their political beliefs and immigrant status. Through the lens of commedia dell’arte\, Sacco and Vanzetti: A Tragedia dell ’Arte\, will highlight the absurdity of the case while being a comic foil for the tragic events of Sacco and Vanzetti’s lives.

SUMMARY:Curtis New Music Ensemble: Portrait of Jessie Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:This performance is currently sold out. Join the waitlist to be notified when additional tickets become available. \nCurtis New Music Ensemble celebrates composer-in-residence Jessie Montgomery with a concert featuring works by the Grammy-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator. Praised as “turbulent\, wildly colorful\, and exploding with life” (Washington Post)\, Montgomery’s music fuses classical with vernacular styles\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness—offering a profound reflection of 21st-century American sound. \nA winner of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence\, Leonard Bernstein Award\, and Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year\, Montgomery explores themes from social justice to the Black diasporic experience with remarkable depth. The program opens with Concerto Grosso\, a bold reimagining of the baroque tradition where the solo violinist embraces “choose your own adventure” spontaneity. It concludes with Musings for two violins\, inspired by Bartók’s 44 Duos for Two Violins and honors composers like Bach\, Hindemith\, and Vivaldi. This captivating evening showcases Montgomery’s dynamic voice in modern classical music. \nPlease note programs and artists are subject to change. \nJessie Montgomery is a Grammy Award-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator whose work interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousnes\, making her an acute interpreter of 21st-century American sound and experience.

SUMMARY:Authors Tracey Levine & Grady Chambers in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Philly-based writers Tracey Levine (“At the Diner in Heaven”) and Grady Chambers (“Great Disasters”) for a reading & discussion. \nAbout the Event: \nJoin us on Tuesday\, April 7 at 7 PM where authors Tracey Levine and Grady Chambers will read from their work and discuss their craft. Tracey and Grady’s books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nRegistration on Eventbrite is highly recommended! Tickets are free or pay-what-you-want. \nQuestions? Email events@theheadandthehand.com. \nAbout the Books: \nAt The Diner in Heaven\, they’re serving up Bubbie’s chicken soup\, cigs\, abandoned malls\, roller skates\, Tastycakes\, 7-11s\, exes\, homemade bullets\, and the feeling of constantly being angled by boys\, some of them pretending to be men. Levine’s crisp\, intimate prose is—much like an Edward Hopper painting—saturated with loneliness and suggestion. These stories feel like sharing fries with a friend at midnight\, leaning in for the whispered secret that will change you both. – Annie Liontas\, Sex With a Brain Injury \n______________ \nIn the early 2000s in Chicago\, six young men start high school. Though they’ve been friends since boyhood\, their high school years set them on new paths: The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan begin\, along with the protests against them; Ryan falls in love but struggles to hold onto it; and he and the others learn to lose themselves in alcohol. With each passing year―as they enter college or the military\, then the world beyond; form new relationships with partners and children; and navigate shifting loyalties to a changing country―the narrator feels the group breaking further apart and finds himself asking: What does it mean to move forward\, both with and without one another? \nExploring the beauty\, hope\, and humor that can be found even in moments of deep loneliness and devastation\, Grady Chambers’ Great Disasters moves between memories of high school and early adulthood to consider friendship\, first love\, patriotism\, protest\, addiction\, and more. An exquisitely written\, profoundly moving debut novel\, Great Disasters is an intimate portrait of disasters big and small\, personal and political―and the ways the two are intertwined―and the announcement of a stunning new voice in American fiction. \nAbout the Authors: \nTracey Levine grew up in northeast Philadelphia and teaches creative writing and film courses at Arcadia University in Glenside\, PA where she coordinates the creative writing program for undergraduates. Her creative writing work has appeared in many journals such as Crack the Spine\, Streetlight Voices\, the anthology Broken Skyline\, she has a chapbook with The Head and The Hand Press\, and was included in Best Stories of Philadelphia from Toho publishing in 2021. She is the creator and former co-host of the Philadelphia reading series The Hatchery. She is also a dedicated yogi and yoga instructor who plays competitive darts. \nGrady Chambers is the author of the novel GREAT DISASTERS (Tin House\, 2025) and the poetry collection NORTH AMERICAN STADIUMS (Milkweed Books\, 2018)\, selected by Henri Cole as the winner of the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize. His poems and stories can be found in The Atlantic\, The Paris Review\, American Poetry Review\, Ploughshares\, Poetry Magazine\, The Sun\, Joyland\, Image\, The Kenyon Review\, and elsewhere. Grady is a former Wallace Stegner Fellow. He attended the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Syracuse University\, and lives in Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Philadelphia Beekeeping Before 1719
DESCRIPTION:Keeping bees (apiculture) was new to North America in the 1600s\, brought to the north-east by English and German colonists to produce honey and wax. The earliest record of apiculture in Pennsylvania explains how German settlers in Germantown kept honeybees\, cultivated honey and wax\, and celebrated bees with poems and stories. \nJoin historian Miranda Mote for a lecture that tells a story of beekeeping in Germantown before 1719. \nMiranda Mote\, PhD is a historian\, artist\, and educator based in Philadelphia and the 2023-24 Garden Club of America / Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize\, Landscape Architecture Fellow. She teaches history and design\, works with children in K-12 schools and public venues\, designs teaching games for children\, and is currently writing an arts focused literacy and botany curriculum of lessons designed especially for children that live in urban environments. She established Botanography in 2022 as a non-profit to directly serve students and families in Philadelphia County and believes that every school should have a garden classroom where students can connect with plants every day. \nThis program can be attended in the Skyline Room on Parkway Central’s Fourth Floor. No registration required. Join us earlier in the afternoon for a bee inspired children’s activity for children first grade and up. Learn more here.
