SUMMARY:Devan Shimoyama: SHIFT
DESCRIPTION:Glassboro\, NJ (January 6\, 2026) — Philadelphia native artist Devan Shimoyama will present new work in his regional debut\, SHIFT at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. This solo exhibition runs January 26 to March 21. Opening reception Wednesday February 4th 2026 at 5-7pm. \nDevan Shimoyama is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and self-portraiture\, with works inspired as much by classical mythology as by the culture of his youth. Through his depictions of the queer Black male form\, Shimoyama investigates the politics of queer culture while navigating his own personal narratives. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya\, he layers his surfaces with jewels\, black glitter\, rhinestones\, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black queer body. \nA Central High School alum\, who grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and Germantown\, Shimoyama graduated from Penn State University in 2011 with a BFA in Drawing/Painting. He received his MFA from Yale University School of Art in Painting/Printmaking in 2014. Shimoyama’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. He lives and works in Pittsburgh. \nRowan’s Art Gallery & Museum in Glassboro\, New Jersey\, just outside Philadelphia\, produces new contemporary art exhibitions by professional artists every two to three months. With a reputation for attracting respected international talent\, it’s a cornerstone of South Jersey’s vibrant arts scene. All exhibitions and special events are open to the public with free admission. \nNew Work\nSHIFT will feature the debut of Shimoyama’s most recent body of work\, which is inspired by the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. He stages scenes of transformation alluding to the dialogue between genuine and superficial change. The series reflects on our desire to present contained and perfect versions of ourselves\, while suggesting how forms of mysticism\, such as tarot reading\, can illuminate new pathways through turbulent times. \nThe show also includes four 18 x 22 swings\, embellished with silk flowers\, rhinestones\, jewelry\, canvas\, and found objects that hang on chains from the ceiling. The swings have only been shown twice previously. \nStudent Involvement\nShimoyama met with Rowan’s painting class to guide them in creating their own paintings based on his work. Their work will be exhibited in the gallery’s “Extension of the Classroom” hallway. He’ll meet with the class again when he is on campus in February. \nArtist Statement\n“My work seeks to examine and uplift the indomitable spirit of the queer Black male in today’s social climate. A certain reticence about gay male sexuality comes into question\, followed by an exploration of locating the queer Black male body’s role in society and even within the microcosm of gay male politics. Divination\, fairy tale\, folklore\, and mythology greatly influence the narrative element within my paintings as I build my own creation myth of the queer Black male. I use the language of classical mythology and contemporary stereotype to illuminate a small fraction of that identity. \nIn SHIFT\, the works feature a range of ways in which I think of transformation and shapeshifting\, particularly in its relation to one’s understanding of self. In the paintings\, I reimagine various Major Arcana tarot card compositions\, allowing my own impulses and symbols to intermingle with the preexisting canon of artists’\, illustrators’\, and practitioners’ imagery. Self-portraits donning the hairstyles of music icons reference both drag performers as well as my own lighthearted attempts during childhood to embrace my own queerness and femininity. \nLarge-scale portraits of iconic cinematic Black female vampiresses playfully celebrate the power and sensuality of transformation. I use fantasy and fiction to imagine ways to solve real problems and to discover new things about how we navigate the world.” \nHow to Visit\nLocated at 301 High Street West\, Glassboro\, NJ 08028\, Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is open to the public with free admission Monday to Friday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. \nAn Opening Reception on Wednesday\, February 4\, 5 to 7 p.m. features a discussion with the artist.

SUMMARY:Open Studio Night
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to go behind the scenes and explore the creative process of the next generation of emerging artists! \nOne of the most anticipated events on PAFA’s calendar\, Open Studio Night is the one time each year when PAFA students open their studios to the public to show and discuss their works in progress. \nThe event takes place on upper floors of the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building at 128 N. Broad Street—comprising of individual studios where PAFA students develop and refine their paintings\, sculpture\, prints\, animations\, and drawings. Open Studio Night gives visitors a rare look into the creative process of a new generation of emerging artists\, and a sense of how they develop their ideas. \nA special addition to this year’s event is tied to the exhibition Threaded Currents\, a collaboration between PAFA and the Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM)\, on view in PAFA’s School of Fine Arts Gallery and Tuttleman Sculpture Gallery from January 22nd – April 12th. Exhibiting artists will be doing printmaking demonstrations in PAFA’s Print Shop on the 6th floor – you don’t want to miss this hands on experience and opportunity to engage with these PAFA artists and former FWM apprentices! \nFeatured Image: Madison Greiner in her studio

SUMMARY:First Friday\, February 6th @ Arch Enemy Arts
DESCRIPTION:Arch Enemy Arts invites you to join us on Februray 6th from 5 – 9 pm for the opening celebration of four new solo exhibitions\, featuring new-contemporary artists working in a wild range of styles and mediums\, plus The 2026 Spotlight Showcase\, our only open call group exhibition of the year.  \nMore about the shows: \nBabs Webb’s “Same Window Different Visual” is a raw and emotive series. It is sweeping and intense; at once private\, personal\, delicate and dramatic. The show features five of the Colorado-based artist’s signature drawings\, plus three light-up dimensional works\, and a gorgeously constructed rare sculpture. As a whole\, the collection serves as a gateway into the artist’s dark and ethereal inner world. \nThe debut solo exhibition by local Philly artist\, Alex Eckman-Lawn\, is a collection of gorgeous dimensional collages made from hand-cut paper\, constructed in an architecture of mysterious portals\, like catacombs and ghostly terrains. \nAndrea Hooge’s “Futures Reimagined” is a series of twelve scratchboard illustrations\, sculptural dioramas\, and layered cutouts by Canadian artist Andrea Hooge. The series reflects on generational conflicts at different times in living memory in scenes that have all of the illustrative whimsy we love about Hooge’s work. \nSpanish pop-surrealist painter Perrilla debuts a romp of madcap monsters lead by powerful big-eyed females. Her work is weird and surreal\, yet full of joy. \nThe 2026 Spotlight Showcase is our annual pulse-check on the new contemporary landscape and an excuse to look beyond the familiar and find what’s next. This year’s lineup features 18 artists new to Arch Enemy Arts from across the globe\, working in a wide range of styles and mediums.

SUMMARY:InLiquid's By Simply Looking: Artist Reception and Gallery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join InLiquid on Wednesday\, February 11 from 6 to 8 PM for an evening reception celebrating By Simply Looking: The Art of Observation\, an exhibition that explores the beauty and humanity found in everyday moments. The event will feature a guided tour of each gallery beginning at the North Tower\, with insights from the participating artists\, and hors d’oeuvres provided by AVANA. \n  \nThrough traditional realism\, superrealism\, photorealism\, and hyperrealism\, the exhibition presents raw and intimate depictions of the mundane\, from Mary Henderson’s tender portraits inspired by motherhood to Jean Broden’s sunlit Philadelphia streetscapes. Works by Daniel Dalmann and Eric van der Vlugt highlight the intensity of figure and still life painting\, while Constance McBride’s clay sculptures explore themes of aging and gender. Animal inspired works by Emily Selvin and Darla Jackson complete the exhibition\, using form and symbolism to honor life and express human emotion.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Dark Side of Fairy-Tale Romance
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Dark Side of Fairy-Tale Romance\,” on the nightmarish elements of the tales we’ve repackaged as the stuff of lovers’ dreams\, with Linda Lee\, lecturer in folklore and fairy tales at the University of Pennsylvania. \nFrom romcoms to reality TV shows to wedding venues to Valentine’s Day\, we’re inundated with messages idealizing the idea of a “fairy-tale romance.” But the fairy tales underlying all the hype about charming princes\, grand balls\, true love’s kiss\, and the happily-ever-after actually can be profoundly unsettling and full of reasons to run like hell. \nGain an appreciation of how modern society glosses over the darker elements of fairy tales with Linda Lee\, who previously has given excellent Profs and Pints talks on witches and on Christmas folklore. \nShe’ll begin by discussing how much the idea of fairy-tale romance pervades mainstream media and popular culture\, giving her audience a brief tour of fairy-tale romance tropes across genres and in movies\, television\, advertising\, video games\, and elsewhere. \nIt’s understandable that people might swoon over canonical fairy tales’ fancy dresses\, crowded ballrooms\, expansive libraries\, and magical enchantments. But the romances at the core of the actual fairy tales often can be quite problematic\, and we’ll also look at those. \n“Cinderella\,” for example\, depicts women competing for male attention in ways that involve extreme measures like self-harm. Dead mothers\, abusive stepparents\, and family pressure to marry factor in as well. \nIn “Beauty and the Beast” a younger daughter is expected to sacrifice her future to rectify her father’s mistake. Other beastly elements of the tale: dubious consent\, arranged marriages\, anger management issues\, monstrous love interests\, isolation\, manipulation\, and possibly Stockholm syndrome. \nIn “Snow White” a young girl’s seemingly dead body is an object of desire\, and we’re told of pedophilia\, the threat of violence\, cannibalism\, necrophilia\, and consent violation. “Sleeping Beauty” features a prince who believes he’s entitled to sexual access to a sleeping princess\, as well as adultery\, cannibalism\, and abandonment. \nYou’ll come away with a deeper appreciation of the tales themselves and reason to roll your eyes at those who try to sell you on fairy-tale romance as an ideal. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: A Jennie Harbour illustration of “Sleeping Beauty” from My Book of Favourite Fairy Tales\, published in 1921. (Public domain.)
