SUMMARY:SPORTS!
DESCRIPTION:Two teams – LAVA and OBSIDIAN battle for ultimate SPORTS glory! Are our knees past their prime? YES. Are we good at SPORTS? YES AND NO AND ALSO KINDA. So why are we playing sports? Because now we’re ADULTS and there’s questions we can only answer in the SWEAT-POURING\, HEART-POUNDING HEAT OF COMPETITION that we sure as hell couldn’t answer in middle school gym class. \n  \nWe take the field to FIND OUT–what’s the line between HEALTHY and UNHEALTHY competition? What MYTHIC VERSIONS of ourselves are awakened in the whole-body pursuit of victory? \n  \nSo will YOU be there to root on your team and guide them to glory? HELL FREAKIN YEAH. \n  \nAnd listen–is your relationship with sports kinda complicated? OURS TOO. Some of us were going to be headed for the OLYMPICS but it SUCKED THE JOY OUT OF COMPETING. Some of us went to college to play volleyball and then tore our Achilles and found THEATER. Some of us avoided sports as much as we could because of TOXIC MASCULINITY. As queer people\, people with bodies past peak athletic performance\, and artists\, what belonging can we find as we collectively DUNK ON OUR DEMONS? \n  \nSO DON’T MISS this one-time-only professionally performed\, athletically amateur\, everything-on-the-line SPORTS EXTRAVAGANZA. \n  \nSPORTS! Schedule:\nTailgate 3:00-5pm FREE queer pre-show tailgate event and cornhole tournament hosted by partner OutLoud Sports.\nShow 5-7pm SPORTS! Performance\nMovie 7:30-9:30pm sports film screening hosted by cinéSPEAK\, free with your SPORTS! ticket or $5-10 walk-up for the screening only.

SUMMARY:Echoes of Renewal
DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PA: Original performance company Continuum Dance Project is making its Philadelphia debut with its newest dance/video work\, Echoes of Renewal\, at Performance Garage (1515 Brandywine St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19130)\, running for a limited engagement September 27th at 1 and 5 pm.  Echoes is a visually striking dance work that explores the essential connection between humanity and the natural world. It is touring as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Press is welcome to attend either performance on September 27th. \nFounder Fernadina Chan is excited to bring Echoes of Renewal to Philadelphia to share the work with new artistic communities and build relationships with Philadelphia-based artists and venues. “The themes of the work\, attention\, care\, and reciprocity feel especially relevant in today’s world. Our work encourages audiences to feel themselves as part of nature’s life cycles. In the face of increasing climate change\, we hope to bring people together so they feel connected to each other and the environment we all live in.” \nEchoes of Renewal is a visually striking dance work that explores the connection between humanity and the natural world. Created by Continuum Dance Project\, with video by Ernesto Galan\, the piece blends powerful\, expressive choreography with themes of attention\, care\, and reciprocity. Designed for 5 performers who are constantly connected\, Echoes brings the essence of the outdoors inside. The work invites viewers to feel\, not just observe\, our place within nature’s cycles. \nInspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ and a personal sense of disconnection\, the work challenges audiences to reconsider their relationship to the seasons\, and the land we inhabit. Intended for both indoor and outdoor stages\, Echoes of Renewal is adaptable\, evocative\, and timely; an experience that resonates long after the final movement.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: The Happiness Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “The Happiness Workshop\,” a look at what recent research and centuries of wisdom tell us about bringing more joy and contentment to our lives\, with Eric Zillmer\, professor of psychology and the director of the Happiness Lab at Drexel University. \nAre you happy? If not\, how do you get there? \nGain insights into happiness with Eric Zillmer\, an award-winning teacher who leads a creative think tank that investigates the ingredients for happiness among individual people and communities. He has graciously agreed to come back to the Fishtown’s Black Squirrel Club to deliver a talk on happiness that sold out and received rave reviews when he gave it last spring. \nYou’ll learn how the study of happiness is a growing\, evidence-based field known as positive psychology\, which aims to find solutions to happiness challenges that can bring positive change to our lives and environments. \nDr. Zillmer will discuss the meaning of happiness and its place in our lives and society. He’ll draw from recent science and great thinkers in discussing how we can increase our own happiness and well-being\, throwing out a few practical tips as well. \nHe’ll talk about whether happiness can be measured and where in our brain happiness is located. We’ll look at the influence of socializing and social media on our happiness and about the roles that music\, humor\, adversity\, and regret have in happiness research. \nDr. Zillmer will discuss what we learn about happiness from competitive sports\, and he’ll suggest ten actions that you can engage in that will make you happier. \nThe talk coincides with an immersive installation by Dr. Zillmer at The Study at University City at 20 S. 33rd Street until November 15th. Titled “The Philadelphia Happiness Map\,” it explores what makes people happy and the places in Philadelphia where they feel happiest. \nAmong the questions Dr. Zillmer will tackle in speaking at the Black Squirrel Club: What is the happiest day of the week? SUMMARY:The Filangieri-Franklin Correspondence: Foundational Dialogue Between Italy and America
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia are pleased to present an evening exploring one of the earliest intellectual connections between Italy and the United States. Beginning with a hybrid lecture by Professor Amedeo Arena\, Full Professor of European Union Law at the University of Naples Federico II\, the program will examine the enduring significance of the correspondence between Gaetano Filangieri and Benjamin Franklin and the Enlightenment ideals that helped shape modern conceptions of liberty\, government\, and the pursuit of happiness. Drawing on Professor Arena’s recent publication\, Cittadino di tutti i luoghi\, contemporaneo di tutte l’età: l’universalità del pensiero di Gaetano Filangieri\, the lecture will reflect on Filangieri’s influence 250 years after the Declaration of Independence. \nFollowing the lecture\, guests are invited to a reception marking both the opening of Italian Heritage Month and the debut of HSP’s exhibition\, Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1900s\, which explores the evolving communities and identities that have shaped the Commonwealth’s story. A temporary exhibit of original documents related to the Filangieri-Franklin correspondence will also be on view for this evening only.

The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2025-2028 (RRS)\, including the prescriptions of U.S. Sailing except as modified by the Sailing Instructions. \n  \nRacing boats will launch from the start line off Penn’s Landing for round-the-buoy racing\, navigating current\, fellow competitors\, and wind in the Delaware River. The first start is at 10:30 a.m.\, with the last race starting no later than 3:30 p.m. Racecourses will be set north of the Ben Franklin Bridge south to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay base\, only a little over a 1-mile long in distance\, so that spectators can catch some of the action all along the waterfront. The Awards Ceremony and waterfront afterparty follow. \n  \nReady to Race \n  \nDinghies and keelboats\, from 14′ Laser to 30′ J/30\, are ready to race. \n  \nOne of these is the 19′ Flying Scot\, named Flying Scot\, skippered by Riverton\, NJ’s Arthur Littleton. This isn’t Littleton’s first Philadelphia Cup Regatta. He sailed several years ago in a Sunfish. This year\, he and his crew are one of three Flying Scots representing the Riverton Yacht Club in this one-design. \n  \nIt is not often you get to race in front of Penn’s Landing with the Philadelphia skyline in full view. For me\, it has been 10-15 years. Supporting sailing events like this helps keep sailboat racing alive. A lot of effort goes into planning a regatta\, and Riverton Yacht Club is helping promote and support Liberty in making it a success\,” says Littleton. \n  \nThe historic Delaware and Tinicum\, 24-foot Corinthian Sloops\, designed by Philadelphia naval architect Thomas Bowes in 1951\, will be on the start line this year. The Delaware was rebuilt in 2018 and the Tinicum in 2023 at Independence Seaport Museum’s Seaport Boat Shop to help revive one-design Corinthian Sloop racing on the Delaware River. \n  \n“I’ve always seen the Philadelphia Cup as a great way to showcase the recreational sailing that is thriving on the Delaware River. Now that the event has returned to the Delaware\, it seems like a great opportunity to get two historic Philadelphia boats racing on the river again. The hope is to garner interest not only in this class of boat but in all boats\, both modern and traditional\, and to continue growing recreational sailing in Philadelphia. Crew for both boats is still being assembled. In the meantime\, we are freshening up paint and varnish on both boats and preparing the rigging for race day\,” says Dormond\, director of Boat Shop and Waterfront Operations. \n  \nOrganizers of The Philadelphia Cup Regatta thank Con Murphy’s Irish Pub\, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation\, SeaPhilly\, Mainstay\, Campari\, Penn’s Landing Marina Pier 3 and Pier 5\, and Live! Casino & Hotel for their sponsorship. \n  \nPast to Present \n  \nThe Philadelphia Cup Regatta was first hosted by Liberty Sailing Club\, Riverton Yacht Club\, and The Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia from 2011 to 2016 and returned in 2024. The Cup itself dates back over 40 years. \n  \nFor more information\, visit www.philadelphiacupregatta.com/ or contact the regatta director at info@philadelphiacupregatta.com.
